Emotional Brand Attachment: Marketing Strategies For Successful Generation, Katie Bilotti

Modern society is structured around consumption. The climate of the current consumer culture is one of intense competition. In order to differentiate their brands and products, companies are beginning to focus on differentiating their brands on the basis of distinctive emotional, rather than functional, characteristics. Emotional brand attachment is defined as the bond that connects a consumer with a specific brand by involving feelings of affection, passion, and connection. When established, emotional brand attachment is a powerful tool for building brand equity and influencing the purchasing decisions of consumers. This paper explores the marketing tactics utilized by Dove brand and …

Framing The Flu, Jennifer Lynn Mcmillen Jan 2011

Framing The Flu, Jennifer Lynn Mcmillen

Marketing Dissertations - Archive

Since Tversky and Kahneman's article on prospect theory in 1979, there have been many articles published on framing with mixed success in finding preference shifts and in which frame subjects are most persuaded. Framing has been a source of much research and debate in extant literature, regarding whether the effect even exists and if it does, what accentuates or mitigates the effects found. Using the flu as the context, this article incorporates sad versus happy moods and emotional versus rational appeals to highlight when the most persuasive frame changes and to provide practitioners a more complete picture on the most …

Constructing And Disciplining The Working Body: Organisational Discourses, Globalisation And The Mobile Worker, Marian Crowley-Henry, Paul Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

We consider the ethical treatment of people working in organizations along the relativism/absolutism continuum. Work is a dominant activity in people’s lives and a core part of people’s identities. In it is the managerial realm of Human Resource Management where the focus on the working body primarily resides. The construction and disciplining of the working body is theoretically and empirically explored in this chapter. Do organizations construct and discipline their workforce as a means to their organizational ends (as resources), or do they treat them as means in themselves (as humans)? We trace organizational discourses that emphasize resources rather than …

The Diffusion Of Microgeneration Technologies.: Assessing The Influence Of Perceived Product Characteristics On Home Owners’ Willingness To Pay, Marius Claudy, Claus Michelsen, Aidan O'Driscoll Jan 2011

The Diffusion Of Microgeneration Technologies.: Assessing The Influence Of Perceived Product Characteristics On Home Owners’ Willingness To Pay, Marius Claudy, Claus Michelsen, Aidan O'Driscoll

Articles

This study presents empirical insight into willingness to pay (WTP) for microgeneration technologies and the relative influence of subjective consumer perceptions. First, we apply a double-bounded-contingent valuation method to elicit Irish home owners’ willingness to pay for micro wind turbines, wood pellet boilers, solar panels and solar water heaters. Utilizing findings from the adoption of innovation literature, in a second step, we assess the influence of different antecedents on WTP for each of the four technologies, including (1) home owners’ perception of product characteristics, (2) normative influences, and (3) socio demographic characteristics. Our results show that WTP varies significantly between …

Decision conflicts in consumer decision making occur when product attributes are negatively correlated and consumers perceive the alternatives as having different advantages and disadvantages. Consumers may resort to some kind of avoidance choice behavior in order to attenuate the negative emotions frequently connected with such conflicts. In this research, the attraction effect is tested in the Northern part of Mexico. The results show that despite cultural differences between Mexico and the United States, the attraction effect occurred in a sample of educated, younger university students in Mexico. However, whereas the attraction effect occurred in a setting based on product choices, …

Toward A Computer-Scored Assessment Of Marketing Expertise, Donald R. Bacon, Tia M. Quinlan-Wilder

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

In this paper, case-based measures of marketing expertise, a construct perhaps similar to critical thinking, are developed. The measures only achieved modest reliability. In a pre-post design, there was some evidence that students improved in marketing expertise during the quarter, but the effect is probably small, indicated that repeated training would likely be necessary to achieve more substantial learning gains.

Does An Academy Award Affect Stock Return?, Kelli M. Maltsbarger

CMC Senior Theses

This study examines the affect of winning an Academy Award on the stock price of parent companies.  On average, receiving an Oscar has no significant impact on the stock of parent companies during the few days surrounding the broadcast of the Academy Awards.  The findings of this study introduce questions of external interference and possible limitations on this type of research.  However, my study sheds light on future topics of investigation for analyzing the effects of televised award shows on the stock market.

Do Green Lifestyle Consumers Appreciate Low Involvement Green Products?, Bela Florenthal, Priscilla Arling Jan 2011

Do Green Lifestyle Consumers Appreciate Low Involvement Green Products?, Bela Florenthal, Priscilla Arling

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Green products have become popular and have been targeted toward consumers who lead green lifestyles. Still, some green products are assumed to be more appealing to this group than others, sometimes based on level of involvement. This study tests a low involvement green product in terms of being appealing to consumers with green lifestyles. A theoretical model was developed and tested using a structural equation model. Results indicate that consumers with green lifestyles do value green attributes of low involvement products, in terms of consumer’s attitudes and behavioral intentions. These results imply that companies with green low involvement products should …

The Prevalence And Influence Of The Combination Of Humor And Violence In Super Bowl Commercials, Benjamin J. Blackford, James W. Gentry, Robert L. Harrison, Les Carlson Jan 2011

The Prevalence And Influence Of The Combination Of Humor And Violence In Super Bowl Commercials, Benjamin J. Blackford, James W. Gentry, Robert L. Harrison, Les Carlson

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

The growing concern over violence in the media has led to vast amounts of research examining the effects of violent media on viewers. An important subset of this research looks at how humor affects this relationship. While research has considered this subset in television programming, almost no research has explored this in the context of advertising. This paper builds on the little research that exists by examining the effects of combining humor and violence, as well as the theoretical approaches that underlie these effects. A content analysis is conducted to identify the prevalence of violence, humor, and the combination of …

The first essay identifies several factors that influence the financial rewards of this media-placement strategy. Specifically, I examine the impact of each ad's featured characters and appeals, and the product benefits promoted, on abnormal stock returns for sponsoring companies that appear in Super Bowl ads. Event study results show that Super Bowl advertising from 2004 to 2008 is positively related to abnormal stock returns for advertisers. Cross-sectional regression analyses indicate that market value of Super Bowl advertisers is positively related to likeable characters, emotional appeals, and approach …

Circus: An Integrated Curriculum Unit, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver

Ricks Curriculum Units Series

An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. An integrated-thematic curriculum permits students to be active participants in their own learning as they design their own explorations and take …

The use of mobile applications, defined as small programs that run on a mobile device and perform tasks ranging from banking to gaming and web browsing, is exploding. Within the past two years, the industry has grown from essentially nothing to a $2 billion marketplace, but adoption rates are still on the rise. Using network theory, this study examines how the adoption of mobile apps among young consumers is influenced by others in their social network. The results suggest that the likelihood of adoption and usage of mobile apps increases with their use by the consumer's strongest relationship partner. In …

Customer Loyalty, Repurchase And Satisfaction: A Meta-Analytical Review, Tamilla Curtis, Russell Abratt, Dawna L. Rhoades, Paul Dion

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship between customer loyalty, repurchase/repurchase intent and satisfaction in order to attempt to resolve the mixed views on these concepts. A quantitative review of loyalty-repurchase satisfaction constructs was conducted to identify the strength and direction of the researched relationships and the influence of possible moderating factors affecting those relationships. The Hunter and Schmidt (1990) meta-analytical technique and software were employed. The results demonstrate that loyalty and satisfaction indicate strong positive relationships (0.54). Repurchase and satisfaction display a complicated relationship, which confirmed the view that satisfaction does not explain repurchase behavior. Repurchase …

Cosmetic advertisements are so common that it is difficult to distinguish one from the other. Celebrity endorsers are being utilised by cosmetic companies to promote …

Impact Of Relational Marketing Of Laptops: High Tech Product Adoptions In A Retail Setting, Anirudha Vasant Bansod

Theses

Marketing has developed from using a simple transactional model to a more sophisticated relational orientation model. Selling and marketing practices are different according to the culture of a country, purchasing power parity, economical situations, political conditions, the demand versus supply gap ratio and the socioeconomic conditions of the market place. Academics have translated these factors into a simple sales discipline. However, every region and country has its own style of business.

The business problem in this study was to understand ‘how retailers develop effective marketing strategies to increase the consumer’s propensity to buy high-tech products from their retail stores in …

An Analysis Of Donor Involvement, Gender, And Giving In College Athletics, Stephen L. Shapiro, Lynn L. Ridinger Jan 2011

An Analysis Of Donor Involvement, Gender, And Giving In College Athletics, Stephen L. Shapiro, Lynn L. Ridinger

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Involvement has been examined extensively within the consumer behavior literature. However, limited research exists concerning involvement and charitable contributions. Additionally, because of women's growing financial power, college athletic departments are increasingly interested in understanding how to attract greater numbers of female donors. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in donor involvement using Zaichkowsky's (1994) Personal Involvement Inventory (PII). Several demographic characteristics of donors were also compared by gender. A sample of 1,664 donors from three NCAA Division I universities participated in this study. The PII was found to be an adequate measure of donor …

Network Drivers Of Intercustomer Social Support, Hulda G. Black Jan 2011

Network Drivers Of Intercustomer Social Support, Hulda G. Black

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Customers in a service setting sometimes seek support from other customers; recent research has demonstrated this phenomenon. This research also found that intercustomer social support has a positive impact on consumer health, as well as the financial returns for the company. Given these positive effects for firms and customers, organizations can benefit from fostering social connections among their customers. While past research has investigated the positive consequences of intercustomer social support, little research to date has investigated the firm’s strategic role in fostering intercustomer social support. The current research seeks to understand key tactics a firm can use to promote …

[Introduction To] Propaganda State In Crisis: Soviet Ideology, Indoctrination, And Terror Under Stalin, 1927-1941, David Brandenberger

Bookshelf

The USSR is often regarded as the world's first propaganda state. Particularly under Stalin, politically charged rhetoric and imagery dominated the press, schools, and cultural forums from literature and cinema to the fine arts. Yet party propagandists were repeatedly frustrated in their efforts to promote a coherent sense of "Soviet" identity during the interwar years. This book investigates this failure to mobilize society along communist lines by probing the secrets of the party's ideological establishment and indoctrinational system. An exposé of systemic failure within Stalin's ideological establishment, Propaganda State in Crisis ultimately rewrites the history of Soviet indoctrination and mass …

Quality Of Work Life: A Review Of Literature, Maynard R. Bagtasos Jan 2011

Quality Of Work Life: A Review Of Literature, Maynard R. Bagtasos

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The Quality of Work Life (QWL) is a multi-faceted concept, having multi-dimensional constructs brought about by the variation of interest of the researchers and/or its users. The issue of QWL has become critical due to the increasing demands of today’s business environment and of the family structure. This gave rise to an increased interest in QWL not only in business but also for many professions and fields. Determining QWL always involves the interplay between and among the worker, job content, and job context. Furthermore, the determination of the extent of QWL in an organization is a perceptual undertaking. As such, …

Empirical Comparison Of Extreme Value Theory Vis-À-Vis Other Methods Of Var Estimation Using Asean+3 Exchange Rates, Cesar C. Rufino, Emmanuel G. De Guia Jan 2011

Empirical Comparison Of Extreme Value Theory Vis-À-Vis Other Methods Of Var Estimation Using Asean+3 Exchange Rates, Cesar C. Rufino, Emmanuel G. De Guia

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study applies Extreme Value Theory in calculating Value-at-Risk (VaR) of portfolios consisting of foreign exchange exposures of ASEAN+3 countries. This paper addresses the issue that traditional VaR models assume normality of the return distribution. Empirical evidence confirms the stylized facts that financial asset returns are typically negatively skewed and fat-tailed. Moreover, risk management concerns itself with the distribution of the tails, or events in the extremes of the distribution. Estimation of magnitude and the likelihood of extreme events should be given greater attention than central tendency characteristics. Thus, this paper proposes the application of Extreme Value Theory in computing …

Empirical Analysis Of Impact Of Capital Market Development On Nigeria’S Economic Growth (1981 – 2008) (Case Study: Nigerian Stock Exchange), Rowland T. Obiakor, Andy T. Okwu

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study empirically examined the impact of capital market development on economic growth in Nigeria for the period 1981-2008. The major tool we employed for empirical analysis is a multiple regression analysis model specified on the basis of hypothesized functional relationship between capital market development and economic growth. For capital market development indicators, we considered ratios of value of shares traded, market capitalization, gross capital formation and foreign private investment, to gross domestic product, as explanatory variables, while we used growth rate of gross domestic product as the dependent variable. We introduced an error correction term to capture the flexibility …
