The Walt Disney Company: A Corporate Strategy Analysis, Carlos Carillo, Jeremy Crumley, Kendree Thieringer, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Robins Case Network

Walt Disney is a completely integrated media powerhouse. Films provide material for theme parks and resorts, consumer products, and even a cruise ship. Network and cable broadcasting is also a part of the integrated Disney package. None of Disney’s competitors are as successfully integrated. Still, in spite of a long record of success, Disney is facing more competition on many fronts and, like other media and entertainment companies, must continue to adapt to a changing technological and social environment.

Common Practices In Destination Website Design, Cuauhtémoc Luna-Nevarez, Michael R. Hyman

WCBT Faculty Publications

The Internet has become a key marketing channel for tourist destinations. To identify typical features of destination websites, a content analysis of websites for top global destinations—by number of international arrivals—was conducted. Six factors were evaluated: primary focus, navigation and interactivity, visual and presentation style, textual information, use of advertising, and use of social media and travel aids. In addition, a cluster analysis was conducted to identify homogeneous groups of websites in the sample. The findings revealed three naturally occurring groups. Inter-cluster differences suggest that DMOs use different approaches to target potential visitors, as evidenced by websites ranging from purely …

What Brings You Pleasure? The Role Of Desire Within The Development Of Compulsive Purchasing, Justine Rapp

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This paper seeks to put forth two major contributions into marketing scholarship: (1) the role of desire within the development of compulsivity from impulsive consumptions, and (2) an assessment of compulsivity measurement scales. A mixed method design provides for both statistical and qualitative support for both contributions, for a deeper and replicated account of consumer behavior within the marketplace. First, we develop a possible path for the development of compulsivity, explaining impulsivity as an antecedent with consumer shopping desire as the driving factor. With this, we introduce the variable Consumer Shopping Desire as a quantified construct related to Belk et …

A Case Study Of Shinsegae E-Mart, Chung K Kim, Mi Na Jun, Jeong Soo Han, Kim, Jun Gung Park, Joshua Y Kim

Asia Marketing Journal

The success story of E-mart fascinated many academics and practitioners alike. Though E-mart began as a nameless discount store in Chang-dong, Seoul in 1993, it has transformed itself into a leading distribution company and one of the most powerful brands in Korea. Surprisingly, it achieved the great success against the two crises it met: the national economic crisis and the invasion of the global giant Walmart. The main objective of this case study is to formally examine how E-mart overcame the two crises. More specifically, this case study highlights the ways with which E-mart turned those difficulties into opportunities for …

Why Genuine Luxury Brands Are Consumed? Counterfeits? Examining Consumer Identification, Hyun Suk Suh Oct 2012

Why Genuine Luxury Brands Are Consumed? Counterfeits? Examining Consumer Identification, Hyun Suk Suh

Asia Marketing Journal

Owing to increased number of luxury brand users, both genuine and counterfeit luxury product consumption continues to increase every year. Luxury brand is defined as use or display of a particular branded products which brings the ownership prestige apart from its functional utility(Grossmand and Shapiro 1988). Some luxury brands have imitations sold in marketplace due to their popularity. These imitations or counterfeits have been jumping on the bandwagon of the upturn in sales of their originals. The purpose of our study is to understand consumer`s underlying motives to consume luxury brands, genuine and or counterfeits. To do this, we propose …

The Effects Of Hot Temperature On Impulsive Behaviors, Hee Kyung Ahn Oct 2012

The Effects Of Hot Temperature On Impulsive Behaviors, Hee Kyung Ahn

Asia Marketing Journal

Temperature and weather are all around us, quite literally. Furthermore, temperature and weather not only permeate our atmosphere, constantly affecting our visceral states of warmth and coldness, but they metaphorically permeate our language. People, products, and ideas can all be “hot” or “cold.” Given this ubiquity, it is perhaps surprising that relatively little research has systematically examined the influence of temperature on choice and judgment. Temperature-related words such as “hot” and “cold” are often used to describe impulsive and calculated behaviors, respectively. These metaphoric connotations of thermal concepts raise the question as to whether temperature, psychological states and decision making …

Caffe Bene: Creating Values For Customers, Kwang Ho Ahn, Chang Jo Yoo, Young Chan Kim

Asia Marketing Journal

Caffe Bene, one of the most notable coffeehouse chain brands in Republic of Korea, gives us some thought-provoking issues in terms of sustainable success. Despite harsh competition among various coffeehouse brands, Caffe Bene has been accomplished astonishing outcomes in domestic market and now ranked 2nd place in sales among the global coffeehouse franchise in 2010 and 2011. These achievements were possible mainly because Caffe Bene adopted distinctive shop design, maintained aggressive marketing strategy, developed new menu, and combined the unique Korean culture with ordinary concept of cafe to make its place attractive. However, since Korean coffeehouse market is getting saturated …

Optional Tariffs For Channel Coordination, Jae Do Song Oct 2012

Optional Tariffs For Channel Coordination, Jae Do Song

Asia Marketing Journal

When a channel is vertically separated, there can be inefficiencies, double marginalization. Channel coordination to amend this inefficiency has been an important issue in marketing and economics. Channel coordination deals with maximization of joint profit and achieving proper profit sharing among participants. In this paper, a manufacturer and heterogeneous multiple retailers with exclusive territory are assumed, and channel coordination with two-part tariff is considered. When multiple heterogeneous retailers are assumed, profit sharing can be an issue even though the tariffs based on marginal cost can maximize joint profit. In case of multiple heterogeneous retailers, the manufacturer earns the same profit …

Music As A Magical Cue, In Suk Hwang, Eugene J S Won, Sook Eun Byun

Although music is one of the most important attributes of broadcasting communications, few studies have examined the relationship between background music and the behavior of audiences, particularly in the context of TV home shopping programs, where purchase decisions are made while watching the show. The objective of this study is to examine whether certain characteristics of music in broadcasting communications can affect the audiences` purchase intentions or behaviors. Unlike previous studies on this issue, this study considers the impulse-inducing capability (IIC) of music as an important variable affecting consumers` purchase intension. A 2x3 (high/low involvement and high/low/no IIC music) between …

Reducing Unlawful Prescription Drug Promotion: Is The Public Health Being Served By An Enforcement Approach That Focuses On Punishment?, Vicki W. Girard

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Despite the imposition of increasingly substantial fines and recently successful efforts to impose individual liability on corporate executives under the Park doctrine, punishing pharmaceutical companies and their executives for unlawful promotional activities has not been as successful in achieving compliance with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) as the protection of the public health demands. Over the past decade, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have shifted their focus from correction and compliance to a more punitive model when it comes to allegedly unlawful promotion of pharmaceuticals. The shift initially focused …

Sunvelope: A Nevada Company Revolutionizes Solar Hot Water Collectors, Nevada Institute For Renewable Energy Commercialization (Nirec)

Nevada Newsflash

Solar hot water is just not sexy to the general public—and that’s created a challenge for Pete Mokler, director of marketing at Sunvelope Solar. “Our technology can deliver more energy units per dollar invested—whether counted in therms, BTUs, or kilowatt hours—than photovoltaic, wind, geothermal and biomass,” says Mokler, “but you say ‘solar hot water’ and people yawn.”

Cooperative-Experiential Learning: Using Student-Developed Games To Increase Knowledge Retention, Kerri M. Camp, Sherry Avery, Roger Lirely

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Previous literature has discussed the use of cooperative and experiential learning as a means of augmenting the student involvement in the learning process. Teamwork has been one method of employing cooperative learning and having students play games has been used extensively in experiential learning approaches. Often the two pedagogies are employed simultaneously by having students teams participate in games. This research combines the cooperative and experiential learning approaches by involving student teams in designing the games that other students will play with the goal of increasing student retention of knowledge. The sample included consumer behavior and integrated marketing communications students …

Control And Fairness In Customer Service, Odile J. Streed, Albert Kagan Oct 2012

Control And Fairness In Customer Service, Odile J. Streed, Albert Kagan

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Using the concept of “role theories”, the notions of fairness, freedom versus control, and psychological reactance this article examines how these human factors interact in quick service restaurant (QSR) encounters. This research measures the degree of improvement in customer satisfaction as choices offered to customers, employees’ involvement and speed of delivery, vary. Compensatory effects between control and fairness indicate that QSR chains with a strong tradition of control could introduce fairness attributes into the service encounter and increase customer satisfaction without substantially changing existing operating processes. Traditional QSR models may improve competitiveness and strengthen brand image by developing a stronger …

Psychographic Segmentation In A Unique Service Industry: A Typology Based On Consumers’ Levels Of Consumption Of Live And Media-Based Spectator Sports, Tammy Mccullough, Sam Fullerton

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The purposes of this study were twofold. First a typology for the categorization of consumers of spectator sports based solely upon their levels of consumption as members of both the live and the media-based audiences was developed. The four segments were given names based upon the individuals’ levels of consumption as members of both of the two alternative audiences. Specifically, the resulting segments comprised the sports-immersed fans, venue-based enthusiasts, media-based fans, and sports contrarians. Subjects also responded to a set of 34 sports-oriented psychographic statements which allowed for lifestyle-based profiles to be developed for each of the four designated segments. …

Branding Lazos De Amor: Importance And Challenges Of Branding Small Non-Profits, The Journey Towards A Better Brand., Sugey Terrero

Capstone Collection

Branding is an integral journey that precedes, includes and surpasses any marketing and advertising effort; it entails an internal process of self-discovery, combined with the exportation (marketing) of organizational values through visual and tangible means (advertising). This capstone focused on the following questions: why is branding important for non-profits? What factors contribute to non-profits not focusing on branding? In addition, what strategies can small non-profits use to develop and manage their brand more effectively? The first question was explored through literature, while the second was explored both theoretically and empirically beginning with an analysis of why branding is a challenging …

Social Media Helps Small Businesses, Nicholas J. Oxborrow Oct 2012

Social Media Helps Small Businesses, Nicholas J. Oxborrow

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Beemer and Shook (2009) explain that developing customers one at a time is the only way. There are no short cuts to this. Traditionally, a small business would develop their relationships by going from door-to-door to raise awareness and grow their brand. How fast they achieved this depended on the budget and time available to their business. Traditionally, large businesses had the power of reaching their markets through huge advertising budget, which small companies could not match.

In today’s business environment, social media has become a new marketing tool that is available to all businesses, that instantly develops relationships with …

Sustainable Tourism Marketing Strategies At Unesco World Heritage Sites, Fouad A. Sadiki

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Designation as a United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage site has a significant impact on the tourism development and sustainability of a site, city, region or country. World Heritage sites bring a certain level of prestige and international recognition, but they also have an impact on the local communities as they impact day to day life and rituals of the residents. Several paradigms exist in evaluating the success of a UNESCO World Heritage site. This paper specifically examines how marketing strategies bolster sustainable tourism efforts.

The Role Of Customer Loyalty To The Salesperson In Generating Premium Revenue For Retailers, Ronald A. Clark, James J. Zboja, Clay M. Voorhees Oct 2012

The Role Of Customer Loyalty To The Salesperson In Generating Premium Revenue For Retailers, Ronald A. Clark, James J. Zboja, Clay M. Voorhees

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The findings of this research underscore the relative importance of loyalty to the salesperson, when compared with retailer trust and satisfaction, on outcomes such as loyalty to the retailer and a consumer’s willingness to pay price premiums. This research also demonstrates that loyalty to the salesperson has a diminished effect on both outcomes when the merchandise is perceived as being high quality. The findings suggest that managers need to be aware of potential contingency factors that may affect relationships within the service profit chain. Moreover, the results reveal that consumers make holistic evaluations of services and consider both the physical …

Customer Complaint Handling: The Importance Of Employee Training For Customer Service, Nader Shooshtari, Shawn Clouse, Simona Stan

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Providing superior customer service and having effective and efficient customer complaint handling procedures are critical to a firm’s success in the marketplace. This paper reports on a survey of Chamber of Commerce members in a community with a population of about 65,000 people with regard to their customer complaint handling policies and practices. The findings indicate that firms which train customer service employees in customer complaint handling are likely to collect, record, and respond to customer feedback and complaints in a more systematic way than those firms which do not provide such training. These firms are also more likely to …

An Empirical Taxonomy Of Tourist Information Search Strategies, Stephen W. Clopton, James E. Stoddard, Mike R. Evans Oct 2012

An Empirical Taxonomy Of Tourist Information Search Strategies, Stephen W. Clopton, James E. Stoddard, Mike R. Evans

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

An empirical taxonomy of tourists’ information search strategies is developed based on a survey of a large sample of tourists. The taxonomy reveals five different information search strategies. Each search strategy consists of the combination of individual information sources used by tourists in pre-trip planning. The five information search strategies are related to select tourist demographic characteristics, trip activities, accommodation choices, and general media preferences. The results indicate a multivariate relationship between tourist demographics and information search strategies. Furthermore, information search strategies are related to tourists’ preferred trip activities and choice of accommodations. Implications of the taxonomy for tourism marketing …
