From Play To Performance: Building An Effective Organization, Jessica N. Selee, Jade Johnson, Jocelyn N. Murray, Anna Samuelson, Jasmine Li, Andrew Lacanienta, Mat D. Duerden, Mark Widmer

Marriott Student Review

Under the Mentored Experience Grant, six students studies the impact that non-work activities (recreation or leisure) have on individual contributors or organization. Some employees refrain from participating in Leisure-at-Work (LAW) due to lack of time or skill, to cliques, to differing preferences, or fear of negative connotations. Employees report that LAW increases productivity, establishes and enriches social interactions, improves communication, attracts and retains employees in a company, and facilitates a culture of engagement, trust, and camaraderie. At the conclusion of our analysis, we identified areas of future research and recommendations for best practice.

Applying Agile Project Management To Art Museums: A Proposal For Implementing A Generalist Scrum Master, Vincent Sulit

Master's Projects and Capstones

This capstone project examines organizational change, along with its challenges, through case studies in museums and businesses in the private sector, subsequently providing a possible solution for museums to adapt to the current global market economy through the use of Agile Project Management (Agile). I cite recent case studies of art museums implementing Agile for digital product development. This project proposal aims to introduce Agile outside of digital departments, including Exhibitions and Education, with the goal of developing better visitor-centered offerings from museums. This may be achieved through the proposal of a job description for a new museum position of …

Judgements Of Managerial Personality Affecting Employee Job Satisfaction, Makenzi Astore Dec 2017

Judgements Of Managerial Personality Affecting Employee Job Satisfaction, Makenzi Astore

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Personality is the configuration of thought, emotions and behaviors (Funder, 2013). Locke argues that job satisfaction is a positive state that derives from appraisal of a job experience (as cited in Ilies & Judge, 2004, p. 367). Job satisfaction has consistently been shown to affect productivity. The purpose of this study was to determine if employee judgements of managerial personality characteristics contribute to the overall satisfaction of the employee. I surveyed 79 individuals from the Bridgewater State University community and beyond, each being at least 18 years of age and employed to some capacity. The survey measured the level of …

Financial Synergies And Systemic Risk In The Organization Of Bank Afþliates, Elisa Luciano, Clas Wihlborg Dec 2017

Financial Synergies And Systemic Risk In The Organization Of Bank Afþliates, Elisa Luciano, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We analyze theoretically banks’ choice of organizational structures in branches, subsidiaries or stand-alone banks, in the presence of public bailouts and default costs. These structures are characterized by different arrangements for internal rescue of affiliates against default. The cost of debt and leverage are endogenous. For moderate bailout probabilities, subsidiary structures, wherein the two entities provide mutual internal rescue under limited liability, have the highest group value, but also the highest risk taking as measured by leverage and expected loss. We explore the effect of constraints on leverage and policy implications. The conflict of interests between regulators, who minimize systemic …

Using Online Platforms To Engage Employees In Unionism. The Case Of Ibm, Roxana Maiorescu Dec 2017

Using Online Platforms To Engage Employees In Unionism. The Case Of Ibm, Roxana Maiorescu

Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators

To date, there is a paucity of studies that looked into the way unions can use social media platforms to increase employee engagement in activism. Understanding the most effective ways in which unions can make use of online communication to increase membership and raise awareness becomes of paramount importance in light of the decline in union participation that occurred during the last decades and that deepened wage inequality. In addition, union efforts were shown in past studies to be hampered by upper management. Online platforms become an important means that unions can use to eschew managerial control and indirectly increase …

The earth moves against the world. And today the response of the world is clear. The world answers in fire and flood. The more the earth churns the more vicious the world’s response. But the earth still moves. Tonika Sealy Thompson might call it a procession. The earth’s procession is not on the world’s calendar. It is not a parade on a parade ground. It is not in the world’s teleology. Nor is the procession exactly a carnival played to mock or overturn this parade, to take over its grounds. A procession moves unmoved by the world. The earth’s procession …

Enterprise Social Media Use And Impact On Performance: The Role Of Workplace Integration And Positive Emotions, Murad Moqbel, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Organizations struggle to find ways to improve employees’ performance. To date, little research has empirically examined the relationship between enterprise social media use and knowledge workers’ performance. Using social capital theory and the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions as our theoretical framework, we investigate the relationship between enterprise social media use and knowledge workers’ performance. We tested our research model by collecting data from employees working for a large information technology firm in the Midwestern United States and analyzing the data using a structural equation modeling approach. The results suggest that enterprise social media use can increase workplace integration, which …

When Elites Forget Their Duties: The Double-Edged Sword Of Prestigious Directors On Boards, Jana Oehmichen, Daniel Braun, Michael Wolff, Toru Yoshikawa

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business

Previous research indicates that the performance effect of prestigious directors is ambiguous. Our study addresses this issue by integrating the theoretical lens of board capital and the institutional perspective. We argue that prestigious directors can bring benefits as well as costs. We claim that the emergence of these costs depends on the institutional context, specifically the institutional characteristics of the country's corporate elite circle which is characterized by the elite cohesion and the elite exclusiveness. Our empirical results with a 15-country sample covering the period of 2005 to 2014 provide evidence for the overall existence of a positive performance effect …

Asian Management Insights

A business environment characterised by cloud computing, driverless cars and artificial intelligence has prompted a fundamental shift in the way we think of existing business models. Market sizes have transcended geographic boundaries and New Age firms typically target much larger populations than new firms did a decade ago. Today, meaningful value is derived when a company is an active participant in shaping the environment to one’s own strategic advantage.

Workplace Trust As A Mechanism Of Employee (Dis)Advantage: The Case Of Employee Socioeconomic Status, Marko Pitesa, Stefan Thau, Madan M. Pillutla

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Early work on trust in social science highlighted how the lack of trust between individuals can cause social division, contribute to social stratification, and reduce economic opportunities for people from all social groups. We integrate this work with organizational research on antecedents of trust to generate predictions explaining when and why low employee socioeconomic status (SES) can be a barrier to trust. We discuss how this process can impair the success of both organizations as well as their lower-SES employees. We present a model, and data, suggesting that lower-SES employees will be both more distrusted as well as more distrustful …

Corporate Crisis Advertising: A Framework Examining The Use And Effects Of Corporate Advertising Before And After Crises, Benjamin Ho, Wonsun Shin, Augustine Pang Nov 2017

Corporate Crisis Advertising: A Framework Examining The Use And Effects Of Corporate Advertising Before And After Crises, Benjamin Ho, Wonsun Shin, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

While corporate advertising has been widely studied as a promotional tool, few studies have examined how it can be used in a corporate crisis situation. In 2013, Kim proposed a conceptual framework for examining stakeholders’ evaluation of pre-crisis corporate advertising, using the inoculation and reactance theory. The framework, published in Journal of Marketing Communications, suggested that pre-crisis advertising can increase audience resistance towards negative news of an organization and decrease audience resistance towards future corporate advertisements from the organization. The present study expands on Kim’s work to develop the corporate crisis advertising (CCA) framework. In addition to the inoculation and …

Beyond Personal Control: When And How Executives' Beliefs In Negotiable Fate Foster Entrepreneurial Orientation And Firm Performance, Evelyn W. M. Au, Xin Qin, Zhi-Xue Zhang Nov 2017

Beyond Personal Control: When And How Executives' Beliefs In Negotiable Fate Foster Entrepreneurial Orientation And Firm Performance, Evelyn W. M. Au, Xin Qin, Zhi-Xue Zhang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Negotiable fate, the belief that fate imposes boundaries within which personal actions can shape outcomes, is rooted in Chinese collective wisdom. This belief is hypothesized to prompt executives to use of available resources to create opportunities by directing their attention to controllable aspects of unpredictable environments. Thus, executives' endorsement of negotiable fate beliefs is expected not only to enhance firm-level entrepreneurial orientation, but also to positively predict firm innovation and financial performance. We further expect these mediation effects to be stronger under dynamic environments. Studies of top executives in China support the theorized moderated-mediation model. By providing evidence for its …

“Regarding Lupe”: A One-Act Play Where Two Cultures Collide On The Road To A Latina’S Performance Appraisal, Regina F. Bento, Susan Rawson Zacur

Organization Management Journal

This article presents an original academic play, “Regarding Lupe,” that explores traditional and emerging Latina cultural values and how cross-cultural differences may affect a performance appraisal process. The dramatic structure of the play, inspired by Crandall and Eshleman’s Justification/Suppression Model of Prejudice (JSM), represents a novel and vivid way to engage students in learning why even an acculturated Latina executive may face stereotypes, prejudice, and unintentional discrimination in performance appraisal at work. Here we share the play and offer theoretical and cross-cultural information to facilitate the debriefing. We hope to contribute not only to the teaching and learning of diversity …

The Influence Of Supervisor Undermining On Self-Esteem, Creativity, And Overall Job Performance: A Multiple Mediation Model, Gabi Eissa, Sydney Chinchanachokchai, Rebecca Wyland Oct 2017

The Influence Of Supervisor Undermining On Self-Esteem, Creativity, And Overall Job Performance: A Multiple Mediation Model, Gabi Eissa, Sydney Chinchanachokchai, Rebecca Wyland

Organization Management Journal

Drawing from the supervisor undermining and creativity literature, this study explores the influence of supervisor undermining on employee self-esteem, creative performance, and overall job performance in the workplace. Using data obtained from subordinate–supervisor dyads (N = 123) in various organizations, this study specifically suggests that supervisor undermining adversely impacts employee creativity through the mediation process of employee self-esteem. Additionally, this study finds support for a positive relationship between employee creativity and overall job performance. Ultimately, the current study proposes a multiple mediation model whereby supervisor undermining indirectly influences employee overall job performance through the mediation mechanisms of employee self-esteem and …

Employee Narcissism’S Implications For Performance Management: A Review And Research Directions, Scott David Williams, Jonathan Rountree Williams Oct 2017

Employee Narcissism’S Implications For Performance Management: A Review And Research Directions, Scott David Williams, Jonathan Rountree Williams

Organization Management Journal

The organizational literature reflects a growing interest in the personality trait of grandiose narcissism. Individuals high in grandiose narcissism are more arrogant, self-confident, and greedy, and have lower empathy than the average person. Narcissism injects biases and conflict into the performance management process, which decreases the benefits obtained and increases stress and frustration. We review research on narcissism and the components of performance management systems, and then integrate them to illustrate several important implications for performance management in organizations. Employee narcissism is negatively related to employees’ commitment to development goals that address competence deficits, acceptance of negative feedback, and the …

A Triadic Framework For Collaborative Consumption (Cc): Motives, Activities And Resources & Capabilities Of Actors, Sabine Benoit, Thomas L. Baker, Ruth N. Bolton, Thorsten Gruber, Jay Kandampully

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Collaborative consumption (CC) is an increasingly prevalent form of exchange. CC occurs within a triangle of actors: a platform provider (e.g., Uber), a peer service provider (e.g., an Uber driver) and a customer. The platform provider's main role is matchmaking, so that a customer can access assets of a peer service provider. This paper has three objectives. First, this article identifies three criteria to delineate CC from related constructs such as access-based consumption, sharing or renting. Second, it introduces a literature-based framework explicating the roles of the actors in the CC triangle along three dimensions: motives, activities and resources and …

In contrast to traditional mood repair motivations, we find that people desire to experience negative emotions in response to moral violations. Therefore, people avoid hedonic consumption after negatively valenced moral content, and feel uncomfortable when negatively valenced moral content is followed by hedonic frivolous content in social media contexts
