The Underrepresentation Of Black Females In Cybersecurity, Makendra Latrice Crosby
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
The significance of cybersecurity methods, strategies, and programs in protecting computers and electronic devices is crucial throughout the technological infrastructure. Despite the considerable growth in the cybersecurity field and its expansive workforce, there exists a notable underrepresentation, specifically among Black/African American females. This study examines the barriers hindering the inclusion of Black women in the cybersecurity workforce such as socioeconomic factors, limited educational access, biases, and workplace culture. The urgency of addressing these challenges calls for solutions such as education programs, mentorship initiatives, creating inclusive workplace environments, and promoting advocacy and increased awareness within the cybersecurity field. Additionally, this paper …

Teaching Practices On More-Than-Human Perspectives In Hci Education – Current State And Future Paths, Eva Eriksson, Elisabet M. Nilsson, Tilde Bekker, Daisy Yoo
Learn X Design Conference Series
In times of climate emergency and artificial intelligence affecting everything in life, we must reconsider the way we teach our students how to become responsible designers of future technologies. In recent years we have seen a rise in interest in more-than-human perspectives in human-computer interaction (HCI), where more-than-human things, species, and designers move the field beyond traditional human-centred approaches. In this paper, we set out to explore how this new approach is taught, what we can learn from it, and what challenges remain. The contribution of this paper is an overview of a selection of more-than-human teaching practices and curriculum …

Putting The Fun In Foreign Language: Defining Leisure Language Learning And The Implications For Foreign Language Educators, Graca Webster
Scholars Day Conference
Leisure language learning is the pursuit of learning a foreign language out of one's own volition, rather than out of necessity, to fulfill an educational requirement, or for a job requirement, and for the primary purpose of pleasure and self-fulfillment. Leisure language learning can inform the way that foreign language educators prepare students for individual and personal success in a foreign language beyond the classroom. This work seeks to provide a complete definition of leisure language learning, discuss applications of this concept in the university level foreign language classroom, and present a layperson’s guide to becoming a leisure language learner.

"Laziness" And How It Affects Our Students, Wren Jenkins
"Laziness" And How It Affects Our Students, Wren Jenkins
ATU Research Symposium
This article analyzes the use of the term “lazy” in the educational setting, how this term affects students, and the pedagogical approaches educators can take within their subject areas to reduce stress for their students. Pedagogical decisions affect student stress, and this article provides suggestions to prevent student burnout in order to improve curricula offerings in secondary and higher-level classrooms. Results show that students often reduced to “lazy” are most likely struggling with an underlying cause for their lack of performance, such as stress, burnout, depression, anxiety-induced procrastination, unknown and undiagnosed mental challenges, and misguided apathy. Results concluded that to …

Digital Game-Based Approach To Math Learning For Students, Gul Ayaz, Katherine Smith
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
Mathematics is an important subject that is pervasive across many disciplines. It is also a subject that has proven to be challenging to both teach and learn. Students face many challenges with learning math such as a lack of motivation and anxiety. To address these challenges, game-based learning has become a popular approach to stimulate students and create a more positive classroom environment. It can serve as an alternative or supplement to traditional teaching and can better engage students while developing a positive attitude toward learning. The use of games in a classroom can create a more exciting and engaging …

CLASP Lecture Series
This panel explores how the lover’s leap narrative and its representation of Native American figures has been used to forge distinctive visions of public memory both in and beyond Winona, Minnesota. For most, details of the lover’s leap are reduced to Wenonah’s fatal action, specifically how she protested her family’s rigid customs of arranged marriage by jumping to her death from a bluff atop the Mississippi River. The goal of this panel is to offer a fuller account of the purposes this story has served in popular memory and the implications of its persistence for different audiences, past and present. …
