Treading Water: Faculty Of Color Teaching Multicultural Classes During The Pandemic, Quinita Ogletree, Ana Carolina Diaz Beltran

Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice

There has never been a time like this in recent history. In the last year, educators have been building new paradigms as they teach. In this article, we inquire into our experiences teaching race at a PWI during the historic times of protests against the killings of Black men and women at the hands of the police and others, COVID-19, an election year, natural disasters, and changes in the Supreme Court. This article will reflect on the strategies and pedagogies used to support Faculty of Color teaching multicultural education/diversity classes at PWIs, and how the authors handled cultural taxation caused …

Privileging “Race” At Centers And Institutes In Higher Education: A Study Of The Landscape, Jonathan Lightfoot Nov 2021

Privileging “Race” At Centers And Institutes In Higher Education: A Study Of The Landscape, Jonathan Lightfoot

Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice

After identifying a number of academic centers with "Race" in their names at American colleges and universities in the United States, we sought to explore the efficacy and impact these centers have on their respective campus communities and beyond. The goal of this qualitative exploratory research was to better understand the nature of these race-oriented academic centers and the relationship they have with their host institutions. From a combination of website review, oral interview and online survey data, the study found that these American race-based academic centers and institutes contribute to our overall knowledge in several ways, including how they …

Pragmatic Humanism In Csd Diversity Education: A Conceptual Framework To Engage Students Across The Political And Cultural Spectrum, Tobias A. Kroll, Ana Honnacker, Christopher Townsend Oct 2021

Pragmatic Humanism In Csd Diversity Education: A Conceptual Framework To Engage Students Across The Political And Cultural Spectrum, Tobias A. Kroll, Ana Honnacker, Christopher Townsend

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The purpose of this reflection on scholarly teaching is to outline the difficulties arising when critical race theory, in its misappropriated and popularized form that dominates current discourse, is deployed as the sole educational framework in CSD education. We wish to offer an alternative framework, pragmatic humanism. The latter is expounded as a paradigm that can reap the benefits of critical race theory without succumbing to the absolutist claims of its popularized variant. It will be argued that pragmatic humanism is a useful framework for diversity teachers in CSD who are faced with an overwhelmingly White, conservative student body that …

(Re)Considering Craft And Centralizing Cultures: A Revision Of The Introductory Creative Writing Workshop, Zoë Bossiere, Micah Mccrary

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

This article explores options for introductory creative writing curricula that allow for and encourage a greater consideration of personal identity and audience on the part of the student-author. It reaches toward possibilities for revising the introductory creative writing course as a space for student-authors to not only consider the cultural positions of the professional authors they study, but also the ways in which their own subject-positions influence their writing practices, craft choices, and understandings of genre. The article overall proposes a holistic revision to the standard, introductory creative writing curriculum, moving student-authors beyond considerations of “good” creative writing, and toward …

The Trauma-Informed Equity-Minded Asset-Based Model (Team): The Six R’S For Social Justice-Oriented Educators, Srividya Ramasubramanian, Emily Riewestahl, Shelby Landmark

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This paper describes the Trauma-informed Equity-minded Asset-based Model (TEAM) framework for social justice-oriented educators. We draw on trauma-informed approaches to illustrate how systemic racism as systemic trauma and normative whiteness as dominant ideology are embedded in the U.S education and media institutions. From an equity-minded perspective, we critique notions such as egalitarianism, colorblind racism, neoliberal multiculturalism, and abstract liberalism. Using an asset-based model, we urge educators to avoid deficit ideologies to frame marginalized communities. The TEAM approach offers the following “Six R’s” as strategies: (1) Realizing that dominant ideologies are embedded in educational systems, (2) Recognizing the long-term effects of …

Hard Work Through Heart Work: Life Lessons Learned Through My Lens Of Microaggressions, Sean E. Harness May 2021

Hard Work Through Heart Work: Life Lessons Learned Through My Lens Of Microaggressions, Sean E. Harness

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

According to a study by Johnson-Ahorlu’s (2013), African American students experienced racial stereotypes, which were presented to them as attacks on their academic capabilities. Many of the “attacks” included shock from faculty and peers when they achieved in the classroom and inquiries about their abilities to handle the course workload. I began my life as one of the statistics we read about. More specifically, the “poor Black kid” in inner-city Detroit Michigan who aspired to live a much better life. Although I grew up with very limited financial resources, my support system taught me to remain confident in the face …

On Calling In And Becoming: Our Microaggression Story, Ashley N. Gibson, Brooke Blevins

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

This paper is a joint account of an experience with a microaggression between a doctoral candidate, Ashley, and her doctoral advisor Dr. Blevins in Baylor’s EdD Learning and Organizational Change program ( EdD LOC). The microaggression took place in a virtual learning setting during the COVID-19 pandemic. This story recounts the moment of the offense, how the harm was repaired, and what each felt and learned from the exchange. Ashley and Dr. Blevins partnered to share their perspectives, and both authors hope this paper will shed light on the topic of microaggressions, by raising awareness, cultivating dialogue on the topics …
