Translating With The Arts: Seeing Ourselves In The Classroom, Gina Padilla Muriera Apr 2022

Translating With The Arts: Seeing Ourselves In The Classroom, Gina Padilla Muriera

Assignment Prompts

This interactive lecture was designed to be presented weekly on the second meeting pattern day for 3 weeks, so as to transfer and apply various arts discipline strategies taught on the first meeting pattern day. One CA 177 CLO is to design co-equal instructional goals, assessments, and activities that evaluate K-8 student learning through both standards-based artistic processes and non-arts standards. With this objective, I model an arts as emancipatory education framework that empowers students to reflect on personal experiences where injustices were made in their own K-12 grade school journey, and to communicate these injustices through verbal monologue, creative …

Photography is a tool that can help us to “SEE.” What does this mean? If we are not visually impaired, we can, of course, physically see. But how much do we miss seeing? How much do we take for granted unless we take the time to look? With assignments that hope to inspire careful observation, we can use the camera to observe things in our familiar surroundings in quite extraordinary ways. Photography can help us become more observant and help us have a fulfilling visual life. During …

Trauma-Informed Performance Art Education, Yvonne Houy, Kymberly Mellen, Alethea Inns, Morgan Iommi

Creative Collaborations

Trauma is the emotional response to a disturbing event or series of events, and can cause symptoms such as unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, headaches, and nausea, according to the American Psychological Association (2022). Learning activities in the performing arts - such as adjusting the body through touch, or the emotional content of scenes - can retraumatize students unintentionally. In contrast, creating the conditions for emotional states that enhance learning is a science, and an art, that can support conditions for optimal performance including Flow states

Performing arts educators can proactively support students and performances by becoming trauma-informed and actively using intimacy …

Methods In Practice: Grounded Theory In Media Arts Education Research, Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson Dec 2020

Methods In Practice: Grounded Theory In Media Arts Education Research, Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning Infographics

Grounded theory qualitative research is a powerful method of practice, particularly for researchers aiming to explore complex processes through the perspectives and experiences of others. Grounded theory is also a powerful method of practice for researchers seeking to deepen a field of study in which the literature is thin and few theories exist. However, grounded theory is an often-overlooked research method, perhaps due to its inherent messiness. The purpose of this article is to demystify grounded theory practices by walking the reader through a grounded theory study conducted by the author in the field of media arts education. The study’s …

Framing Questions And Modes Of Inquiry In Illustration Process And Critique, Robert Brinkerhoff Apr 2019

Framing Questions And Modes Of Inquiry In Illustration Process And Critique, Robert Brinkerhoff

Faculty & Librarian Work

Every creative act begins with a question—whether consciously or unconsciously formed—and illustrators may enhance their approaches to visual problems by framing a line of critical inquiry that invigorates conceptualization. While inventories and lists of questions are suitable ways to begin, there exist many different modes of questioning—verbal and non-verbal, manual and cognitive, linear and discursive, intuitive and rational, integrative and deconstructive. This chapter explores diverse methods for inquiry in problem definition and resolution, describing a variety of models and incorporating observations by professional artist-educators to expose different strategies for illustrators.

Journey To Refuge: Understanding Refugees, Exploring Trauma, And Best Practices For Newcomers And Schools, Trina D. Harlow

NPP eBooks

Pre-K through 12th grade schools within the United States have become much more diverse in recent years. Schools are now commonly not only diverse because of diverse students born in the United States, but also have many immigrant students. A growing number of these immigrant students are resettled children who have refugee status. In schools, these recent immigrants are called newcomers. This book is a culmination of research and anecdotal experiences regarding the refugee issue as it pertains to these students in American schools and schools elsewhere in the world. Scholars, policy makers, educators, those who work in the refugee …

Exploring Public Space: Interventionist Artworks And The Creative Disruption Of The Everyday, Jack Watson Jan 2019

Exploring Public Space: Interventionist Artworks And The Creative Disruption Of The Everyday, Jack Watson

High School Resources

  1. Attempting to bridge a gap between artist and spectator while also challenging the elitism and preciousness associated with art, artists have long sought ways to blend the art experience into the everyday. From the ephemeral performances and “social sculptures” of 20th century conceptual art to the culture-jamming interventions of contemporary street art, there is a rich historical context for engaging directly with the spectator in public spaces. Taking artwork into public spaces in the form of actions rather than objects – actions which involve the participation of the spectator – bypasses the negotiations and mediations that take place when a …

Her and Kue are emerging Hmong-American artists whose work addresses the complexities of being second-generation women members of this nationless ethnic minority. In their artwork they navigate the politics of displacement, the connections between cultural identity and place, the impact of gendered social roles, and the weight of tradition from this unique perspective. Curated by Kate Mothes, founder of Young Space.

Reasserting Arts Education In K-12 Curriculum: A Qualitative Case Study And Pilot Programs, Amber Geary Feb 2018

Reasserting Arts Education In K-12 Curriculum: A Qualitative Case Study And Pilot Programs, Amber Geary

Books

From September 2015 through September 2017, the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College conducted a cross-sectional study that asked, “What makes K-12 public school educators choose to use a museum as part of their curriculum?” At the time of this research, no qualitative studies—either regional or national—could be found on this subject. Studies addressing the “how” and the “what” involved in museum-school collaborations had been published, but none looked at the “why” that motivated such partnerships.

This mixed-method, regional study reflects perspectives of teachers and administrators on the museum-school collaboration dynamic after the introduction of the …

Center For Social Equity + Inclusion Action Plan, Center For Social Equity & Inclusion, Rosanne Somerson, Rene Watkins Payne

Center for Social Equity & Inclusion Action Plan

Art and design have far-reaching capacities for generating shared language and connecting people and communities. The creative forms we study at RISD are powerful means for conveying ideas and shaping experiences across habituated boundaries. Today we see those forms resonate more than ever before in the multilingual, culturally heterogeneous, digitally interconnected spaces around the globe. In fact, the democratization of communications media has made it possible for long marginalized voices to join and substantively transform our public discourses. The resulting body of critical knowledge has focused attention on interlocking systems of privilege and disenfranchisement entrenched throughout our social institutions, including …

We occupy this space as a display of discontent, disobedience, and radical self care in an institution that demands constant physical production.
