Fulling Around: The Shaker Fulling Mill At South Union, Kentucky, Donna C. Parker, Jonathan J. Jeffrey

The fulling mill was an essential component of any successful early-19th century woolen industry. Fullers applied finishing techniques to cloth in order to create a stronger, more attractive, and more useful fabric. In 1813 the Shakers at Kentucky’s South Union community constructed a fulling mill that serviced their own demands for textile finishing processes as well as those of area residents. The fulling mill, aided by the Shakers’ three-year-old carding mill, developed by the 1860s into a full-fledged woolen factory.

The Popular Dry Goods Department Store was organized in 1902 by Adolph Schwartz. The Popular Dry Goods Company records, MS 317, made up of 296 boxes, 63 volumes of newspapers and 5 drawers of oversized materials, detail the officers, stores, finances, operations, and employees of El Paso’s largest locally-owned retail enterprise.

The purpose of this study is to identify the attitudes of the National Food Brokers Association Members in the East North Central states about women working in the food brokerage positions of retail sales representative, sales supervisor, and sales manager. This study examines three hypotheses: (1) The small percentage of women in these positions is due to unawareness of the job titles and opportunities available, (2) The small percentage of women in these positions is due to the fact that top management believes male employees are more effective in relating to principles than women, and, (3) The small percentage of …

The Friedheim Family Papers consist of family histories, correspondence, financial records, wills, land deeds, and newspaper clippings, relating to the Rock Hill, South Carolina family. There is much material concerning the financial affairs and estate of Arnold Friedheim and his brother, Julius Friedheim , owners of Friedheim ’s Department Store, and the heirs to their estates, which included the members of the Marshall Family. Also included are the executors annual reports concerning actions taken in carrying out the terms of the Friedheim’s will and a genealogy of the John Clawson Family.
