English Teachers' Opinions On Challenges Face In Teaching English As Foreign Language: The Case Of Jalalabad Selected Secondary Schools, Fahim Rahimi, Hangama Samadi

Journal of Research Initiatives

One important goal of teaching is to achieve learning outcomes. It has been observed in universities that many students have different levels of English language proficiency. However, they study in the same English courses at the school level. The main objective of this study is to learn the challenges that exist in teaching the English language as a foreign language in secondary schools that affect the English proficiency of students. In addition, ways in which these challenges will be overcome is reviewed. The data collection tools were questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to collect data from English language teachers in selected …

Nurse Practitioners' Experiences With Role Transition: Supporting The Learning Curve Through Preceptorship, Viktoriya Y. Pleshkan Jan 2018

Nurse Practitioners' Experiences With Role Transition: Supporting The Learning Curve Through Preceptorship, Viktoriya Y. Pleshkan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The nurse practitioner (NP) role transition is difficult and ill-supported before and after graduation. Although preceptorships are essential in supporting a NP's role transition, there is a paucity of data on student and novice NPs' experiences with their role transition and how it is supported through preceptorships. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand and describe the meaning of NPs' role transition experiences while in a preceptorship before and after graduation. Schlossberg's transition theory and the cognitive apprenticeship models were used to guide the exploration of concepts of role transition and preceptorship. One face-to-face, 3 Skype, and …

Extended Learning Time, Ivette M. Febo May 2016

Extended Learning Time, Ivette M. Febo

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

Research suggests that regular participation in programs that provide academic and social activities contribute positively to children’s academic and social development (National Education Association, 2004). However, existing literature on teachers’ and parents’ views on extended learning time is limited. A lot of emphasis has been placed on after-school programs for three primary reasons. First, attendance in after-school programs can provide children with supervision during a time when many might be exposed to and engage in more anti-social and destructive behaviors. Second, after-school programs can provide enriching experiences that broaden children’s perspectives and improve their socialization. Third, after-school programs may …

Synergetic Learning Model: The Sum Is Greater, Kevin Thompson Jan 2016

Synergetic Learning Model: The Sum Is Greater, Kevin Thompson

Adult Education Research Conference

Scholars study a variety of factors that improve adult education outcomes. Academic research is typically focused on a single factor. There is a lack of guidance on combining research findings to create synergy. The opportunity exists to create a synergetic learning model that combines the work of many scholars.

From Objects To Subjects: Voices, Perspectives, Histories, And Learning In The South Asian American Experience, Edith Gnanadass, Ian Baptiste Jun 2011

From Objects To Subjects: Voices, Perspectives, Histories, And Learning In The South Asian American Experience, Edith Gnanadass, Ian Baptiste

Adult Education Research Conference

Using a postcolonial lens, this paper critiques scholarly discourse on the experiences of South Asian Americans (SAAs) in the United States as being too othering and too homogenized. In most of that discourse, SAAs are treated as objects who may only be reactive to dominant society and culture; their racialized experiences are also muted. Treating SAAs as subjects, this paper presents a way to enrich their experiences, paying particular attention to how those experiences have been racialized. Drawing upon, but also critiquing cultural historical activity theory, the paper presents an alternative way to think about and empirically examine learning.

Participatory Action Research And Anti-Poverty Community Organizing: Methodological Considerations And Preliminary Findings, Ashleigh Dalton, Israt Ahmed, Joseph E. Sawan

The Anti-Poverty Community Organizing and Learning project is working toward building and integrating city-wide anti-poverty efforts. This paper examines the use of a Participatory Action Research framework for undertaking a quantitative survey and qualitative case study. It presents and analyzes the role of community/university collaboration, the nature of participation, and the outcomes in terms of actions and learning. Through the findings and reflections emerging from this project, the paper discusses key questions about participatory approaches in the studies of community organizing and implications to adult learning and education practices.

Exploring The Teaching Mind: Extending Participation In Lifelong Learning Through Engagement With A Supportive Community, Jeremy Szteiter Apr 2009

Exploring The Teaching Mind: Extending Participation In Lifelong Learning Through Engagement With A Supportive Community, Jeremy Szteiter

Jeremy Szteiter

This paper extends the notion of lifelong learning beyond gaining knowledge over a lifetime to preparing oneself to teach what has been learned to others. The "Teaching Mind," as I define the idea, involves thinking about what has been learned and what one knows by reconsidering that knowledge through the eyes of self as a teacher. The Teaching Mind assumes a broad notion of teaching that relates to informal and community learning across all areas of life and culture, beyond professional teaching in formal schools. The pursuit of the Teaching Mind is highly accessible to all those who wish to …

Location, Relocation, Dislocation Learning Cultures Or Cultures Of Learning?, Paul Armstrong

Adult Education Research Conference

Following a recent organizational relocation, the impact on the teaching and learning became evident. In analyzing the impact of change, the most useful way of understanding the change was to utilize the postmodern concepts of location and (dis)location, and to consider using anthropological research techniques to identify cultures of learning.

Thoughts And Feelings Of A Beginning Tertiary Group Of Adult Learners In A Human Resource Development Course, Bryan W. Smith

The purposes of the study were to identify some characteristics of the four participants’ covert behaviour during their learning in a course on Human Resource Development (1-IRD), to gain some insight into the conception of self-performance held by the participants and the attributions of this self-performance, to examine the approaches to learning held by each participant, and to contribute to closing the gap between adult education and educational psychology. Three consecutive three-hour …

Transfer Of Learning Between Related And Less Related Tasks Using Content Specific And Content General Learning Strategies, Ronald W. Collins Feb 1990

Transfer Of Learning Between Related And Less Related Tasks Using Content Specific And Content General Learning Strategies, Ronald W. Collins

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study compared learning strategies in an effort to determine which strategy would be most beneficial to transfer of learning. A number of approaches were suggested in the related literature for maximizing learning, one of which was to use "learning how to learn," also known by the term content general learning strategy. This study hypothesized that the use of content general learning strategies would produce more transfer of learning across both related and less related tasks than content specific learning strategies. Both learning strategies were combined with either a visual and semantic method of encoding or a semantic only method …
