A Longitudinal Study Of Consumer Perceptions Of Travel Websites: The Case Of Hong Kong, Shanshan Qui, Rosanna Leung, Rob Law, Dimitrois Buhalis

Hospitality Review

Knowing how consumers perceive travel websites can help practitioners better understand consumers’ online requirements. This paper reports the findings of a longitudinal study that investigated the changes and trends in the profile and behavior of online travel-website users in Hong Kong. The profiles of e-buyers and e-browsers in 2009, when compared with those established by prior studies conducted in 2000 and 2007, point in a new direction for practitioners and researchers investigating online travelwebsite user behavior. The results indicated that more middle-aged consumers have become online travel-website users, and that website security and price are perceived to be the most …

A Case Study Of Health Tourism In The Jeju Province, South Korea, Young Hoon Kim, Changsan Boo, Ilhan Demirer, Mincheol Kim

Hospitality Review

The United States Census Bureau (2006) reported that in 2005 more than 46 million Americans lacked health insurance, and that by 2019 national spending for health care would exceed $4.5 trillion (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2010). Because those numbers are expected to increase, health tourists are seeking better opportunities for low-cost, high-quality treatment in other countries, plus the added benefit of experiencing foreign cultures. Health tourism is a rapidly growing market in both advanced and developing countries. The purpose of this study was to develop an applicable model of health tourism, the Jeju-Style Health Tourism Model, for Jeju …

The Construction Of Sport Heritage Attractions, Gregory Ramshaw

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Sport can be heritage, and sport heritage attractions such as halls of fame, museums, and stadium tours can be one of the more potent forms of heritage tourism. However, few studies have examined sport heritage attractions, nor considered their construction. This paper examines three ways in which sport heritage attractions are constructed, exploring in particular the human dimensions of sport heritage, the link between sport heritage and legacy, and the relationship between sport heritage, tourism and globalization. Several outcomes of these constructions are examined, both in terms of the representation sport heritage as well as implications for the attractions themselves. …

Tracking Tourists: Mobility, Experiences And The Supply-Demand Gap In A Swedish Mountain Resort, Bo Svensson, Robert Pettersson, Ingrid Zakrisson

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This study focuses on method development in the areas of visitor and experience tracking. It is about understanding experiences in a time-spatial framework made up by visits to a particular destination. These issues were identified as central for destination stakeholders in their attempts at meeting or exceeding visitor expectations at their destination. Development of methods here thus aims at supporting producers in generating such knowledge. The approach that emerged was to track and measure tourism experiences with the help of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, follow-up surveys and in-depth interviews. The empirical findings are from a case study of the …

Diversification Of The Tourist Landscape On Ghana’S Atlantic Coast: Forts, Castles And Beach Hotel / Resort Operations In The Tourism Industry, Edward Addo

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

European settlements, trans-Atlantic trade in commodities and slaves, and colonization are indispensable components of Ghana’s political history, heritage, and tourism industry. European forts and castles built as far back as 1482 still characterize the Atlantic coast of Ghana. Since March 6, 1957 when Ghana became the first sub-Sahara African country to gain political independence from European colonial rule, the country has faced many socio-economic and political challenges. Tourism did not receive significant political attention until the late 1990s. In more recent years, the industry has experienced remarkable growth and increasing operations of beach hotels and resorts on the Atlantic coast …

Madrid: Literary Fiction And The Imaginary Urban Destination, Graham Busby, Maximiliano E. Korstanje, Charlie Mansfield Jan 2011

Madrid: Literary Fiction And The Imaginary Urban Destination, Graham Busby, Maximiliano E. Korstanje, Charlie Mansfield

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This study selects novels from French and Spanish language traditions, which may not be available to English-speakers, in order to determine if specific aspects throw light on our understanding of Madrid as a destination. Marc Lambron's L'Impromptu de Madrid and Antonio Munoz Molina’s Mysteries of Madrid are taken as proof of the influence the narrative can exert on social daily life and consumption. Narrative foregrounds the fictions which are at stake in imagining the city as destination and also provides a vehicle for presenting the much broader social forces that converge in the author at the time of imagining and …
