The Cost Of Subway Delays: A Counterfactual Welfare Analysis Of Boston’S T, Adam Dean
Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs
Boston’s subway system, the T, is an important artery for transportation in and around the city. However, it is the oldest subway system in the United States, and, as a result, is in dire need of upgrades. This paper employs a welfare analysis to calculate the economic cost of the T’s lack of reliability, while also comparing the T’s reliability rate to other transit systems around the world. With a counterfactual estimate of a 95 percent reliability rate versus the pre-pandemic 88.47 percent reliability rate, the difference in welfare is found to be between $54 million and $163 million annually. …

The Economic Impact Of Paradise Cove Aquatic Center In Richmond, Kentucky, Lauren Kilburn, Michael Bradley, James Maples
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
One of the most effective ways for rural communities to improve the local economy is by exploring opportunities related to tourism. When communities focus their resources on expanding and improving the tourism industry, it leads to additional opportunities for these communities to increase their revenue, provide jobs and revitalize the local economy. Like many other agencies, the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department has gradually expanded the tourism industry within the City of Richmond in Madison County, Kentucky. To help continue the expansion of this industry, Paradise Cove Aquatic Center opened in 2008. This decision was made because waterparks were becoming …

Stopover Destination Loyalty: The Influence Of Perceived Ambience And Sensation Seeking Tendency, Di Wang, Filareti Kotsi, Steven Pike, Jun Yao
All Works
This paper examines the influence of sensation seeking and perceived ambience on attitudinal loyalty towards two traditional stopover destinations (Singapore, Hong Kong) and two emerging stopover destinations (Dubai, Abu Dhabi). A quasi-experimental design with two separate samples of participants shows that travelers’ perceived positive ambience and attitudinal destination loyalty was higher for the traditional stopover destinations than for the emerging destinations. In addition, sensation seeking tendency moderates the effect such that travelers with lower sensation seeking tendencies have higher attitudinal loyalty towards the traditional stopover destinations while the effect is mitigated for those with higher sensation seeking tendencies. This paper …

This study investigates the interaction effect between previous stopover visitation and assessment orientation on destination loyalty. Using a quasi-experiment, benefiting from a sample of 200 travelers with a self-reported stopover experience in Dubai, it is found that travelers high in assessment orientation are more loyal to the destination. The effect of previous visitation on destination loyalty is enhanced for high assessors. This research is the first to apply regulatory mode theory to the stopover destination context in the destination marketing literature. From a practical perspective, destination marketers should segment potential visitors using assessment orientation and target on high assessors who …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
This paper explores the state and perception of wheelchair users in China. My research outlines various disability models by which we can measure China’s level of effectiveness at providing access and services for its disabled population. In my analysis, I largely draw the conclusion that China is evolving out of a Charity state model into one which supports the rights of Chinese citizenry. There are many good laws in place in China, but they are not being enforced effectively at this point in time. There also seems to be a class division involved in the acceptance of educated disabled …

How can the business maximize revenue while providing discounts? This research suggests that hospitality operators may stimulate add-on purchases with the adoption of surprise discounts. Two experiments investigated factors that influence hospitality consumers’ ancillary spending. Study 1 tested the discount and product type effects on additional spending intentions for a cruise booking. Study 2 identified how the depth of surprise discount and add-on product type influence consumers’ add-on purchase decisions for an online hotel booking. The findings indicate that a surprise discount and hedonic items induce consumers’ unplanned purchases. A hedonic add-on item is preferred over a utilitarian item when …
