The overall increase in the number of students being retained in school at all levels of secondary education has resulted in a growing number of children of Aboriginal/part Aboriginal and/or migrant parents in the secondary streams. These children who previously tended to finish their schooling in the primary school are now entering secondary schools to complete their education.

Observations On The Language Acquisition Of A Thai/English Bilingual Child, Michael A. Betcher Jan 1979

Observations On The Language Acquisition Of A Thai/English Bilingual Child, Michael A. Betcher

MA TESOL Collection

A child subject, bilingual in Thai and English, was studied during his 25th months for aspects of transference* and interference in his developing speech. A speach diary was kept on a daily basis. Attention was focused on prosodic features (intonation/tonality), word borrowing and code switching. Examples of all these phenomena were recorded, but the most significant was that of prosodic interference, wherein English intonation indicating stress, excitement or urgency was carried over into the strictly regulated Thai intonation system. * A term which is used to avoid the negative implications of "interference" and to indicate the use of a syncretic …

The Role Of Language In The Assimilation Of Lebanese Immigrants In Australia., A. W. Ata

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Most research surveys in recent years have revealed that problems of language permeate every aspect of life of migrant communities. Migrants who have attained a reasonable command of English are likely to be better adjusted and therefore more easily accepted by the host society and less vulnerable to exploitation than are other members of their community; circumstances which obviously make for easier assimilation. A methodological study was set up to investigate degrees in acquiring the varying standards of knowledge of English among Lebanese migrants, attempts made to learn English after immigration, the language spoken at home, the insistence of parents …
