The Constitution Of Bilingual/Esl Education As A Disciplinary Practice: Genealogical Explorations, Jaime Grinberg, Elizabeth R. Saavedra Dec 2000

The Constitution Of Bilingual/Esl Education As A Disciplinary Practice: Genealogical Explorations, Jaime Grinberg, Elizabeth R. Saavedra

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

This article provides a cultural and political critique of the constitution of bilingual/English-as-a-second-language (ESL) education as a disciplinary practice in the case of New Mexico. Using genealogy and postcolonial, post-structural, and critical frameworks, this article claims that the directions advanced by the Chicano/Chicana movement were lost. Instead, what emerged was a field that nurtured a mix of symbolic colonization and docilization through the construction of a settlement that controls thought and behavior, perpetuating misrecognition in a Bourdieuian sense. Illusion, collusion, and delusion have enabled the dominance of psycholinguistic approaches. Problematizing the constitution of bilingual/ESL education within a cultural and political …

"If You Build Them Up, They Will Stay": The Role Of Recognition And Feedback On Student Retention, James R. Jones

Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

While such stratagems are certainly well founded, and have achieved varying degrees of success, it may be that a more fundamentally vital area of examination is being largely overlooked, namely the impact of the high school experience. One of the critical problems facing many institutions of higher learning is that of student retention. While this issue is an important one to address across the entire student population, it has become particularly acute as relates to "minority" pupils. Accordingly, many colleges and universities have developed strategies to try to arrest enrollment attrition. These strategies typically include such mechanisms as tracking programs, …

Implementing Fluency First Activities In An Intermediate-Level Eap Reading Class, Martha Iancu Jul 2000

Implementing Fluency First Activities In An Intermediate-Level Eap Reading Class, Martha Iancu

Faculty Publications - Department of World Languages, Sociology & Cultural Studies

The goal of the intermediate level in our postsecondary intensive English program at George Fox University—a small, liberal arts university in the United States—is to introduce academic language skills to students whose institutional Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores range from 400 to 450. After using an analytical, skills-based approach for a number of years, I felt dissatisfied with the students’ level of learning. Seeking a solution, I came across an on-line discussion1 of teachers who postulate that students cannot benefit fully from instruction in higher order skills unless they have first developed basic fluency. The first …

Flarr Pages #19: Developing Students' Understanding Of Latin Grammar Through Sentence-Structure Analysis Sheets, Daniel N. Erickson

FLARR Pages

Latin teachers well know that students are often overwhelmed when they are making the transition from English, a word-order dependent language, to Latin, which is not and thus is highly flexible. Sentence-Structure Analysis" ("SSA") is a technique of mine that has been used successfully to help students make the transition to Latin's word order and develop an understanding of its syntax. Let us begin by considering a basic principle underlying Sentence-Structure Analysis Sheets.

Kinsey Dialogue Series #2: Participatory Research And Action: Flower, Weed, Or Genetically Modified Monster?, Eileen Kane

Participatory Research & Practice

Over the last fifteen years I have been using participatory research in many areas, and especially to look at problems and opportunities for girls' education in developing countries. In this paper, I want to share some ideas about what I think needs to happen if participatory approaches are to grow and flourish in the future. The questions I am asking are, "what is participatory research? is it a sunflower, getting stronger as it pushes toward enlightenment? Is it kudzu, omnipresent and sometimes out of place? Is it a rootless creation, a carbuncle grafted on to the conventional trunk of research? …

Predictors Of College Adjustment And Success: Similarities And Differences Among Southeast-Asian Americans, Amy Strage

Faculty Publications

The role of students' family backgrounds and rapport with instructors and peers as predictors of five indices of the adjustment and success were examined, for a cohort of 150 Southeast-Asian-American, Hispanic and White college students. Ethnic differences emerged for nearly all predictor and outcome measures. Discussion of these patterns includes consideration of the origins of a learned-helpless profile characteristic of many of the Asian-American students and of a mastery orientation characteristic of many of the Hispanic and White students.

Diversity In The College Curriculum : Overview Of The Literature, Ruben J. Carrion Jan 2000

Diversity In The College Curriculum : Overview Of The Literature, Ruben J. Carrion

Graduate Research Papers

The colleges and universities in the United States that have adopted a proactive commitment to diversity in the curriculum have done so because they understand how their central mission is linked with the future of a diverse society. They are aware that, in the new millennium, most new jobs in the economy require a postsecondary education, and women and racial/ethnic minorities compose a majority of the workforce. One result of this awareness is the transformation taking place at many institutions that links diversity in the curriculum with the development of new teaching practices and learning practices.
