Airport Electrification: Funding, Microgrids, And Sustainability, Irene A. Miller, Amy Rutledge
Airport Electrification: Funding, Microgrids, And Sustainability, Irene A. Miller, Amy Rutledge
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
The demand for air travel is increasing, and although the aviation industry only accounts for 2% to 3% of global emissions, it is a challenging industry to decarbonize (Ritchie, 2023). To assist with decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, US airports are transitioning to electric vehicles and electricpowered ground support equipment to reduce the environmental impact on the communities they serve. The Federal Aviation Administration provides grant incentives for airports to purchase zero-emissions vehicles, with the intention to reduce pollution in the communities they serve. Currently, many airports do not have the power generation capability or electrical infrastructure required to support the …

An Assessment Of "Long-Thin" Airline Routes: Network Structure And Emissions Implications For Environmental Policy, Porter Burns
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this research was to define, map, and quantify the network and environmental implications of “long-thin” routes (LTRs) – a route structure that has been discussed in the aviation industry but not formally studied in literature. LTRs were defined through the use of global OAG scheduling data from 1998 to 2018 to identify trends in air traffic growth and network dynamics. Flights were separated into seven aircraft class sizes (e.g., 75–150 seats, 150–225 seats) to measure LTRs at multiple scales. Routes were considered “long” if the stage length was at or above the 75th percentile in each …

Aim/purpose – Multiple factors affect a passenger’s origin and destination airport choice. This study explores some of the leading indicators associated with performance in cities with more than one airport. Two important Multi-Airport Systems (MAS) in Brazil were the object of this study: São Paulo (Congonhas and Guarulhos) and Rio de Janeiro (Santos Dumont and Galeão), the most significant demand-generating centers in the country and the most critical distribution centers of flights from South America.
Design/methodology/approach – Using public databases presenting the evolution of supply and demand from 2013 to 2018, the evolution of flights, and the sales by airlines …
