Selling Fear Across Ethnic Consumers: Modeling Emotional Arousal And Validating The Impact Of Galvanic Skin Responses In Advertising, Sindy Chapa, Olivia Bravo

AMTP Proceedings 2017

The purpose of this study is to explore how fear-appeal advertising impacts young adults in a multi-ethnic society. This study combines self-reported measures and a skin-galvanic psychological test to measure the impact that fear-appeal advertising has among ethnic groups. Using a one-ad experimental design, results shows significant differences among ethnic groups indicating that the levels of arousal evoked by a “fear-appeal” advertisement were highest across Asian Americans followed by Hispanic American, African-Americans, and then Non-Hispanic Whites. Overall, a proposed model reveals emotions outweigh attitudes toward the ad on the manipulation of fear-appeal advertising.

The Effect Of Advertorial Format And Copy Length On Attitudes Of Female (Target) And Male (Non-Target) Audiences, Cynthia B. Hanson Oct 2016

The Effect Of Advertorial Format And Copy Length On Attitudes Of Female (Target) And Male (Non-Target) Audiences, Cynthia B. Hanson

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This study investigates the effect of the advertorial format and ad copy length on ad and brand attitude. Results of a 2 (advertorial versus non-advertorial) by 2 (light versus moderate copy length) study indicate that the advertorial format generated more favorable ad and brand attitudes for the female (target) subjects, but less favorable attitudes for the male (non-target) subjects. A marginally significant gender by copy length interaction suggests a differential effect of copy length for the male sample, as well: ad and brand attitudes were higher for lighter copy ads for the female sample but lower for the male sample. …

Sports Bettors’ Responses To Sports-Embedded Gambling Promotions: Comparisons Amongst Pgsi Groups, Nerilee Hing, Matthew Lamont, Peter Vitartas, Elian Fink

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Televised sporting events now contain a plethora of gambling and sports betting promotions, including logos, signage, advertising, sponsored segments and celebrity endorsement. This presentation focuses on how sports bettors respond to these promotions, drawing on research findings from Australia.

A first study examined sports bettors’ responses to these promotions, and whether this varied with problem gambling severity. Surveys with 544 Queensland sports bettors indicated that problem gamblers had highest approval of, felt most encouragement to gamble, and had been influenced to gamble most from these promotions, compared to non-problem and at-risk gamblers. Problem gamblers were also more influenced to bet …

The Indulgence And Restraint Cultural Dimension: A Cross-Cultural Study Of Mongolia And The United States, Rentsenkhand Enkh-Amgalan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This research focuses on one of the least studied cultural dimension, “indulgence versus restraint” (IVR) and how it affects consumer behavior, international marketing, and global business operations in the U.S. and Mongolia. This project is the first research on IVR in Mongolia since the country is rarely studied and there is no available data for this cultural dimension. Samples of undergraduate business students (as consumers) from both countries were studied through surveys. The findings support that Mongolians and Americans are different regarding the “indulgence” cultural dimension. This paper has a significant contribution to the cross-cultural literature regarding the indulgence cultural …

Digitization, globalization and demographic shifts are requiring us to replace old models of thinking about communication and advertising. The chapter introduces new models of thinking about about the future of advertising, guided by a few fundamental principles: delivering utilities and services, as opposed to a message; reaggregating audiences, as opposed to segmenting them; …

Analyzing The Effect Of Advertising On Hospital Choice And Selection: Advancing A New Truth For Hospital Selection And Its Implication For Other Service Providers, Michael A. Petrochuk, Trish Berg

Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings

Consumerism has long-been an important driver in other industries across the globe, as industries have embraced the importance of meeting customer and consumer expectations (Bennett and Mandell, 1969; Oliver, 1980; Bolton and Drew, 1991; Peyrot, Cooper, and Schnapf, 1993; Taylor and Cronin, 1994). Firms have attempted to understand consumer expectations prior to the delivery of service or product purchase.

Within the last ten years, this consumerism movement has infiltrated into the field of global health care (Herzlinger, 2002; Grazman, & Leifer, 2007). Tenets of the consumer-driven health care include increased demands for high performance, flawless quality, data analytics to support …

Impact Of Death-Related Television Programming On Advertising Evaluation, Priyamvadha Rangan, Surendra N. Singh, Mark J. Landau, Jungsil Choi Sep 2015

Impact Of Death-Related Television Programming On Advertising Evaluation, Priyamvadha Rangan, Surendra N. Singh, Mark J. Landau, Jungsil Choi

Business Faculty Publications

Programming that depicts or implies death constitutes a vital component of daily television broadcasts, yet the impact of such programming on the evaluation of embedded advertising remains unexplored. Using terror management theory, we propose that exposure to routine and commonplace death-related television programming will lead to the differential evaluation of ensuing advertisements depending on whether they are perceived to be of domestic or foreign origin, and that this effect is contingent on the nature of the death-related cognitions at play at the time of ad exposure. Further, the death-related program context effects on embedded advertising are unique—ads at the end, …

The Conceptualization And Development Of Advertisement-Evoked Imagination Scale, Ike Janita Dewi, Swee-Hoon Ang

Asia Marketing Journal

This research aims to understand consumers’ imagination as a subjective experience which can be evoked by marketing stimuli. The characteristics and types of imagination are identified, upon which an imagination scale was developed. Results of the scale development suggest that there are four imagination types, namely, benefit-anticipatory imagination, emotional-bonding imagination, symbolic imagination, and mind-wandering imagination. The scale demonstrated reliability, as well stability for application across product types. The scale development also includes discussion on imagination-related but distinctive concepts of product symbolism and tendency to imagine.

This study explains the economics of billboard advertising, specifically pertaining to the internal and external elements that make them effective for both consumers and the brand. After analyzing secondary articles and studies, primary research was conducted by interviewing a sample of consumers and experts to determine …

Does Thin Always Sell? The Moderating Role Of Thin Ideal Internalization On Advertising Effectiveness, James A. Roberts, Chloe' A. Roberts

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Much of the current focus on the use of ultra-thin models in fashion magazines can be attributed to Madison Avenue which still operates under a “Thin Sells” ethos. Research to date, however, has provided equivocal evidence of the efficacy of thin models in advertising (Yu 2014). The present study’s two related objectives include: (1) determining whether model size has an impact on advertising effectiveness, and (2) if internalization of the thin ideal moderates this relationship. Study results suggest model size in fashion advertisements has no main effect on advertising effectiveness. Additionally, thin ideal internalization moderates the model size – advertising …

Beneath The Kiss: Unearthing The Ideological Underpinnings Of Kay Jewelers Advertisements, Chelsea Nedlyn Hill

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Advertising is a frequently used influential and persuasive means of communication, such as Kay Jewelers, a corporation whose advertising methods have been superficially appealing to a female audience. However, this study sought to investigate the ideological underpinnings associated with Kay Jewelers advertisements, employing an ideological criticism to argue through feminist theory that Kay Jewelers utilizes key elements of heteronormative love as a means to persuade and influence men to purchase their jewelry products. Through this underpinning of heteronormative romance, Kay Jewelers emphasizes the notion that an artifact, like a piece of jewelry, is necessary in order to properly express …

The Franchisor/Franchisee Relationship: The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Perceived Franchisor Support, Mary Kay Rickard Nov 2014

The Franchisor/Franchisee Relationship: The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Perceived Franchisor Support, Mary Kay Rickard

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects

Franchising is an organizational system that provides the franchisor with needed capital for expansion and the franchisee with expertise and knowledge to operate a local outlet (Windenhausen & Joyce 1977). It is, therefore, one of the approaches firms are turning to in order to increase their business. Franchising is more complex than a traditional business relationship because it is legally binding (Bernstein 2004). Moreover, the complexity of this relationship warrants a closer look from the perspective of the franchisee since it is the franchisees’ perception of the work environment which has an effect on their motivation and satisfaction with the …

Consumer Locus Of Control As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Mood And Consumers` Likelihood To Purchase, Felix Septianto, Minghao Huang, Jaeseok Jeong Jul 2014

Consumer Locus Of Control As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Mood And Consumers` Likelihood To Purchase, Felix Septianto, Minghao Huang, Jaeseok Jeong

Asia Marketing Journal

Although previous works have established that mood can considerably influence consumer behavior (Vohs et al. 2007), they provided inconsistent results (Cohen et al. 2008). In particular, previous works only examined the willingness of consumers to regulate their mood and implicitly assumed that consumers have the control to regulate their mood states. Thus, this research intends to fill the current gap in the extant literatures by investigating whether consumer locus of control (CLOC) can act as a moderator for mood effects on consumers` likelihood to purchase. In an experiment, participants` CLOC was initially measured. Afterwards, they watched different video clips to …

Creating Consumuments: The Use Of Artistic Interpretation Of Text As An Insight Mining Device In Advertising Courses, Tracy Tuten

Atlantic Marketing Journal

The goal of any approach used to gain a foundation of knowledge about a consumer segment is to ensure one can make decisions that are sound strategically and effectively serve the segment. This paper describes a new technique for profiling a consumer segment: creating a consumument. A consumument is an artistic interpretation of text which reflects insight into a consumer segment. The exercise, based on Tom Phillips’ (2005) A Humument, seeks to encourage students to mine for meaning, reflect on consumer perceptions, emotions, and aspirations, and ultimately express their understanding of a consumer group artistically.

This study considers the level of involvement of participants viewing bilingual and English language TV commercials. It analyzes results from 295 non-Hispanic participants studying at a Midwestern university. In the study, participants were asked to view four commercials. Using Zaichkowsky's (1994) 10-item Personal Involvement Inventory (PII), participants scaled the advertisements on a 7-level scale. The scale evaluated participants' emotional and cognitive involvement with the ad. This between-subjects design required that participants be randomly separated into viewing all-English or all-bilingual advertisements. Findings showed no significant difference in involvement levels between bilingual or English commercials within this demographic group. Those with higher …

Selling Life To Abortion-Seekers: A Content Analysis Of Passive And Active Persuasion In Crisis Pregnancy Center Marketing, Alexander Kocman

Masters Theses

For supporters of the pro-life cause, crisis pregnancy centers (or CPC's) have become the "darlings of the movement," according to the New York Times (Belluck, 2013), offering women with unplanned pregnancies free advice, information, classes, childcare, and needed supplies. For abortion advocates, such establishments are intended to seduce vulnerable abortion-seekers into a situation where they will be counseled out of an abortion and possibly even proselytized. Yet for as much controversy as exists in the news media, medical community, and legal realm about CPC's, there is an unsettling lack of understanding of how--and why--CPC's market themselves the way they do. …

The ability of consumer judges to identify sustainable messages in environmental advertising and the effect of these messages is explored. A content analysis provides insight into these judges’ perceptions of the depth of environmental advertising messages. An experiment investigates the influence of sustainable messages and includes collection of cognitive response data to evaluate the cognitive dimension of sustainability messages. Content analysis results suggest that sustainability messages may influence how environmental advertisements are perceived. These findings are supported by the cognitive response data, which shows cognitive differences across advertisements, and the experimental manipulation that suggests sustainable ads may be more involving …
