Abstract
This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of senior-level Black women student affairs administrators at four-year degree granting institutions. Moreover, this study documents Black women in nonfaculty administrative roles in student affairs at both predominately White institutions (PWIs) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). A multiple case study research design was used to investigate this phenomenon. Two frameworks were used to ground the study: Black feminist thought and representational bureaucracy. In the African American community, the Black Church and its clergy have served as gatekeepers to formal mental health treatment. Little is known about the beliefs of African American Christian senior pastors about mental health treatment and their personal views influencing their counsel to congregants seeking support through the church. This transcendental phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of African American Christian senior pastors in relation to how they understand mental health treatment and provide it to their congregants. African Americans account for a disproportionate percentage of students who pursue college education in comparison to European Americans. Indeed, a considerable number of African American High School Equivalency (HSE) students are not enrolling in college once they earn their HSE diploma. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine 3 African American HSE students' perceptions about factors that influenced their pursuit of higher education at the selected HSE study site. This study examines the educational persistence of women of African descent (WOAD) in pursuit of a doctorate degree at universities in the southeastern United States. WOAD are women of African ancestry born outside the African continent. These women are heirs to an inner dogged determination and spirit to survive despite all odds (Pulliam, 2003, p. 337).This study used Ellis’s (1997) Three Stages for Graduate Student Development as the conceptual framework to examine the persistent strategies used by these women to persist to the completion of their studies.

African American women are significantly underrepresented in engineering workplace organizations. However, the primary focus, in the field, is on the STEM pipeline in K-12 and undergraduate education. If the engineering community does not address contributing factors in workplace organizations, then the overall goal of increasing the underrepresented populations in the engineering field will not be met. As a result, this study examines the career experiences of African American female engineers to understand the challenges, which impact their development. Implications for research and practice are given to support this population and other underrepresented groups in STEM.

Literature on critical thinking discussing the experiences of African American students is limited. This study examined the experiences of African American undergraduate business students, as they became stronger critical thinkers. The study concludes by suggesting educators in higher education settings embrace the cultural diversity of the students in their classroom to inform culturally relevant course content development.
