Punk Pedagogy: Teaching To Confront Intersecting Discourses Of Domination, David Jagusch

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Through the utilization of autoethnography and critical discourse analysis, this dissertation explores the applications of punk rock, its ethos and its philosophies, in the world of education. Effects Of A Service-Learning Experience On English Language Teacher Development, Evelyn C. West Jan 2020

Effects Of A Service-Learning Experience On English Language Teacher Development, Evelyn C. West

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This project examines how a service-learning project helped future English language (EL) teachers grow. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) students planned and implemented an afterschool program to support young English learners at Estabrook Elementary. Using Piaget's theory of constructivism, this hands-on, real-world learning opportunity allowed EMU students to construct their own understanding and reflect on the experience. TESOL students first developed an after school EL program and put into practice their own lessons. Then, through reflection journals and critical discussions, students used metacognitive strategies to strengthen their expertise. As the ‘students turned teachers’ reflected on their learning, …

Examining Students' Perspectives On The Use Of First Language In Community-Based English As Second Language Classrooms, Fernanda Da Silva Carvalho

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This survey-based research investigates the perspectives on first language (L1) use by adult students of English as a second language (ESL) in three ESL community-based programs in Michigan, United States. The study focuses on community-based programs because, even though it offers a variety of social, educational, and language backgrounds, this setting has been underrepresented in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) research on L1 inclusion in ESL classes. The key findings of this study demonstrate that students use their L1 regardless of their English proficiency and lack of encouragement by teachers. In addition, students believe specific L1 uses …

An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Black High School Students In The Mathematics Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Jennifer Banks Aug 2016

An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Black High School Students In The Mathematics Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Jennifer Banks

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

For the past 30 years, there has been a significant “achievement gap” between the mathematics academic performance of Black and White students. This “achievement gap,” has been used to validate deficit thinking frameworks and portray Black students as unmotivated and deviant. This study suggests that it is necessary to change the national conversation of the achievement gap to one that Milner (2012) refers to as the opportunity gap.

Using the stories of Black high school students’ experiences in the mathematics classroom, this dissertation displays the various opportunity gaps that Black students experience within the classroom. This study utilizes qualitative research …

Drawing on in-depth qualitative data from fifty-four surveys and five interviews, this study investigated the elements of motivation and demotivation reflected in Sri Lankan ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers.
