Blending Business And It Strategy : A Conceptual Model, R Ramaswamy Dec 2002

Blending Business And It Strategy : A Conceptual Model, R Ramaswamy

IIMB Management Review

In this new age of the knowledge-based economy, the search for a more dynamic and sustainable competitive advantage has led to many organisations investing substantially in IT–based tools and solutions. But in most cases these investments have not been justified by the returns. The main reason for this is the disjointed manner of framing business and IT strategies leading to the segregation of the people, process, and technology aspects of management. Moreover, the benefits are marginal if carried out over existing strategies, structures, and processes. To derive the real benefits of investments in IT and paradigms of transformation in the …

Attribute-Based Differentiation Of Alternatives, Jeffrey Keisler Nov 2002

Attribute-Based Differentiation Of Alternatives, Jeffrey Keisler

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

An intermediate step is introduced to the decision dialogue process for decision analysis. Alternatives are refined after they have been generated within a strategy table but before they are subject to more detailed evaluation. Two or more judges create a subjective mapping from alternatives to attributes that will later be mapped to criteria. In strategy tables, each of the alternative strategies consists of a coherent set of choices made across several decisions that are to be coordinated. These strategic alternatives are modified so as to increase their differentiation in the attribute space, rather than in the decision space alone. When …

The Balanced Scorecard At Philips Electronics, Andra Gumbus, Bridget M. Lyons Nov 2002

The Balanced Scorecard At Philips Electronics, Andra Gumbus, Bridget M. Lyons

WCBT Faculty Publications

The drive to implement the balanced scorecard at Philips Electronics came from the top down - as a directive from the Board of Management in Europe to all Philips divisions and companies worldwide. The directive went to each of the companies and their quality departments, with the effort in the medical division headed by the Quality Steering Committee that reports to the president of Philips Medical Systems. Philips Electronics has used the balanced scorecard to align company vision, focus employees on how they fit into the big picture, and educate them on what drives the business. An essential aid to …

The Effects Of Business-University Alliances On Innovative Output And Financial Performance: A Study Of Publicly Traded Biotechnology Companies, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, D. Robley Wood Oct 2002

The Effects Of Business-University Alliances On Innovative Output And Financial Performance: A Study Of Publicly Traded Biotechnology Companies, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, D. Robley Wood

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Companies in the biotechnology industry face major challenges in developing and commercializing new products. Focusing on publicly traded biotechnology firms that are not members of university incubators or research parks, this paper argues that the links these companies develop with universities can have beneficial effects on a company's operations. Analysis of 2457 alliances undertaken by 147 biotechnology firms shows that companies with university linkages have lower research and development (R&D) expenses while having higher levels of innovative output. However, the results do not support the proposition that companies with university linkages achieve higher financial performance than similar firms without such …

Competitiveness : Perceptions, Reflections And Directions, D K Banwet, Kirankumar Momaya, Himanshu Kumar Shee Sep 2002

Competitiveness : Perceptions, Reflections And Directions, D K Banwet, Kirankumar Momaya, Himanshu Kumar Shee

IIMB Management Review

Competitiveness has gained importance as a subject of study during the last decade or so. The initial stimulus came during the eighties when the US experienced an economic decline. As American firms started losing ground all over the world in significantly important industries such as automobile, shipbuilding, electronics and steel, researchers began focussing attention on country and industry level competitiveness. Given India’s low and declining ranking in the Global Competitiveness Report and the World Competitiveness Yearbook, it is imperative that academics, industrialists and policy makers make a serious study of the factors that drive competitiveness at all levels, and take …

Indian Steel Industry At The Crossroads : A Strategic Perspective, Gautam Sinha, Satyajit Jena Sep 2002

Indian Steel Industry At The Crossroads : A Strategic Perspective, Gautam Sinha, Satyajit Jena

IIMB Management Review

In the post liberalisation era, the Indian steel industry is passing through an intensely turbulent transformation, belying the rosy forecasts of the early 90s. The international recession in steel is expected to persist for at least two more years, along with competition of a high order, posing a serious threat to the Indian steel industry. Gautam Sinha and Satyajit Jena attempt to link the intrinsic and extrinsic forces operating on the Indian steel industry in order to gain a holistic understanding of it. Using performance indices such as Debt-Equity Ratio, Return on Networth, Net Sales/ Total Assets and Net Profit/ …

Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg Aug 2002

Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg

Fisheries Management Papers

The Department of Fisheries does not want to embark on what is ‘new territory’ in Western Australia without a policy framework to define what is to happen, why it is to happen, and what will happen if the project does or does not succeed. This paper therefore attempts to do three things. 1. It sets in place accepted definitions of reseeding and stock enhancement within the general context of fisheries management in Western Australia. 2. It discusses the policy issues associated with reseeding grazing gastropods and bivalves into the natural environment. 3. It proposes a framework or process to be …

Miscellaneous Publication 6/2001 - Sheep And Goat Industries Biosecurity Plan, Department Of Agriculture Western Australia, Government Of Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

StockGuard has been initiated to develop a series of biosecurity plans for the animal industries in Western Australia. Through StockGuard, representatives from the animal industries have been working with the Department of Agriculture to identify the major threats to each of the animal industries and to develop action plans detailing how these threats will be managed.

The recent Foot and Mouth outbreak in the United Kingdom is a stark example of the potential for exotic disease to devastate an animal industry. The UK experience, along with the 1999 outbreak of virulent Newcastle disease in poultry in New South Wales have …

Corporate Philanthropy As Business Strategy : An Indian Perspective, Laxman Mohanty, Neharika Vohra Jun 2002

Corporate Philanthropy As Business Strategy : An Indian Perspective, Laxman Mohanty, Neharika Vohra

IIMB Management Review

An article in an Indian national daily some time ago indicated that the HRD Ministry of the Government of India had approached the private sector for funds to build a National Education Fund for elementary education programmes. News items such as these raise a number of questions: Why should corporations pay for what the government is supposed to handle? Is a request for funding social projects a unique situation or a commonly occurring event? Are corporations expected to bear the cost of social infrastructure?

R&D Management : Issues And Challenges, Shikha Suman Jun 2002

R&D Management : Issues And Challenges, Shikha Suman

IIMB Management Review

Before the 60s, there was neither literature nor explicit focus on R&D management. The ‘linear model of innovation’1 prevailed, both in the public and the private sector. It was believed that investments in R&D eventually would pay off when research-based products and processes reached production and/or the market. R&D units of companies were generally left to themselves, managed by the unit’s most distinguished scientists. They set their goals and their priorities based largely on scientific criteria alone, albeit within the frames of the company’s current operations and future strategies.

Absorptive Capacity: A Review, Reconceptualization, And Extension, Shaker A. Zahra, Gerard George Apr 2002

Absorptive Capacity: A Review, Reconceptualization, And Extension, Shaker A. Zahra, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Researchers have used the absorptive capacity construct to explain various organizational phenomena. In this article we review the literature to identify key dimensions of absorptive capacity and offer a reconceptualization of this construct. Building upon the dynamic capabilities view of the firm, we distinguish between a firm's potential and realized capacity. We then advance a model outlining the conditions when the firm's potential and realized capacities can differentially influence the creation and sustenance of its competitive advantage.

Success Parameters For Technology Companies In The It Arena - An Indian Perspective, M Chandrasekaran Mar 2002

Success Parameters For Technology Companies In The It Arena - An Indian Perspective, M Chandrasekaran

IIMB Management Review

The very word ‘technology’ in the context of the IT industry conjures up visions of radically different products that are made possible by esoteric and futuristic technology implemented through pure hardware or pure software or increasingly hardware/ software combinations. It is also clear that the evolutionary change to increasingly software intensive solutions is here to stay. In the context of this article, ‘technology companies’ will refer only to companies that are pure software or software / hardware plays that operate in the area of emerging technologies. Such companies will typically develop Intellectual Property( IP), license this IP, and use it …

Ten Commandments For Organisational Renaissance, Pritam Singh, Asha Bhandarker Mar 2002

Ten Commandments For Organisational Renaissance, Pritam Singh, Asha Bhandarker

IIMB Management Review

With  the  world  on  the brink of developments that  are  transforming  the way people transact business, the time is appropriate for reflection on many fundamental issues that Indian organisations have to deal with in the next couple of de-cades. Increasingly, countries in the developed world are acknowledging  Indian  software  talent,  the pool  of  engineering  and  R&D skills.  In fact, a World Bank re-port in the mid-90s predicted that India was  poised  to  become  an economic superpower. However, unless sustained, strategic and collective efforts are made,  and Indian companies reinvent them-selves  to  prepare  for  the  new challenges, India will miss out …

Sampling Concepts, Paul Boyd, Ph.D. Jan 2002

Sampling Concepts, Paul Boyd, Ph.D.

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles

The usefulness of any research is dependent upon how well the group studied represents the group about which decisions are to be made or conclusions drawn. That is, it depends upon how well the sample reflects relevant characteristics of the population. When it is possible to study every member of that group there is no problem, for on these occasions we can easily calculate the exact attribute (parameter) of interest for our population.

For example, if we were interested in determining the average number of gallons of gasoline sold to customers at our service station yesterday, we …

The Need For And Meaning Of Positive Organizational Behavior, Fred Luthans Jan 2002

The Need For And Meaning Of Positive Organizational Behavior, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

This essay draws from the emerging positive psychology movement and the author’s recent articles on the need for and meaning of a positive approach to organizational behavior. Specifically, the argument is made that at this time, the OB field needs a proactive, positive approach emphasizing strengths, rather than continuing in the downward spiral of negativity trying to fix weaknesses. However, to avoid the surface positivity represented by the non-sustainable best-sellers, the case is made for positive organizational behavior (POB) to take advantage of the OB field’s strength of being theory and research driven. Additional criteria for this version of POB …

Network Characteristics And Its Implications : Case Study Of Two Firms In Buyer-Supplier Relationships, Geok Eng Kwee

Student Works (2000-2009)

Cooperative relationships among firms are an area of research of interest to academicians and practitioners alike. Such cooperative relationships have evolved into a new form of business model known as network. Telecentres are an important type of information and communication technology (ICT) system particularly assisting rural and urban communities in developing countries, but the focus is often put on social development, sometimes on static economic returns, and rarely on dynamic economic aspects. This paper develops a basis for understanding the factors behind financial success in a dynamic setting based on the concept of increasing returns. This is applied to telecentres according to the stage of maturity of their information services. The framework is illustrated with literature- and interview-based cases, and will help an understanding of ways in which telecentres can scale-up …
