Effects Of The Covid-19 Crisis On Seafarers And Shipping, Raphael Baumler, María Carrera-Arce, Johan Hollander, Magnus Broström, Karolina Stark
Reports
The report is a testament to the remarkable resilience of the ships and port interface, and the adaptability of port workers and seafarers during the COVID-19 crisis. It also brings to light the vulnerabilities and trends within the sector. The ability of these workers to manage the shockwave ensured that trade flow continued, sustaining the world. However, this period had severe impacts on their livelihoods, starkly highlighting the industry’s inadequate consideration of its human element and the rapid pace of digitalization. The research employed a unique combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore and cross-validate information. This included an …

Policy Innovation As The Cornerstone Of Energy Transition: An Analysis Of Energy Policy In The Shipping Economy And Operations, Peyman Ghaforian Masodzadeh
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
Despite being excluded from most climate change treaties, the maritime sector is expected to manage and reduce carbon emissions in line with global decarbonization goals. Although the IMO's effort has been evident by the adoption of energy regulations and the GHG strategy during the past decade, however, the effectiveness and adequacy of the adopted energy policy remain questionable. This thesis aims to identify problems associated with energy policy in the shipping industry and propose appropriate solutions. Initially, this study was premised on the hypothesis that “energy policy in the shipping industry involves problems associated with policy design, policy implementation, and …

Development Of Sustainable Port Supply Chain Integration In Egypt, Khaled Nasraldin Mohamed Hussein
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
Advances in transportation and communication technology have led to acceleration of globalisation. The introduction of containerisation and multimodalism has triggered the cheaper, faster and safer shipping. Industries became encouraged to offshore their business to best utilise cheap labour and natural resources. Consequently, adoption of new strategies for global sourcing and outsourcing, such as supply management, became inevitable. These globalisation phenomena triggered the need for integrated logistics services and thus more integrated maritime logistics into global supply chains. Port integration into supply chains became a legitimate evolution for development taking place in the global maritime logistics industry. Empirical evidence refers to …

Transport 2040: Truck Platooning: The Australian Case : Technology And Transformation, World Maritime University
Reports
This study details a transport mode, a specific technology option in a specific country. In particular, this study covers truck platooning in road transport, with the focus on Australia. The Transport 2040: Automation, Technology, Employment – The Future of Work Report identified a series of key trends in the context of future transport technologies vis-à-vis transport workers’ employment situation and the wider ramifications on the market. Some of these trends are mode-specific, technology-specific, or specific to a certain geographic location and thus they do not develop in the same manner in all local contexts.
Vehicle automation in the road sector, …

Transport 2040: Autonomous Ships: A New Paradigm For Norwegian Shipping : Technology And Transformation, World Maritime University
Reports
The main section of this study summarizes overall trends and provides a global overview about developments in all four modes of transport. However, as highlighted in its main findings, technology and automation evolves in different ways in different contexts and environments. While in some countries, certain conditions may allow a new technology to find its way to the market, in other countries such a facilitating environment may not exist. Another factor identified is that the mechanisms behind the introduction of technology and automation in transport are complex. By highlighting general trends, as was mainly done in the Transport 2040: Automation, …

Transport 2040 : Automation In Airports: Automatic Baggage Handling Systems : Technology And Transformation, World Maritime University
Reports
An efficient baggage-handling system is of critical importance to the aviation industry, especially for major hub airports that handle large volumes of passengers and connecting flights. Huge investments have been made over the years, and baggage handling has been long recognized as one of the most promising areas for airport automation. However, given the considerable degrees of diversity and dynamic nature of the aviation industry, the levels of automation vary across different airports and regions. Even terminals at the same airport may use very different systems. Institutional factors, such as infrastructure ownership, regulations and airport-airline arrangements, all play important roles …

Transport 2040 : Analysis Of Technical Developments In Transport : Maritime, Air, Rail And Road, World Maritime University
Reports
A number of technical and socio-technical factors are driving the development and adoption of automation. The report, Transport 2040: Automation, Technology, Employment – The Future of Work, provided an overview of the most important trends forecasted to affect the global transport sector by 2040. This current report provides additional details of that assessment. The research conducted is guided by a transport-technology analytical model that provides a structure for a systematic review across different modes of transport. This report reviews, in particular, the transportation technology through the lens of transport vehicles (e.g. ships, trucks, trains, aircraft) and the technical infrastructure that …

Transport 2040: Automation, Technology, Employment : The Future Of Work, World Maritime University
Reports
On 15 January 2019, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the World Maritime University (WMU) launched a flagship report entitled: “Transport 2040: Automation Technology Employment - the Future of Work”. The forward-looking assessment, produced by WMU, investigates how the global transport industry will change as a result of automation and advanced technologies, forecasting and analyzing trends and developments in the major transport sectors - seaborne, road, rail and aviation - to 2040 with an emphasis on the implications for jobs and employment for transport workers.

Prize-winning paper for the 2018 Bureau Internationale des Containers (BIC) essay contest.
"With the increase in global trade, container traffic has increased tremendously in the last two decades. Global container movement has surpassed the 700 million mark (UNCTAD, 2018). This signals a definite milestone for the industry, but it poses a significant threat in terms of commercial viability, safety and security of container related operations. The past year has seen an increase in container related incidents onboard container vessels, ranging from fire, collisions and stability issues. From the complexity that arises thereafter, it is therefore imperative to look at how …

Role Of Private Maritime Security Companies (Pmscs) In Sensitive Shipping Management, Helen Tung
MARENER 2017
The role of Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs) peaked at the height of piracy threats mid 2008. Since then there has been much development of soft guidance from ISO code, BMP4 practice and further discussions of how best to ensure safety in shipping particularly in relation to the high seas. PMSCs work along side important stakeholders in the shipping industry, including the Captain, seafarers, insurers, shipowners, charterers amongst others; what if shipments include sensitive materials? What guidance is there for PMSCs to ensure further safety measures or do the current soft guides provide sufficient guidance. This topic is in line …
