Global Strategies Of Taiwanese It Manufacturers, James Y S Liu

IIMB Management Review

Liberalisation has seen many economies, especially in Asia, opening their hitherto sheltered domestic markets to global competition and providing greater opportunities to trade and foreign investment. The spinoffs of liberalisation bring in new implications, opportunities and challenges for the governments as well as the organisations involved. Round Table features some of the issues discussed in the conference on 'Managing Economic Liberalisation in South Asia : Directions for the 21st Century' held in Chennai, India, from August 10 -13. Selvarajah examines the realignment of economies towards globalisation as a development of regionalism. The shift in economic forces away from multilateral arrangements …

Knowledge: The New Republic, K L Chopra

IIMB Management Review

As the societies of the world have progressed from the spoken to the written medium, to the audiovisual and finally to the electronic media for communication, civilisations have undergone enormous changes. With the IT revolution, coupled with an era of globalised economics and commerce, 'knowledge' power, as K L Chopra puts it, will increasingly dominate the governance, social and economic structure and lifestyle of a nation. In this Republic of Knowledge, the 'knowledge worker', 'knowledge engineering' and 'knowledge factories' will play a pivotal role in determining its health and wealth. However, it remains to be seen whether the new Republic …

Ssis And Technology Management, Ganesh Prabhu

IIMB Management Review

Since Independence, Small Scale Industries (SSIs), have been playing a stellar role in the economic development of the country. SSIs account for more than a third of the total manufacturing output and generate almost 35 per cent of the country's exports. Importantly, they provide employment to more than ten million Indians. With the onset of economic liberalisation in the country-since 1991- even SSIs have been trying to redefine their role and adapt effectively to the changing macro-economic environment, where market forces are calling the tune. The Abid Hussain Committee, which was constituted to re-define the role of SSIs in the …

Indian Software Industry: A Diagnostic Analysis, Premchander

IIMB Management Review

With the introduction of stringent requirements relating to foreign ownership of businesses in India in the early seventies, the information technology boom began in the country with alert entrepreneurs capitalising quickly on this development. Aided by the international demand for software and among other things, the low-cost availability of skilled workforce, the Indian software industry grew rapidly. But today, several of the earlier competitive advantages are being eroded. A profile of the industry has been drawn up assessing its vulnerability through its strengths and weaknesses, the threats and opportunities it faces, and the value drivers in the industry.

Are Private Basic Telecom Project Viable In India?, Avijit Bhattacharya

IIMB Management Review

The first effects of liberalisation were felt in the Indian telecommunications sector with the privatisation of basic telecom services. With the market having opened up, foreign companies are entering the country in droves bringing with them latest technology and competitive pricing structure. Taking the Karnataka telecom experience as a model, the unfolding scenario has been examined as well as whether the astronomical license fees quoted are justified

Managing Creativity For Corporate Excellance By Pn Rastogi : Macmillan India, 1996., Nina Jacob Jun 1996

Managing Creativity For Corporate Excellance By Pn Rastogi : Macmillan India, 1996., Nina Jacob

IIMB Management Review

This particular book has a few sections which are best skipped by readers who are unfamiliar with the subject matter of creativity. Chapter 2 begins, “Creativity has come to be recognized as a valuable resource influenced by competitive factors”. What in effect Rastogi implies is that the capacity o be creative can imbue  an organisation with a competitive edge over its rivals, as is borne out after reading the section entitled “creativity as a competive resource”. For executives who want to outperform their peers, simply having a high need for achievement is not enough. Managers should know how to creatively …

Technology And Business: The Missing Link, S Chandrasekar Jun 1996

Technology And Business: The Missing Link, S Chandrasekar

IIMB Management Review

Technology, despite its critical importance to business, has far too often played a secondary role compared to other major management functions like marketing, finance, human resources development, production or corporate planning. The success of many US based technology driven companies in electronics and biotechnology in the seventies and early eighties and the Japanese and German economic miracles, driven largely by technology upgradation in specific targeted industries, should serve to renew interest in the study of the role of technology in improving business performance.

Organisational Ethnography: An Illustrative Application In The Study Of Indian R&D Settings By V Suchitra Mouly And Jayaram K Sankaran. Sage Publications, 1995., S Chandrashekar

IIMB Management Review

Organisational Ethnography, by Suchitra Mouly and Jayaram Sankaran applies the insider or ethnographic perspective to the study of Indian R&D settings. In spite of its rather forbidding title, (ethnography according to the Webster’s dictionary is cultural anthropology), there are some interesting and novel aspects to this research work.

Business Quality-The Cutting Edge, V Chandrasekaran Mar 1996

Business Quality-The Cutting Edge, V Chandrasekaran

IIMB Management Review

A World Bank study conducted through the International Data Corporation (IDC) India and Maxi/Micro Inc places the size of the 1995 software service market at $100 billion. 75% of this opportunity originates from six countries : theUS, Japan, Germany, France, the UK and Italy. The market is growing at 15.5%. per annum. Since domestic suppliers in these countries are increasingly unable to meet the value-for-money’ equation, the bulk of this business has to be outsourced to other countries. As a result, the foreign opportunity & market ($1.4 billion in 1991) is growing at 40% per annum. In the last few …

Shouldn’T Management Processes Be Reengineered, Too?, K B C Saxena Mar 1996

Shouldn’T Management Processes Be Reengineered, Too?, K B C Saxena

IIMB Management Review

When organisations reengineer their business processes, they generally tend to concentrate on operational processes rather than management activities. This is because organisation management is traditionally regarded as a function, rather than a process. Process orientation provides an opportunity to improve organisational performance and has been at the root of organisational improvement philosophies such as ‘total quality management’ (TQM) and ‘business process reengineering’ (BPR). The changing business environment poses challenges to management in terms of better coordination, timeto- market, management control, organisational learning, etc. In order to meet these challenges, it is imperative that process orientation should be extended to management …

A Framework For Mapping And Managing Creativity And Innovation, S Mohan Dec 1990

A Framework For Mapping And Managing Creativity And Innovation, S Mohan

IIMB Management Review

Organisations and individuals live in an era of constant change. Growth and survival are dependent on coping with these trends and changes. Many organisations suffer from increasing costs, stagnating productivity and shrinking profits, mostly due to lack of original thinking by the management and the employees. In today’s business, organisations face new problems, unique opportunities and the unexpected. The corporate management, apart from coping on a reactive basis, must develop sheer power of new innovative ideas. New products and services, effective marketing strategies and new technologies need to be developed using creative ideas.

Technology Development: Were The Developing Countries On The Wrong Track During The Last Three Decades?, C V S Ratnam

IIMB Management Review

Since the end of World War II, the tremendous development of technology, and its application in producing goods and services in abundance continued to make life of human beings satisfactory. In this effort, countries in Europe, the USA and later on Japan made great progress. Witnessing these developments, developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America made efforts to encourage pursuit of science and technology and their applications for the establishment of industry, and production of goods and services for their people. However, advances that had taken place in countries in Europe, the USA and Japan did not come about …
