The benefits of physical activity are well documented and improve all aspects of health and overall wellbeing. Globally, on average, 37.1% of women are insufficiently physically active while only 23.4% of men are; this trend is also found in Utah, where 19.4% of women are insufficiently physically active while only 17.6% of men are. While women often live longer than men, they are frequently in worse health. Physical inactivity contributes to the development and severity of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. In addition to affecting physical health, physical inactivity is also associated with poor mental health. Physical …

Retail Employees’ Ethical Value And Climate On Multidimensional Job Satisfaction: A Comparative Study With B2b Employees, Hyowon Hyun, Jungkun Park, Jihwan Yum, Sangwoo Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
In the retail industry, managing companies’ ethical environments is critical because it is associated with employee satisfaction and performance. Despite the increasing demand to understand the role of salespersons’ ethical climate and value on behavior, only a few studies have focused on this connection. Furthermore, the relative impact of ethical issues (e.g., ethical value and ethical climate) on multidimensional job satisfaction in B2B and B2C sectors remains unexplored. Thus, this study 1) explores the impact of ethical issues (e.g., ethical value and ethical climate) on multi-dimensions of job satisfaction (e.g., satisfaction with management, supervisor, co-workers, and customers) and 2) compares …

How Does Global-Local Identity Impact Consumer Decision-Making, Xiaodong Nie
Marketing Dissertations - Archive
Globalization has exacerbated the birth of the sharing economy on a global scale, and it has made global–local identity essential in understanding consumer decisions. For example, an emerging literature has uncovered the effects of global–local identity on various consumer responses, including price sensitivity, preference for local/global products and brands, preference for eco-friendly products, and a tendency to use price as a signal of product quality. Extending the literature, this dissertation aims to advance the understandings of the effect of global-local identity on various consumer behavior. Specifically, in the first essay, consumers face the decision as to whether to choose a …

The Impact Of Consumers Price Level Perception On Emotions Towards Supermarkets, Abdulcelil Cakici, Sena Tekeli
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
Although cognition and emotion have been regarded as opposing concepts, recent studies have shown that they are closely connected to each other. Consumers’ purchasing decisions depend on the emotions evoked by their price perceptions rather than the actual price of the products or services. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find out the effects of price perception level on emotions towards supermarkets. Based on the literature review, Cognitive Appraisal Theory was adapted including price level perceptions- perceived expensiveness and perceived cheapness- and emotions- negative and positive- towards supermarkets. Data were collected through a questionnaire in Mersin’s (Turkey) central …

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
This study provides a theoretical framework to assess the combined effect that traffic stream and music could have on consumers’ shopping behavior throughout their journey to the stores. Through the Virtual Reality (VR) simulation of a car journey, two traffic conditions (light/heavy) and two types of music (relaxing/energizing) were tested, evaluating the effects on the time spent during shopping and on consumption choices (in terms of expense, number of items purchased). Moreover, participants’ physiological reactions have been analyzed by measuring their heartbeat variation (ΔHR). The results indicate that regardless of the type of music listened, heavy traffic leads consumers to …

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
This study investigates the relationship between materialism and social consumption motivation in the context of Covid-19 based on terror management theory. University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
The global tourism economy has created a competitive industry, and the customer experience in destination branding has emerged as a competitive tool for practitioners. It has also been attracting attention in the tourism literature. Individuals who experience high degrees of flow tend to feel more engaged in activities during their travel experiences. However, the antecedents of the flow experience and its outcomes are still limited in the literature. Considering the gaps in the literature, this study is aimed at developing a conceptual model for the mediating effect of the flow experience on the relationship between destination brand experience and destination …

Social Media Framework For Businesses, Nawel Amrouche
Social Media Framework For Businesses, Nawel Amrouche
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
Social media is gaining popularity and many studies are investigating the topic by providing contradictory conclusions about its effectiveness. To scrutinize this incongruence, we first differentiate social media from other communication tools and describe its challenges. Next, based on an extensive literature review collecting research papers from 2004 to 2016, we propose a structural framework explaining the role of managerial, individual, and contextual variables that affect the social media value chain. We find that social media has a controversial effect on businesses’ objectives depending on the context of studies. We also find that social media’s objectives could be classified into …

Brand New Leisure Constraint: Covid-19, Guliz Coskun
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
The recent pandemic caused serious losses in the leisure industry worldwide. The recreation facilities and event management companies have suffered the negative economic impact of the pandemic, and some of them even went bankrupt. Due to facility closures and lockdowns people have no choice to spend their leisure time at home and engage in home-based leisure activities. The leisure time activity participation was already low among Turkish people before the pandemic. The fear of getting infected with COVID-19 led people to stay at home even during the summer times when the lockdown was paused. Families have to spend more time …

Accelerated Modernity: What Are The Social Media Stories Undergraduate Students Engage With?, Pericles A. Rospigliosi, Sebastian Raza-Mejia
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
This paper aims to show how current undergraduate students use social media in their daily lives, taking the first ten minutes of the day as a concentrated insight into their priorities of practice. The work draws on primary data from four focus groups of UK business students in higher education. Through the application of Rosa’s construct of social acceleration, initial findings indicate a hierarchy of priorities, shaped by economic, cultural and structural drivers in what social media is engaged with, in what sequence, and for what purpose. These choices reflect acceleration in the changes to the technology, the pace of …

How Learning Style Interacts With Voice-Assisted Technology (Vat) In Consumer Task Evaluation, Bonnie Canziani, Sara Macsween
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
This study explored the idea that consumer learning styles are relevant to the integration of voice-assisted technology (VAT) into consumer products and services. Visual learners found the use of VAT moderately easy when performing simple tasks such playing music, asking about the weather, and asking questions. Auditory learners exhibited stronger sentiment scores as well as willingness to use VAT for tasks that are more complex. Practitioners should focus on improvements in other aspects of modality to strengthen visual learners’ involvement with VAT devices. Auditory learners are best supported through the design of niche products and services that are differentiated by …
Does Political Orientation Affect The Evaluation Of Artificial Intelligence?, Haejoo Han, Sujin Park, Kyoungmi Lee
Does Political Orientation Affect The Evaluation Of Artificial Intelligence?, Haejoo Han, Sujin Park, Kyoungmi Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
In this study, we propose that political orientation is related to the evaluation of artificial intelligence. Using AI-based medical and legal service providers, we find that the more politically conservative consumers are, the more likely they are to have a lower evaluation of AI-based professional services. Furthermore, we find that the relationship between political conservatism and the evaluation of AI-based services is driven by the extent of the perceived threat that AI poses to human uniqueness. Other potential underlying factors such as the heightened need for control, gender, socioeconomic status, or technology familiarity do not explain this effect.
The Effect Of Adding Novel Attributes To Hedonic Vs. Utilitarian Base: Role Of Holistic Vs. Analytic Thinking Style, Juyon Lee, Wujin Chu
The Effect Of Adding Novel Attributes To Hedonic Vs. Utilitarian Base: Role Of Holistic Vs. Analytic Thinking Style, Juyon Lee, Wujin Chu
Asia Marketing Journal
Combining theories of the goal-derived product evaluation and holistic versus analytic thinking style, the authors investigate the effects of adding novel attributes on new product evaluation. While one may predict that adding novel attributes may be appealing to consumers as it provides new benefits, the authors propose that, in some cases, it may not. The current research investigates consumers’ view of new attribute addition depends on the novel attribute’s goal congruence with the consumption goals of the base product, which may be hedonic or utilitarian in nature. Further, consumers’ holistic versus analytic thinking style moderates the effect of such goal …
Configurational Paths To Generating Knowledge Benefit Through Customer Participation, Woojung Chang
Configurational Paths To Generating Knowledge Benefit Through Customer Participation, Woojung Chang
Asia Marketing Journal
Involving customers in the new product development process has been found to create knowledge benefit for the firm. However, the different roads leading to a firm’s knowledge benefit through configurations of which new product development stage customers are engaged in, a firm’s internal co-creation-related capabilities, and the external environment have yet to be specified. To explore the alternative configurational paths to generating knowledge benefit through customer participation, a state-of-the-art fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis is applied to a sample of 181 new product development projects. The results reveal six different configurations to generate knowledge benefit in the new product development …
A Comparison Of Implicit And Explicit Error Detection And Their Effects On Purchase Intention And Judgments Of Quality, Rachel Fernandes
A Comparison Of Implicit And Explicit Error Detection And Their Effects On Purchase Intention And Judgments Of Quality, Rachel Fernandes
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In an online study of purchase intent based on Chinese menu inspection, explicitly noticing grammatical errors by hotspot click was more detrimental to judgments of quality than implicit detection by error estimation. When they estimated errors in a survey question (ordinal measure), participants who reported many (more than nine) errors had lower purchase intent and ratings of quality compared to those with few (about six) or no errors. However, with the more novel, continuous measure based on hotspot detection, participant purchase intent did not decrease as the number of errors noticed increased. Importantly, there were no differences between the hotspot …
