Cultural Icons': Media Representations Of Second Homes In New Zealand, Trudie Walters Jan 2014

Cultural Icons': Media Representations Of Second Homes In New Zealand, Trudie Walters

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

New Zealanders have a long history of second home ownership, and the second home landscape is an important part of the New Zealand culture. Traditional second homes are known colloquially as the ‘bach’ or ‘crib’, and it is part of the New Zealand psyche to ‘escape to the bach’ for the weekend, especially over the summer months. However, since the 1960s these traditional second homes have been replaced in many areas by second homes that are indistinguishable from urban homes. They have become much larger, are often architecturally designed and with more modern conveniences and technology than the traditional bach. …

Walking The Ancient Tea Horse Road: The Rise Of The Outdoors And China's First Long Distance Branded Hiking Trail, Edmund Jocelyn, Gary Sigley

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Having made the transition from a life-time acquired skill to something acquired by the casual tourist through a professional operator, outdoor ‘adventure’ tourism is now one of the fastest growing sectors. After having experienced the initial stages of the development of mass tourism, the tourism market in China is undergoing a period of significant diversification in which outdoor adventure tourism in the form of hiking is also a key growth area. In China the hikers, known as ‘donkey friends’, are growing in numbers and exploring new destinations to engage in short and long distance treks. As a result, whilst outdoor …

(Re)Thinking Maori Tourism: The Third Space Of Hybridity, Maria Amoamo Jan 2014

(Re)Thinking Maori Tourism: The Third Space Of Hybridity, Maria Amoamo

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This commentary reflects on the salience of hybridity as a theoretical tool in postcolonial studies. It argues that embedded paradigms such as colonised /coloniser and binary constructs Self/Other become subject to disruptive conjuncture through processes of hybridization and third space enunciation. It seeks to (re)think Māori Tourism as residing in third space inbetween spaces”and renegotiates the articulation of cultural production in a tourism context. Māori Tourism is therefore better understood in terms of cultural engagement that is performatively produced, historically informed, and transformed as new signs of identity.

Re-Evaluating Rural Environments: Rural Tourism Development In Japan, Megumi Doshita Jan 2014

Re-Evaluating Rural Environments: Rural Tourism Development In Japan, Megumi Doshita

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

The beautiful scenery of rural environments has been created by the agricultural and forestry industries but nowadays, in various rural areas, tourism has become lucrative and has developed as a leading industry. When the utilisation of rural environments is evaluated by focusing on the term ‘resources,’ several key aspects in which rural environments are recognised as tourism resources are revealed. In addition, concerning the nature of resources, rural environments utilised for tourism practices are symbolic rather than ecological resources. In Japan, there are three catalysts for transforming rural elements into tourism resources. These transformations are actualised by the expansion of …

Host Perspectives On Ethnic Minority Tourism In Northern Thailand, Alexander Trupp

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

In recent years tourism scholarship has increasingly recognized the role and importance of host perspectives in ethnic minority tourism. The main aim of this paper is to explicate the opinions and perceptions of ethnic minority communities in Northern Thailand. By drawing on emerging concepts of the host gaze I aim to further the understanding of how local residents in the field of ethnic tourism perceive and gaze upon the various actors and dimensions of ethnic tourism. Based on a qualitative research study employing semi-structured interviews and participant observation in two minority villages with different touristic intensity, this paper uncovers local …

Tourism And Religion: An Uneasy Relationship?, Jan Te Kloeze Jan 2014

Tourism And Religion: An Uneasy Relationship?, Jan Te Kloeze

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

The interrelationship of religion and tourism has barely been touched upon in research (Vukonić, 1996). Smart (1996) distinguishes various dimensions of religion, but not in terms of cultural meaning and identity. Changes take place, for instance in Islamic beliefs, from relatively tolerant to extremely intolerant (Bauer, 2011), or in terms of secularisation in Christianity (Giddens, 1993). This paper questions how hosts and host societies perceive tourists’ behaviour while relating their perception to religious (or cultural) convictions. How far does this perception lead to condemnation through disapproval, bans, resistance, or violence? Nevertheless, Cavanaugh (2009) warns against the myth of religious violence.

Film Tourism: The Pre-Production Perspective. A Case Study Of Visit Somerset And The Hollywood Story Of Glastonbury, Natalie Semley, Graham Busby Jan 2014

Film Tourism: The Pre-Production Perspective. A Case Study Of Visit Somerset And The Hollywood Story Of Glastonbury, Natalie Semley, Graham Busby

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Film tourism has been researched now for many years and the consequences of post-production are clear. However, there has been little opportunity to explore the perceptions of filming, pre-production, until now. Using a case study approach to the making of one particular Hollywood film on a rural location, the paper focuses on evaluating the business of film tourism and establishing the perceived impacts of film tourism from advanced practitioners and local residents, respectively. Two stages of data collection were adopted during pre-production: elite interviews and focus groups. The findings reveal that the role of each practitioner shapes their level of …

Challenges To Comsumer Protection Legislation In Tourism Contexts, Verity Greenwood, Larry Dwyer Jan 2014

Challenges To Comsumer Protection Legislation In Tourism Contexts, Verity Greenwood, Larry Dwyer

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Many destinations worldwide have enacted laws to protect consumers in general but which have relevance to tourists as consumers and thus destination competitiveness. The impact of any such consumer protection, however, is limited by certain complexities that erode consumer confidence within tourism contexts. These relate to unstable tourism environments, the changing dynamics of the travel services chain, growing product complexity, information failures, changes in consumer values, and technological change. Examples are provided of consumer laws relevant to each of these important features of tourism. Issues for further research into the links between consumer protection legislation and destination competitiveness are discussed.

Embodying Mallorquinness Through Performativity And Narration Of Mallorquin Dance, Linda Dankworth Jan 2013

Embodying Mallorquinness Through Performativity And Narration Of Mallorquin Dance, Linda Dankworth

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

The Mallorcan dancers' sense of embodying Mallorquiness as stylistic qualities of their stage performances, produces in them a sense of representing a double identity: one for themselves in social contexts performing improvised dances as a contemporary image to each other, and another that is more ancient and projects the romantic nationalism associated with the dances' origins in stage presentations for tourists. It is the stage presentations that are a focus of this paper, where an ancient identity is created in the visual imagery of the Mallorcan dancers’ performances as a reconstruction of their past. This paper explores the relationship between …

The Working Class On Holiday: British Comedy In Benidorm And Classed Tourism, Mark E. Casey Jan 2013

The Working Class On Holiday: British Comedy In Benidorm And Classed Tourism, Mark E. Casey

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

In drawing from the popular TV comedy Benidorm this paper seeks to engage with research and discourses held around working class tourism. The paper will at first discuss Benidorm, focusing upon the characters within the show and asking how is social class presented and performed? And ask who or what are we really laughing at? The paper then moves to examine the background to the birth of the package holiday and the development of the mass tourism resort in Spain. It then draws on writing and research focused around social class and tourism, in particular the work of Andrews (2009, …

Spring Break Travel: Motivations And Behaviour In A Mexican Destination, J. Carlos Monterrubio, M. Marivel Mendoza-Ontiveros

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Spring break travel is a growing market and has become a relevant research object. Specifically, binge drinking, illicit drug use and high-risk sexual behaviour have become the focus of academic attention. Identifying such behaviour is relevant in designing policies for tourism management, particularly for the reduction of negative implications of such behaviours. This descriptive study aimed to identify the motivations, alcohol consumption, drug use and sexual behavioural patterns of spring break travellers in Acapulco, Mexico. Based on a quantitative approach, a total of 173 male and 112 female North American students were surveyed during spring break 2010. The study revealed …

Bodies, Emotions And Tourism: A Study Of Costa Cruises Commercials, Mariangela Albano, Gaetano Sabato Jan 2013

Bodies, Emotions And Tourism: A Study Of Costa Cruises Commercials, Mariangela Albano, Gaetano Sabato

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Nowadays, tourism industry proposes different opportunities to live a vacation where the body is the main interest and the central focus of experience. Each form of tourism shows a particular universe of representation of the body and a corresponding emotional language. In this context, where bodies and spaces are associated and reciprocally constructed as symbolic languages for the benefit of the tourist’s extraordinary experience, cruise tourism is an interesting case in point to analyze above all because on cruises, people use the space of the ship in different ways and, at the same time, following general corporeal and spatial schemes. …

The Muslim Sports Tourist And The Olympic Games Movement, Karl A. Russell, Noëlle O'Connor Jan 2013

The Muslim Sports Tourist And The Olympic Games Movement, Karl A. Russell, Noëlle O'Connor

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This paper explores the view that the Olympic Games Movement and the modern day Olympic Games while seeking to be a secular event is regarded by many participants and spectators as an event where they are able to demonstrate expressions of their religious faith. The first Olympic Games were staged in ancient Greece and they comprised a series of sporting events staged as a way of honouring the Greek God; Zeus, considered by the Romans to be a pagan god. The origins and mythology surrounding the early Olympic Games had a non-secular basis and led to an almost intrinsic belief …

Worship & Sightseeing; Building A Partnership Approach To A Ministry Of Welcome, Peter Wiltshier, Alan Clarke Jan 2013

Worship & Sightseeing; Building A Partnership Approach To A Ministry Of Welcome, Peter Wiltshier, Alan Clarke

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This paper explores diverse opportunities for partnerships between the sacred and secular at religious sites. It identifies ways in which tourism suppliers can work collaboratively with sacred sites to enable sites to meet the demands of contemporary secular and sacred stakeholders. In the review of contemporary literature we consider supply and demand issues, site management, key components of partnership, ecumenical co-creation resources, cost-benefit and marketing needs. The paper is predicated on the provision of information and interpretation services for guidance, and development of all of these services. Methodologically, a participant observation approach was employed to confirm that tourism fits the …

Historical-Theological Models Of Pilgrimage As A Resource For Faith Tourism, Jonathan M. Wooding Jan 2013

Historical-Theological Models Of Pilgrimage As A Resource For Faith Tourism, Jonathan M. Wooding

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Pilgrimage is often seen as a physical journey to a sacred destination fixed by custom, destination-centred and broadly penitential in tone. The work of anthropologists in the last century broadened definitions to consider pilgrimage, across a range of faiths, in terms of a journey of transition and formation of identity. More recent historical scholarship has critiqued the longer development of our idea of pilgrimage, as well as its theological structures and markers. This diachronic approach to pilgrimage has also considered its origins with respect to early Christian conceptions of the life of the Christian in society and found resonances for …

Linking The Pilgrimage Experience To Best Practice: The Lessons Of The Recultivatur Project, Alan Clarke, Ágnes Raffay

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This paper will focus on the early findings of the RECULTIVATUR project, a SEE funded partnership which is exploring the inclusion of religious-related cultural values in the planning and development processes of urban centres, systems of settlements and surrounding rural areas. The 15 partners have contributed 35 case studies based on the religious tourism in their areas and the University of Pannonia have been responsible for collating and conducting the initial analysis of these cases. Here we will focus on pilgrimage and the linkages which have emerged from these examples regarding other cultural and heritage tourism experiences. Our analysis of …

Visitors To Religious Sites In South Western Nigeria - Their Experience Of The Physical Infrastructure, Elizabeth Ifeyinwa Benson

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This paper assesses the tourism experience and activities of visitors to religious sites in South Western Nigeria, in order to develop an effective and efficient strategy for the development of religious tourism. Religious tourism is a form of tourism whereby people of faith travel individually or in groups for pilgrimage, missionary, fellowship or leisure purposes. There is a paucity of research on the religious tourism segment in Nigeria. Existing tourism studies focus on ecological, cultural, heritage and historical sites. The paper was born out of my desire for exploratory research on religious tourism in developing countries. Data for this research …

Concept Design – An Innovative Approach To Learning: The Case Of Saint James’ Way As A Playground For Meaningful Learning Experiences, Florencia Cueto Pedrotti

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Co-creation is increasingly being used as a tool for companies to position their products in the market. The aim is to enhance a dialogue with customers and enhance firm-customer value. In the experience industry co-creation is also increasingly linked with another major trend: storytelling. The aim of this narrative technique is to build a story around a business, a product or a destination. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and highlight the application of these techniques, together with experiential learning, in order to generate a new point of view on the learning process. These techniques are applied to …

Creativity In The Johari Window: An Alternative Model For Creating Tourism Programmes, Márta Jusztin Jan 2012

Creativity In The Johari Window: An Alternative Model For Creating Tourism Programmes, Márta Jusztin

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Alongside the recent cultural tourism trends of edutainment, active participation, learning, and the interest in the ‘unique’; the desire of tourists to get involved in the creative process has been steadily gaining popularity. The final aim of this desire for involvement is not necessarily the creation of an artwork, but rather the process of experiencing. This is where creativity and creative activities play an important role, even in tourism. This paper examines the forms and perspectives of participation and creativity in tourism supply by developing an alternative JoHari model; exploring creative tourism from the perspective of co-creation between tourists and …

Tourist Creative Processes And Experiences In The European Cultural Itinerary ‘The Phoenicians’ Route’, Eliana Messineo

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Cultural itineraries represent a favourable context for the development of creative processes and experiences. This paper examines the creative activities and projects of a European Cultural Itinerary, The Phoenicians’ Route. The aim was to explore the creative features related to the production and development of the cultural-tourist offer, through a survey of participants in a pilot project, and on a network of local partners that co-operate in running the itinerary. The results of this research provide a rating of the total potential of itinerary itself, contributing to its definition as a ‘creative system’.

Creative Tourism In Saint Petersburg: The State Of The Art, Valery Gordin, Marina Matetskaya Jan 2012

Creative Tourism In Saint Petersburg: The State Of The Art, Valery Gordin, Marina Matetskaya

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Tourism development in St. Petersburg, which is a major cultural centre, has improved in terms of tourist flows; both tourism demand and tourist products have become more diverse. These improvements give grounds for a fairly optimistic prognosis for the tourist industry in St. Petersburg. At the same time, there are a number of factors which may endanger sustainable development of tourism in St. Petersburg. The current situation calls for a more flexible and innovative approach to industry development. Among these factors are the pronounced seasonal character of tourism, the short-term visits of most of the tourists, and the rather conservative, …

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

In the last decade, creativity has become a buzz word in developmental context, from creative industries, creative classes, creative economy, creative cities, creative business, creative governance to creative tourism. Creative industries have often been used in the context of creative cities’ development creating their image internationally especially through tourism. In order to attract visitors, a new type of tourism has been developed: creative tourism. The article questions its definition as it also questions the need of cities to be re-branded through creative tourism. Two Croatian case studies are featured as to re-think the position of creative tourism in local development: …
