Building A Platform For Advancing Women's Engagement In Sport, Swarali H. Patil Jan 2023

Building A Platform For Advancing Women's Engagement In Sport, Swarali H. Patil

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Women are active participants in sport, as administrative leaders, coaches, and elite athletes, and it is important to understand and continue to advance their engagement and experiences in that realm. Women have made gains in leadership but their actual progress towards such roles continues to be slow-paced (Burton & Leberman, 2017), indicating that additional action is still needed. Further, women’s experiences in sport roles are critical to their performance in, and for the organization, and to their personal job satisfaction (Kanter, 1977, 1993). Yet, they may face several challenges in their work, that may reduce their autonomy in relation to …

Exploring Institutional Dynamics: Barriers And Opportunities For Health Through Sport, Taylor N. Sutherland

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis explored how multisport service organizations (MSOs) have responded to the institutional pressure to incorporate health into organizational practice. A qualitative exploratory methodology underpinned by an institutional theoretical framework facilitated a snapshot understanding of the institutional environment within the Canadian sport landscape. Data was collected from online document and policy sources, and later analyzed using Hartwig and Dearing’s (1979) two-step exploratory data analysis process. First, institutional theory was applied to capture the institutional change, institutional pressure, and organizational response within the Canadian sport sector. In a second round of analysis, data was re-expressed using archetype theory. Organizations were classified …

Reflections On Return To Sport, Rhys A. Desmond

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented community sport organizations with many complex challenges, but also unique opportunities to reflect and rethink their practices (Fullagar, 2020). This study presents an autoethnography of my experiences working as a Technical Leader for a community sport organization (CSO) throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The research questions were: 1) What were the features of organizational capacity that were most important to the CSO’s effectiveness, survival and resilience during the pandemic? and 2) What were the capacity features that were most impactful to my own ability to carry out my role effectively within the club? Through the autoethnographic …

Barriers To Senior Leadership Positions For Women In Sport Management: Perceptions Of Undergraduate Students And Insights From Their Professors, Erika L. Gray

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A number of researchers have investigated the barriers that women often face in attempting to reach the senior leadership levels in sport management organizations (Acosta & Carpenter, 2014; Burton, Grappendorf & Henderson, 2011; Forsyth, Jones, Duval, & Bambridge, 2019; Kane & LaVoi, 2018; LaVoi & Dutove, 2012). This research extended the work of Hancock, Darvin, and Walker (2018) and focused on aspiring sport leaders at a different stage in their careers, specifically when they were in the senior years of their undergraduate programs. The researcher used the Career Pathways Survey instrument (P. Smith, Crittenden, & Caputi, 2012) to produce interval …

Organizational Governance Of Event Impacts, Kylie Wasser Nov 2019

Organizational Governance Of Event Impacts, Kylie Wasser

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study explored the governance of event legacy and/or leveraging. More broadly, this project examined the specific organizational forms that are responsible for delivering event legacy and/or leveraging strategies. This was done using a combination of organizational theories and theories of public policy to understand the unique environment surrounding event legacies. Three distinct phases were utilized in this study. I used a research synthesis to investigate what previous scholars have found regarding event legacy delivery. Next, comparative cases from the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games and the 2015 Toronto Pan Am/Parapan American Games were used to examine what mechanisms previous …

Capacity For Sport For Development, Ryan Clutterbuck

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation explores the management of local sport for development (SFD) in Canada. It uncovers the organizational capacity for local SFD, the processes involved in building capacity to achieve social change through sport, and the perceptions and experiences of National Sport Organization (NSO) leaders regarding SFD. Study 1 explores and uncovers the organizational capacity for local SFD, following Hall et al.’s (2003) framework for non-profit organizational capacity. Using semi-structured interviews, 17 local SFD organizations were asked to describe specific organizational aspects that enabled them to achieve their goals. They identified: familiarity with development issues; grant funding; facilities; and social capital, …

Capacity Building In Community Sport Organizations, Patricia L. Millar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The general purpose of this dissertation was to examine capacity building in community sport organizations (CSOs). Given the position that CSOs occupy in the Canadian sport system, the increasing attention dedicated to organizational capacity of CSOs, and the lack of understanding surrounding the capacity building process, this dissertation endeavours to build on and contribute to each of these bodies of literature by providing insight into the process of capacity building in the context of CSOs, and nonprofit and voluntary organizations more broadly. Specifically, this dissertation involves the development and proposal of a process model of capacity building (Study 1), the …

We Met At The Beach: Examining Sense Of Community Through Charity Sporting Events, Daniel Nabben Jan 2015

We Met At The Beach: Examining Sense Of Community Through Charity Sporting Events, Daniel Nabben

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Researchers have studied the social value of large-scale events in creating a sense of community but not the role small-scale charity sporting events play in fostering a sense of community. There is also a need to examine which managerial aspects may contribute to building a sense of community through small-scale charity sporting events. To focus on that gap in the literature, I utilized a micro-ethnographic approach to examine recreational charity beach volleyball tournaments held on Jeju Island, South Korea, hosted by the charity organization, ‘Jeju Furey’. As an organizer and participant of these beach volleyball tournaments, my insider’s perspective complements …

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of this study was to investigate the landscape of international student-athletes participating in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) with respect to number, sport, and gender breakdown, and to determine the motivations of these athletes for migrating to a Canadian academic institution as well as their experiences. Of the over 10,000 CIS student-athletes, approximately 5% are international student-athletes. In addition, the sports with the highest number of international student-athletes were soccer and basketball for males, and basketball and soccer for females. Understanding Urban Development Through An Event Portfolio: A Case Study Of London, Ontario, Richelle Clark

This study investigates the underdeveloped area of event portfolios in an attempt to fill a gap in the existing literature. This study looks at the strategic positioning of events and the critical role they play in local development. In order to understand this, a case study design was performed in a small-medium scale city in Canada. The purpose of the study was to determine how the city has utilized events for broader local development and enhancing the civic brand. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with local city actors and document analysis were used to further understand the strategies within the …
