Excerpt From (Same) Sex Tourism, Jasbir Puar
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
The impetus behind this project stems from an incident in February 1998 when several "gay" cruises originating from Europe and the U.S. were refused docking privileges in various parts of the Caribbean, invoking responses from British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. officials, both insisting on the egregious violation of human rights. The on-going dilemma over the docking of gay cruise ships led me to ask questions about the constructions of community created through and against such encounters and the production of a global gay identity that is contested by postcolonial situations. Ironically, the U.S. and British states advocate protection …

Rate Integrity In Convention Cities, Carl A. Boger, Je'anna Abbott, Li-Chun Lin, Amy Heinemann
Rate Integrity In Convention Cities, Carl A. Boger, Je'anna Abbott, Li-Chun Lin, Amy Heinemann
Department of Hospitality and Tourism Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Potential hotel guests who are not participants in a convention are many times able to negotiate their rates whereas convention participants pay higher fixed rates. Convention participants may begin representing themselves as nonconvention participants to obtain these lower rates. This will reduce the number of rooms that can be counted toward a convention-room block and may reduce the hotel's average daily rate or occupancy percentage. It is in the best interest of convention organizers and hotel executives if rate integrity exists among hotels in convention cities. This study compares the rate integrity between convention cities and provides suggestions on how …
Tourism And Terrorism: A Historical Analysis Of Major Terrorism Acts And Their Impact On Tourism Destinations, Abraham Pizam, Ginger Smith
Tourism And Terrorism: A Historical Analysis Of Major Terrorism Acts And Their Impact On Tourism Destinations, Abraham Pizam, Ginger Smith
Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Since before the end of the Cold War, terrorism acts have had major effects on tourism destinations. As a result, the 'shadowy, mobile, and unpredictable' forces of terrorism are becoming an unfortunate part of the travel and tourism landscape. Few can forget the explosion that killed three in Paris in 1986, the home-made pipe bomb in Tel Aviv in 1990, the November 1997 massacre of 58 tourists at Luxor's Temple of Hatshepsut in Egypt, and the Kenyan and Tanzanian US Embassy truck bombings killing 263 in August 1998. This paper provides a quantitative analysis of major terrorism events around the …

Promoting Cultural Tourism, Charles Calhoun
Promoting Cultural Tourism, Charles Calhoun
Maine Policy Review
Cultural tourism is one of the fastest growing segments of the tourism industry, attracting visitors who tend to stay longer, spend more, and travel in the off-season. Yet, as Calhoun observes, the idea that Maine offers culture as well as scenery is still not part of the state’s self-image. Calhoun urges regions to think creatively and comprehensively about their cultural resources. Among other things, Calhoun encourages the development of regional cultural trails where tourists are linked from one destination to the next. He argues that in the southern- and mid-coast regions, such an approach could help to alleviate coastal pressure …
Planning For Ecotourism On The Coast Of Maine, Natalie Springuel
Planning For Ecotourism On The Coast Of Maine, Natalie Springuel
Maine Policy Review
Ecotourism, or nature-related travel, is one of the fastest growing types of tourism. This is particularly good news for Maine, a state rich in scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities. However, as Natalie Springuel cautions, without good planning and good management, the impacts of ecotourism may harm the very resources that make it viable. Springuel describes four elements of good ecotourism planning and management that came to the fore during a recent set of interviews with ecotourism guides, environmental advocates, and tourism promoters. While Springuel endorses the growth in Maine's ecotourism industry, at some point, she argues, it will be up …

Analysis Of An Ecotourist Based Management Strategy: Crystal Cave, Yanchep National Park, Western Australia, Charles Priddle
Theses : Honours
Ecotourism has quickly become one of the most influential and prominent terms used within the tourism industry today. With its many obscure definitions ecotourism has also been used to support a great number of unsustainable tourist developments. This study examined whether ecotourism had the ability to ensure ecological and financial sustainability through increased public exposure and appreciation to an ecologically sensitive area. One place in which this notion is being put to the test is in Crystal Cave, a popular tourist destination inside Yanchep National Park, 50 kilometres north of Perth. This cave is named after the beautiful reflections off …
