The Kisco Foundation commissioned researchers at the Center for Education Policy and Law and the Caster Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Research at the University of San Diego to work with REBOOT, a nonprofit based in Southern California, to conduct an evaluation of its program, REBOOT WorkshopsTM (REBOOT). REBOOT is a three-week-long program designed to assist members of the military in making the social and career transition from military service to civilian life by “re-booting” their skills, attitudes, and behaviors. Surfers for Cetaceans (S4C) is dedicated to the conservation and protection of marine wildlife, in particular whales and dolphins also known as cetaceans.

The organization’s primary markets are ocean-minded people including surfers, sailors, and divers. S4C also attracts environmental enthusiasts and animal rights activists.

Resources such as funding, volunteers, brand recognition and awareness limit the organization’s ability to execute its mission.

The Alliance for Background Checks in Youth Sports is a coalition of individuals, organizations, government agencies, and community businesses who advocate on the behalf of our communities’ youth and sports programs.

ABC Youth Sports asked California State Legislature to join the ranks of other states in their efforts to protect our children, and our community sports programs. We called for a state-wide policy-- Safe at School, Safe on the Field --requiring all California youth sports league chapters to operate with the same background check requirements held by California public school sports programs.

The team identified three key questions that will be important for the RSFF to address as it positions itself for growth. Those questions are: 1) What is the identity of the RSFF, both internally and externally; 2) How should the RSFF define community; and 3) How should the RSFF define growth?

In creating the bylaws for the Mission Center of HOPE, our team strove to create a document that would not only reflect the nonprofit best practices and ensure compliance with CA law, but that would also provide clear guidance on structure, policies, and procedures. We also worked closely with the organization to ensure that the newly formed board could follow the policies and procedures set forth in the bylaws.

Community Engagement and Collaboration

Casa Cornelia and scores of other public and private agencies rely on interpreters and translators for communicating with immigrants and their communities. Volunteer support overcomes language barriers and ensures that all clients have access to support services in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. Unfortunately, there is often a lack of qualified volunteer interpreters and translators available, most acutely for its Somali clients, which comprise the largest percentage of its Asylum Program’s caseload.

This paper considers possible solutions to the insufficient number of volunteers that are currently available to Casa Cornelia.

JDRF is a volunteer-driven organization with thousands of volunteers in locations worldwide. The survey is the second part of a community impact study of the Masters of Arts in Nonprofit Leadership and Management (NLM) at the University of San Diego.
