Rethinking Retained Earnings In The Additional Funds Needed Formula, James E. Larsen
Rethinking Retained Earnings In The Additional Funds Needed Formula, James E. Larsen
Finance and Financial Services Faculty Publication
This paper critically re-evaluates the traditional application of the Additional Funds Needed formula by analyzing alternate interpretations of retained earnings. It illustrates how definitional shifts influence capital forecasts with a more nuanced approach to financial modeling in growth scenarios. The approach emphasizes numerical clarity, policy realism, and adaptability for financial planning. The paper challenges conventional AFN usage by embedding definitional flexibility and temporal awareness, offering decision-makers clearer visibility into funding sensitivity. It reframes AFN as a dynamic planning tool rather than a static formula, with implications for forecasting, policy-setting, and strategic finance.

This paper presents a chronology, beginning in the early 1900s, of the regulatory environment faced by residential real estate appraisers in the United States. The presentation informs the reader about two financial crises, the savings and loan crisis and the Subprime mortgage crisis. The conditions that led to each crisis, the response of Congress to address each crisis, and the effect of both on residential real estate appraisers are included in the presentation. Prior to these crises, appraisers were basically self-regulated, but today because of concern that inflated appraisals were a contributing cause of the crises they are subject to …

The Impact Of A Letter Of Map Amendment On Flood Plain Property Value, James E. Larsen
The Impact Of A Letter Of Map Amendment On Flood Plain Property Value, James E. Larsen

Substantial empirical evidence indicates properties across the United States that are located within a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) sell at a discount compared to similar properties otherwise located. This result is also true in our sample. Researchers have suggested the price discount equals a combination of the present value of the required flood insurance premiums and the value of uninsurable costs. To identify the portion of the discount applicable to each component, analysts have been required to estimate applicable insurance premiums and to assume a discount rate. The present paper presents a methodology that does not require these prerequisites, …

The unique institutional environment of China's stock markets provides a rich setting to study the relationship between investors‟ behavior and market returns in the case of information inefficiency. This study extends the well documented Dogs of the Dow (Dow Dogs) strategy to China's A share stock market. We find that Dow Dogs portfolios significantly outperform the market benchmark for the period of 1994 to 2009 in China's markets. Further analysis indicates that (1) The fewer Dogs included in the portfolio, the greater the portfolio abnormal returns; (2) In general, the shorter holding period (in months), the greater the portfolio abnormal …

Problem statement: The Dogs of the Dow (Dow Dogs) strategy, which has gained widespread popularity in the U.S., is found to be considerably successful in China’s stock markets. This trading strategy contradicts the well-established efficient market hypothesis. Approach: This study examines the cross-sectional variations in the magnitude of the predictive power of the Dow Dogs strategy using Chinese stocks for 1994-2009. Results: Our results suggest that (1) Significant Dow Dogs effect apply to Class A shares, but not Class B shares; (2) Stocks priced between 1and1and5 demonstrate the strongest Dogs effect among all stock price ranges; (3) Changes in share …
An Investigation Of Promotional Outlet Effectiveness For Ohio Real Estate Brokers, James E. Larsen, Joseph Coleman, Charles S. Gulas
An Investigation Of Promotional Outlet Effectiveness For Ohio Real Estate Brokers, James E. Larsen, Joseph Coleman, Charles S. Gulas

This monograph presents survey data gathered from both Ohio residents and members of the Ohio Association of REALTORS®. The results of the public survey provide interesting information that may enable real estate licensees to effectively target their promotional efforts. The results suggest that if the objective is self promotion, any advertising medium is likely to have limited effectiveness. A large percentage of respondents indicated that they located the agent who assisted them in their housing transaction via reference from a friend or relative. Referrals are so important that a licensee should make every effort to cultivate this activity. Perhaps periodic …

The Impact Of Hardening In The Homeowner's Insurance Market On Ohio Residential Real Estate Brokerage Markets, Joseph Coleman, James E. Larsen

A recently released study sponsored by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) documents hardening in the homeowner’s insurance market nationwide; i.e., property insurance premiums have increased sharply and coverage availability has often been limited. The NAR study did not, however, investigate the impact of this hardening on residential real estate transactions, nor did it include an examination of the transactional impact resulting from the increasing propensity of insurance companies to require property modifications as a condition of issuing a policy. In the present study, survey data collected from 406 members of the Ohio Association of REALTORS® (OAR) is used to …
