Two Essays On Satisfaction, Vishal Bindroo Jan 2009

Two Essays On Satisfaction, Vishal Bindroo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two essays that study the relevant boundary conditions to the relationship between the customer satisfaction and loyalty. Retaining current customers is critical to a firm's performance and has been well-established in the literature. Extant literature tells us that loyal customers are typically less price sensitive, spend more than non-loyal customers, less expensive to retain, and more importantly, provide new referrals through positive word of mouth. In the first essay, drawing from decision justifiability theory, I posit that consideration set size and price-consciousness moderate the relationship between satisfaction and loyalty. At higher levels of consideration set sizes, …

Market-Based Asset Management And Shareholder Value: Investigating The Roles Of Human Capital And Factor Markets In Maximizing Returns On Customer Relationships, Chad Milewicz Jan 2009

Market-Based Asset Management And Shareholder Value: Investigating The Roles Of Human Capital And Factor Markets In Maximizing Returns On Customer Relationships, Chad Milewicz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The accountability of marketing investments continues to be a key area of concern for researchers and practitioners (MSI Research Priorities, 2008). In particular, market-based assets, specifically customer relationships, and their potential impact on firm performance are a significant source of interest. Though research in this area continues to grow, little is understood about how investments in human capital and the acquisition of alliance partners through factor markets relate to customer relationship management and the impact of customer relationships on performance. This dissertation presents two studies which, together, investigate how investments in market-based assets influence on abnormal stock returns. In the …

Marketing Partnerships: Impact Of Monitoring Schemes And Cooperative Advertising Agreements, Pavan Chennamaneni Jan 2009

Marketing Partnerships: Impact Of Monitoring Schemes And Cooperative Advertising Agreements, Pavan Chennamaneni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Marketing partnerships may involve either horizontal relationships (e.g., a co-marketing alliance between firms selling different products) or vertical relationships (e.g., between an upstream manufacturer and its downstream retailers). Either type of partnership often includes multiple members and the marketing efforts (e.g., level of advertising) of any member typically affect the profitability of the other members. When selecting their effort levels, however, the individual members of the partnership do not account for such externalities. Consequently, the overall effort on behalf of the partnership is not optimal. This dissertation investigates the value of contractual mechanisms such as monitoring schemes (for horizontal partnerships) …

Impact Of Returns Policies And Group-Buying On Channel Coordination, Thanh Tran Jan 2009

Impact Of Returns Policies And Group-Buying On Channel Coordination, Thanh Tran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the role of two marketing practices—returns policies and group-buying services—in improving channel coordination. The first study (presented in Chapter Two) focuses on the interaction between two types of returns policies—returns of unwanted products from consumers to retailers and returns of unsold inventory from retailers to manufacturers. Even without the right to return unsold inventory to the manufacturer, the retailers may accept returns from consumers; by doing so, they benefit from a less pricesensitive market demand, an ability to screen for high-valuation consumers, and a competitive advantage (offering a returns policy makes a retailer more attractive to consumers). …

Does Fair Trade Deliver On Its Core Value Proposition? Effects On Income, Educational Attainment, And Health In Three Countries, Eric J. Arnould, Alejandro Plastina, Dwanye Ball Jan 2009

Does Fair Trade Deliver On Its Core Value Proposition? Effects On Income, Educational Attainment, And Health In Three Countries, Eric J. Arnould, Alejandro Plastina, Dwanye Ball

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Alternative trade organizations (ATOs) based on philosophies of social justice and/or environmental well-being are establishing new channels of trade and marketing. Partisans promote ATOs as systems to transfer benefits from consumers in the wealthy northern hemisphere to producers in the poor southern hemisphere. The central public policy question is whether the well-being of poor agricultural producers in the southern hemisphere is actually being improved by fair-trade practices, or are consumers who buy products on this premise deceived? The research reported here partially answers the question whether participation in a fair-trade coffee marketing channel delivers benefits to smallscale producers in Latin …

The Joint Impact Of Brand Value And Advertising On Corporate Financial Performance And On Stock Return: A Case Study Of The Computer Industry, Alladin O. Ukiwe Jan 2009

The Joint Impact Of Brand Value And Advertising On Corporate Financial Performance And On Stock Return: A Case Study Of The Computer Industry, Alladin O. Ukiwe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Firm's advertising and marketing expenditures do not always translate to measurable financial returns. Understanding brand value appropriation and financial consequences of advertising is important for more focused investments in branding and marketing. This quantitative study sought to understand the joint effects of advertising expenditure and brand value (BV) on firms return on assets (ROA) and on stock return (SR) in the computer industry. The theoretical framework of the study was the resource-based view theory that proposes that the intangible assets of a corporation have a direct relationship to its ability to sustain its competitive advantage. The key research question involved …

Marketing Concept Manifestations In Fiji Enterprises: Confirming The Link To Organizational Competitiveness, Stern Neill, Raghuvar Dutt Pathak, Narendra Reddy Jan 2009

Marketing Concept Manifestations In Fiji Enterprises: Confirming The Link To Organizational Competitiveness, Stern Neill, Raghuvar Dutt Pathak, Narendra Reddy

Marketing

This paper proposes an integrative view of the marketing concept (i.e., the ability to understand and satisfy customers) and examines its prevalence and effect on competitiveness in organizations operating in an isolated and less economically developed country. The marketing concept manifests as marketing expertise, market orientation, and externally directed organizational values. Based on a sample of 86 firms operating in Fiji, the results indicate that these three mechanisms promote organizational competitiveness, thus supporting the universality of the marketing concept. These findings confirm the important role of the marketing concept in the competitiveness of firms in a less developed economy.

Improving The Profitability Of Direct Marketing : A Quantile Regression Approach, Xi Zhang Jan 2009

Improving The Profitability Of Direct Marketing : A Quantile Regression Approach, Xi Zhang

Lingnan Theses

Direct marketing is to target consumers who are most likely to respond. A number of target selection methods have been employed to select potential customers. These methods either only consider the customer response probability and ignore the profit issue or assume that the estimates of profit are homogenous across customers when considering the expected amount of profit. Furthermore, the traditional analytical techniques based on ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, which focus on the average customer, cannot examine the differences of various customer groups or account for customer heterogeneity in profitability estimates. Quantile regression, instead of the point estimate for the …

"Seeing Is Believing?" : A Persuasion Knowledge Model On Attitudinal Evaluations In Advertisements, Yan Wu Jan 2009

"Seeing Is Believing?" : A Persuasion Knowledge Model On Attitudinal Evaluations In Advertisements, Yan Wu

Lingnan Theses

This study examines the effects of individuals' beliefs about persuasion tactics (i.e., persuasion knowledge) evoked in an advertisement on their attitudes toward the advertisement and the advertised brand. Drawing on persuasion knowledge theory, this thesis develops a conceptual model that argues how ad image incongruence, defined as an inappropriate match-up between model type (western versus local) and advertised product category (western product category versus local product category) featured in advertisements, leads to the use of persuasion knowledge, which in turn affects attitudinal evaluations. A series of experimental studies were conducted. The results suggest that individual’s use of persuasion knowledge mediates …

Exploring The Use Of Exchange Market Pressure And Rmu Deviation Indicator For Early Warning System (Ews) In The Asean+3 Region, Marvin Raymond F. Castell, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy Jan 2009

Exploring The Use Of Exchange Market Pressure And Rmu Deviation Indicator For Early Warning System (Ews) In The Asean+3 Region, Marvin Raymond F. Castell, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Although macroeconomic and financial surveillance mechanisms have been in place both at the global level and at the Asia regional level, the results of the empirical analysis provide some evidence that a regional monetary unit (RMU) can be used to supplement existing surveillance tools for improved crisis detection and prevention. In particular, this study showed that the RMU may be useful as a tool for macroeconomic consultation.

The Functional Specification Of The Wageexperience Relationship And Male Wage Inequality In The Philippines: A Decomposition Analysis, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy Jan 2009

The Functional Specification Of The Wageexperience Relationship And Male Wage Inequality In The Philippines: A Decomposition Analysis, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study analyzed the factors that have contributed to the increase in wage inequality among male workers in the Philippines. Using the Fields (2003) framework as a decomposition platform, the validity of the usual parametric specification of the wage-experience relationship to ascertain the effects of functional misspecification on wage decomposition estimates was investigated. The study found that the quadratic specification of the nonlinear relationship is inadequate, thereby favoring the use of the semiparametric partially linear model, which does not impose any functional assumption on the said relationship.

An Evaluation Of Financial And Non-Financial Environmental Disclosures Of Ten Publicly-Listed Mining Companies In The Philippines, Nimpha M. Aquino Jan 2009

It was found out that there was no uniformity in the environmental disclosures of the 10 mining companies. It was also discovered that there was no existing environmental reporting standards as far as environmental disclosure is concerned. The study provided recommendations to the standard-setting council to improve the firms’ environmental disclosure compliance with a discussion regarding the benefits these recommendations might offer.

An Excerpt From The Sec Commissioned Report: A Balance Sheet Disclosure Compliance Check Of Ten Publicly-Listed Companies, Ma. Gina T. Manaligod

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study is an excerpt of a SEC-commissioned report. It investigated the extent of compliance of 10 publicly-listed finance companies with regard to the provisions of relevant PFRS/PAS on balance sheet disclosure requirements. This was accomplished by examining the balance sheet and the related note disclosures of the 10 companies. It was found the all 10 companies had deficiencies in their balance sheet disclosures. It can be implied from this study that deficiencies in disclosure requirements stem from the standards themselves. Recommendations for the improvement of disclosure compliance were provided.

Stock Diversification And Integer Programming, Emilina R. Sarreal Jan 2009

Stock Diversification And Integer Programming, Emilina R. Sarreal

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study shows how investors can maximize returns by preparing and monitoring their own stock portfolio by using an integer programming model with an algorithm that can be computed in spreadsheet and linear programming software. Further, the study emphasizes the importance of diversifying stockholdings to reap optimal returns and minimum volatility/risk. It also suggests employing behavioral portfolio theory where goals/aspirations of investors are combined with their reward-to-volatility profile.

Exchange Rate Pass-Through For Selected Southeast Asian Countries, Stephanie L. Chan Jan 2009

Exchange Rate Pass-Through For Selected Southeast Asian Countries, Stephanie L. Chan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Long- and short-run exchange rate pass-through coefficients were estimated for Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines using a simple model based on absolute purchasing power parity. Results were lower than 0.30 for all four countries. Cointegration tests confirmed the existence of a long-run relationship between CPI, GDP, exchange rate, and the U.S. PPI for the countries studied. However, the post-estimation tests showed that a more comprehensive model may need to be developed. The low coefficients reflect the success of the countries in stabilizing their inflation levels, though implying that exchange rate interventions may be less effective in restoring trade balance.

Consumer Decision Making And Aging: Current Knowledge And Future Directions, Carolyn Yoon, Catherine A. Cole, Michelle P. Lee Jan 2009

Consumer Decision Making And Aging: Current Knowledge And Future Directions, Carolyn Yoon, Catherine A. Cole, Michelle P. Lee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We review existing knowledge about older consumers and decision making. We develop a conceptual framework that incorporates the notion of fit between individual characteristics, task demands and the contextual environment. When the fit is high, older consumers use their considerable knowledge and experience to compensate for the impact of any age-related changes in abilities and resources. When the fit is relatively low, older consumers feel increased need to adapt their decision making processes. We discuss these consumer adaptations and propose a number of research questions related to the processes underlying them in order to contribute to a better understanding of …

When Income Matters: Customers Evaluation Of Shopping Malls' Hedonic And Utilitarian Orientations, Thomas Allard, Barry J. Babin, Jean-Charles Chebat Jan 2009

When Income Matters: Customers Evaluation Of Shopping Malls' Hedonic And Utilitarian Orientations, Thomas Allard, Barry J. Babin, Jean-Charles Chebat

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study, based on 772 shopper's interviews in two shopping malls, establishes that malls can achieve differentiation from their competitors through the pursuit of singular orientations following the hedonic and utilitarian dimensions of shopping. Furthermore, perceived differentiation from competitors is found to positively influence customers’ attachment to the mall, a determining factor in the mall's evaluation. Interestingly, mall's orientation related to hedonic elements was found appealing by all subjects, although slightly more by those with lower income. However, utilitarian orientation appeared strictly effective on those with higher income. Theoretical and managerial implications along with limitations are discussed.

An Exploration Of A Model Of Social Networks And Multilateral Negotiations, Bruce Money, Chad R. Allred Jan 2009

An Exploration Of A Model Of Social Networks And Multilateral Negotiations, Bruce Money, Chad R. Allred

Faculty Publications

Multilateral (many‐party) negotiations are much more complex than traditional two‐party negotiations. In this article, we explore a model of social network activity, especially clique formation, among parties engaged in multilateral negotiation and the implications that such networks might have on the negotiation process and outcome. Using data collected from 375 subjects participating in a negotiation simulation, our results reveal that, primarily, the negotiator’s perspectives of clique formation (coalition building) — both his or her own and the other party’s — have unique effects on the integrative, problem‐solving approaches used in the process and on the negotiator’s satisfaction with outcomes. Secondarily, …

Engaging Embedded Information: Toward A Holistic Theory Of Knowledge Transfer In Organizations, Michael P. Thompson, Robert J. Jensen, Kristen Detienne Jan 2009

Engaging Embedded Information: Toward A Holistic Theory Of Knowledge Transfer In Organizations, Michael P. Thompson, Robert J. Jensen, Kristen Detienne

Faculty Publications

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a model of knowledge transfer that takes into account both the perspective of the sender and the perspective of the receiver, with an emphasis on the latter. The contention is that, although externalizing knowledge residing in an individual or group and making it accessible to others either through direct communication or embedding information in the organizational system is a necessary component of knowledge transfer, it is not the only component. An equal, but understudied, share of the knowledge transfer effort takes place when the receiver of the knowledge engages with …

Blind Insights: A New Technique For Testing A Priori Hypotheses With Qualitative Methods, Eric D. Derosia, Glenn L. Christensen Jan 2009

Blind Insights: A New Technique For Testing A Priori Hypotheses With Qualitative Methods, Eric D. Derosia, Glenn L. Christensen

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to propose and illustrate blind qualitative hypothesis testing, which is a qualitative research technique that further generalizes the well-known notion of “blindness” in research to include a qualitative researcher. The technique introduces a method to test a priori hypotheses using qualitative, emergent observation and analysis without the biasing influence of prior knowledge of the hypotheses being tested.

A Sense Of Things To Come: Future Research Directions In Sensory Marketing, Ryan S. Elder, Nilufer Z. Aydinoglu, Victor A. Barger, Cindy Caldara, Helen Haeeun Chun, Chan Jean Lee, Gina Mohr, Antonios Stamatogiannakis Jan 2009

A Sense Of Things To Come: Future Research Directions In Sensory Marketing, Ryan S. Elder, Nilufer Z. Aydinoglu, Victor A. Barger, Cindy Caldara, Helen Haeeun Chun, Chan Jean Lee, Gina Mohr, Antonios Stamatogiannakis

Faculty Publications

The exciting exploration on sensory marketing presented in this book is just the foundation upon which to build future research. There are myriad unexplored questions and innumerable directions in which to take this research. Our goal in this chapter is not to provide an exhaustive array of these future directions, but rather to stimulate the reader into exploring new ideas. We present possible future directions for each sense individually (vision, audition, smell, touch, taste), and conclude with ideas for future research addressing the interplay among multiple senses within consumer behavior.
