How Special Is Special Interest Tourism – And How Special Are Special Interest Tourists? A Perspective Article In A Chinese Context, Jun Wen, Mao-Ying Wu

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Special interest tourism has emerged as a valuable niche market for tourism destinations in the past decade. However, tourism scholars have generally struggled to answer McKercher and Chan’s [2005. How special is special interest tourism? Journal of Travel Research, 44(1), 21–31] question, ‘How special is special interest tourism?’ Such ambiguity extends to the related enquiry, ‘How special are special interest tourists?’, in attempting to define special interest tourists. This perspective research letter discusses these questions in terms of Chinese outbound tourism. Based upon the reflection of previous research, the authors’ thoughts and ongoing research in this area, knowledge …

Despite stopovers being a part of long-haul air travel since commercial flights commenced over 80 years ago, the first published research on the phenomenon did not appear until 2016. Also, even though destination image has been the most researched construct in the destination marketing literature, no studies had measured perceptions of a destination in the context of a stopover until 2018. This study makes a contribution to this emerging research field by reporting how a quasi-experimental design found previous visitation enhances destination image and destination loyalty in …

© The Author(s) 2020. This research note reports an investigation into the personal values that are salient to consumers when considering stopover destinations during long-haul travel. The findings, from personal interviews using the Repertory Test and laddering analysis, present destination marketers with potential brand positioning themes based on personal values. One of the greatest challenges facing destination marketers is developing a succinct brand positioning theme representative of a multiattributed entity that effectively differentiates from competing places offering similar attributes and benefits. It is argued that the development of a brand identity based on personal values, which subsume a myriad of …

Increasing Airports' On-Time Arrival Performance Through Airport Capacity And Efficiency Indicators, Nurettin Dinler, William B. Rankin Jan 2020

Increasing Airports' On-Time Arrival Performance Through Airport Capacity And Efficiency Indicators, Nurettin Dinler, William B. Rankin

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

To optimize the U.S. airports’ operational performance, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides various metric values (i.e., average gate arrival delays, the average number of daily aircraft operations, effective gate-to-gate times, and taxi-in and taxi-out times) attributed to NextGen programs. The U.S. airports are now expected of designing more efficient arrival and departure procedures as part of their NextGen capabilities. This study, therefore, examined the relationship between airport efficiency and capacity indicators, provided by the FAA as metric values, and the U.S. airports’ on-time arrival rates over the period from 2009 to 2017. To test the relationship and build a …

Understanding Pro-Environmental Binning Behaviour Of National Park Visitors: A Cross-Cultural Study, Kourosh Esfandiar

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The growing importance of people’s pro-environmental behaviours (PEBs) in relation to reducing their negative impacts and/or increasing their positive impacts in natural areas has attracted considerable research interest. Visitor engagement in pro-environmental activities is one of the key elements in maintaining and improving a national park’s ecological and biological resources. These resources are often the main components of tourism products developed in nature-based destinations.

A specific concern for many national park managers is the generation of litter by visitors. A PEB to solve the problem of litter management in national parks is binning i.e. putting litter in a bin. As …
