During the summer months of 1994 through 2000, the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies at the University of Central Florida has conducted a survey of Central Florida hospitality industry properties regarding wage rates and employee benefits. This ongoing project has been sponsored by the Hotel Human Resource Association of Central Florida and has been supported by the Central Florida Hotel Motel Association. This comprehensive study solicits and reports data on wages and benefits from 353 hospitality organization covering 120 occupational/hourly job titles and 46 management/supervisory position. The impetus behind this project stems from an incident in February 1998 when several "gay" cruises originating from Europe and the U.S. were refused docking privileges in various parts of the Caribbean, invoking responses from British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. officials, both insisting on the egregious violation of human rights. The on-going dilemma over the docking of gay cruise ships led me to ask questions about the constructions of community created through and against such encounters and the production of a global gay identity that is contested by postcolonial situations. The first of three Lewis and Clark related studies funded by Montana's Tourism Advisory Council in fiscal year 2000, this report provides visitor projections for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in 2003-2006 as well as profiles of those visitors. The study included over 2,000 telephone surveys in the contiguous United States less Montana and is a nationally representative cross-section of the U.S. population. In addition, the report examines interest in and awareness of the Lewis & Clark Expedition and the Bicentennial.

Analysis of 1998 nonresident travel spending in Montana for the counties of Cascade, Custer, Flathead, Gallatin, Lewis and Clark, Missoula, Richland, Silver Bow and Yellowstone. Also includes analysis of spending in Great Falls, Miles City, Kalispell, Bozeman, Helena, Missoula, Sidney, Butte, and Billings. Data includes total spending, distribution of spending by sector, length of stay in Montana, per capita spending, and summer trip characteristics of visitor age, travel group type, accommodations used, and visitor origin for each geographical location.

Potential hotel guests who are not participants in a convention are many times able to negotiate their rates whereas convention participants pay higher fixed rates. Convention participants may begin representing themselves as nonconvention participants to obtain these lower rates. This will reduce the number of rooms that can be counted toward a convention-room block and may reduce the hotel's average daily rate or occupancy percentage. It is in the best interest of convention organizers and hotel executives if rate integrity exists among hotels in convention cities. Since before the end of the Cold War, terrorism acts have had major effects on tourism destinations. As a result, the 'shadowy, mobile, and unpredictable' forces of terrorism are becoming an unfortunate part of the travel and tourism landscape. Few can forget the explosion that killed three in Paris in 1986, the home-made pipe bomb in Tel Aviv in 1990, the November 1997 massacre of 58 tourists at Luxor's Temple of Hatshepsut in Egypt, and the Kenyan and Tanzanian US Embassy truck bombings killing 263 in August 1998.
