A Theological Context Of Work From The Catholic Social Encyclical Tradition, Michael John Naughton, Gene R. Laczniak
A Theological Context Of Work From The Catholic Social Encyclical Tradition, Michael John Naughton, Gene R. Laczniak
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
This article draws upon 100 years of writings which are referred to as the Catholic Social Tradition (CST). Using this tradition as a guide, the nature of work is explored along with the principles and virtues which vitalize the deepest dimension of work — how it affects the dignity of the human person. It develops five operational ethical principles which can be applied to questions of workplace ethics. Organizational policies and programs that seem consistent with CST are also discussed.
Michael Naughton is Assistant Professor of Management and Theology at the University of St. Thomas (MN). Dr. Naughton's major research …
Conducting Interorganizational Research Using Key Informants, Nirmalya Kumar, Louis W. Stern, James C. Anderson
Conducting Interorganizational Research Using Key Informants, Nirmalya Kumar, Louis W. Stern, James C. Anderson
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this article, we examine the use of the key informant methodology by researchers investigating interorganizational relationships. Authors have advocated the use of multiple informants to increase the reliability and validity of informant reports. However, interorganizational research still tends to rely on single informants. We investigated informant selection and obtaining perceptual agreement among multiple informants, two problems that may have inhibited widespread use of multiple informants. We suggest procedures for dealing with those problems and provide an illustrative application of our proposals.

Materialism And The Self, Kathleen Shirley Micken
Materialism And The Self, Kathleen Shirley Micken
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
Materialism has been called the most significant macro development in modern consumer behavior. Despite its importance, research about the construct is rather new. Two scales have been developed to measure materialism, one proposed by Belk, the other by Richins and Dawson.
The purpose of this dissertation is threefold. First, it extends the materialism research program by investigating the relationship between materialism and one's self concept. Hypotheses which drive the research posit that people who are more materialistic have lower self-esteem, are less likely to be self-actualized, are extrinsically rather than intrinsically motivated, and are likely to be high self-monitors. The …

An Exploration Of High-Risk Leisure Consumption Through Skydiving, Richard L. Celsi, Randall L. Rose, Thomas W. Leigh
An Exploration Of High-Risk Leisure Consumption Through Skydiving, Richard L. Celsi, Randall L. Rose, Thomas W. Leigh
Faculty Publications
A sociocultural approach is used to explore voluntary high-risk consumption Specifically, we examine the dynamics of individuals' motives, risk perceptions, and benefit/cost outcomes of participation in increasingly popular high-risk leisure activities such as skydiving, climbing, and BASE jumping (parachuting from fixed objects). An ethnography of a skydiving subculture provides the primary empirical data. We propose an extended dramatic model that explains both macroenvironmental and inter- and intrapersonal influences and motives for high-risk consumption. Key findings indicate (1) an evolution of motives that explains initial and continuing participation in high-risk activities and (2) a coinciding evolution of risk acculturation that leads …

I always wanted to "do" advertising ever since I was five years old. I'd sit in front of the TV on Saturday morning and edit the toy commercials in my head. I wasn't sure what I was doing--but I knew it was better than what was on TV.

Tempting The Japanese Taste Buds, Glenis Ayling
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
"Australia needs to differentiate its product from those of other countries: it needs to do something a bit different toget products on the shelves and sold.
Japanese consumers expect the price to be reasonable and the flavor to be good. They will buy on the image the product cenveys, and the image or 'message' the country of manufacture has in Japan," -

Empirical Implications For Small Business Drug Policies, Donald R. Curtis, Dillard Tinsley, Geralyn Mcclure Franklin
Empirical Implications For Small Business Drug Policies, Donald R. Curtis, Dillard Tinsley, Geralyn Mcclure Franklin
Faculty Publications
The results of empirical studies of small and large businesses parallel each other regarding the characteristics of drug policies. Drug policies affect organizational performance, including improved productivity and reduced accidents. EAPs are an effective approach to drug policies. and outside contractors are common sources of information and services. Pre-employment testing is usually combined with other types of testing, but careful attention is needed to meet legal requirements. Employees with positive tests may cause difficulties, but, overall. employee morale rises. Small businesses without drug policies are increasing their competitive risks.
Production Of High-Value Wheats : One Sustainable Answer To The Cost:Price Squeeze, Wal Anderson, Alan Peggs, Doug Sawkins
Production Of High-Value Wheats : One Sustainable Answer To The Cost:Price Squeeze, Wal Anderson, Alan Peggs, Doug Sawkins
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Farmers and scientists alike over the past decade have sought to address the declining terms of farm trade (the cost.price squeeze) by increasing wheat yields in ways that will ensure both their economic and ecological survival. Nevertheless, costs have continued to increase as a proportion of the value of the product.
Many farmers have increased their wheat yields substantially and the industry as a whole is more conscious of the quality of its product.
Over the past 10 years or more there has been intense interest in, and considerable adoption of. conservation farming techniques such as minimum tillage, residue retention, …
Development Of The Export Wine Industry, Tony Devitt
Development Of The Export Wine Industry, Tony Devitt
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In 1936-37, Australia exported 18.6 million litres of wine, a level not achieved again for 50 years. World War II, the price, quality and style of Australian wine all contribuited to the demise of our wine export markets.
Australia's 'new' wine industry, which surfaced in the 1960s, has re-established our position as a significant exporter of high quality wines that are competitvely priced and percieved tobe 'pure and of integrity.
Western Australia is well placced to have a significant role in the expansion of Australia's wine exports.
Export Of Rockmelons From The Ord River, John Bonnardeaux
Export Of Rockmelons From The Ord River, John Bonnardeaux
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The Ord River Irrigation Area and Carnarvon are the main production areas for cucurbits in northern Western Australia. Cucurbits are also grown in Derby, Broome and around Lagrange, south of Broome.
The area planted to rockmelons in the Ord River Irrigation Area has increased from 20 ha in 1980 to 425 ha in 1992.
Rockmelon production, the most important horticultural industry in the Ord River Irrigation Area, is worth about $9 million. It accounts for about 25 per cent of the Ord's dry season value of production
Production And Marketing Of Vegetables And Fruit, John Burt
Production And Marketing Of Vegetables And Fruit, John Burt
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Vegetable and fruit production in Western Australia is a diverse, high value industry. Up to 75 different crops are grown from Kununurra in the north to Albany on the south coast.
Our horticultural industries were worth $238,127,000 in 1990-.91, which represented 18 per cent of all crops produced in Western Australia.
Markets for horticultural produce are volatile. For most lines, produce has been well supplied for the past four years, owing to an increasing area of production, higher yields, improved postharvest technology and reduced consumer demand in the recent recession.
