Each semester a wide variety of mentors come in our classrooms to expand the design students understanding of the design profession. They come from around the region to pass on their expertise.
Junior student mentors:
Calvin Clawson, Facilities Designer, James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, was a mentor for the Junior Studio, discussing programming for the Children’s Optometry and Radiology Clinic. His discussion included how to plan for MRI zones as well as government guidelines as well as safety and requirements for this type of facility.

CPNP Foundation Announces Student Registration and Travel Grant Recipients Thanks to the generous funds provided by the CPNP Foundation, CPNP Past Presidents, and CPNP members, twenty (20) students are receiving complimentary registrations and a $330 travel grant to be used toward their attendance at CPNP 2016. These twenty students were selected by the CPNP Student Committee based on the merits of their applications.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy received one of two diversity grants from the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation to support the pharmacy school’s commitment to recruiting a diverse student body.
The $15,000 grant will help Gatton College of Pharmacy develop an outreach program aimed at currently enrolled pre-health professional students from the Appalachian region who are the first in their families to attend institutions of higher learning. Nearly half of the pharmacy school’s students are first generation, and over a third of the college’s students are from rural zip codes. …

JOHNSON CITY Dr. Nick Hagemeier was working as a pharmacist at an independent community pharmacy in Lebanon, Indiana, in 2007 when he spotted a masked man coming through the door one morning.
He walked up and said, I want all of your OxyContin, recalls Hagemeier, now an assistant professor at East Tennessee State Universitys Gatton College of Pharmacy. He wasnt joking around. He had a gun and he gave us 20 seconds to get him the drugs.

ETSU Department of Geosciences faculty Dr. Andrew Joyner received a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) grant to develop the first ever Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) for the ETSU campus, beginning in the summer of 2016. HMPs help to identify long-term, broadly supported strategies for risk reduction and align resources on the greatest risks and vulnerabilities. In conjunction with the grant, a new lab in the Department of Geosciences has been created the Geoinformatics and Disaster Science (GADS) Lab. ETSU Professor, Dr. Emily Flores gave students a detailed tour of ETSU Family Medicine Associates. Students had the opportunity to view daily routines for healthcare professionals. Important aspects of acoustics, privacy, efficiency in programming was clarified for patient rooms and common areas. Students learned how important it is to do research before specifying furniture, fixtures and equipment. Dos and don’ts in healthcare were emphasized.

This summer was the inaugural summer of Studio Rome. Students took four classes and earned a full semester of credits by spending 10 weeks immersed in the culture and designs of Rome, Italy. They not only saw all the amazing buildings/spaces/art across thousands of years but experienced current design trends, local design professionals, sustainable practices in Rome and Vatican City, and worked on their own designs for two piazzas located in the heart of the city. Meghan, a current University of Tennessee Student, who is triple majoring in physics, honors math, and computer science, will be studying math at the Renyi Institute in Hungary. She also plans to pursue research in topology.

Mr. Christopher stressed the importance of designing for safety and that it was an important current issue in the built environment. He discussed typical project procedure for risk assessment and safety. He explained that it is a daily activity not just a one-time procedure. Another topic discussed was acoustics. JOHNSON CITY Dr. Larry Calhoun, founding dean of the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University, is the recipient of a prestigious national honor from the American Pharmacists Association (APhA).
Calhoun has received the 2016 APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists Outstanding Dean Award, which was was established in 2004 by the APhA to recognize a school or college of pharmacy dean who has made significant contributions to the APhA-ASP chapter and promoted the welfare of student pharmacists through various activities.

JOHNSON CITY For the second time in school history, the Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University was named the national champion of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP)s Clinical Pharmacy Challenge.
The Clinical Pharmacy Challenge is a unique pharmacy student team competition that draws participation from institutions across the country. The online competition gave 112 teams the opportunity to compete in up to four rounds of competition in Hollywood, Florida, where they answered questions about everything from cardiovascular disorders and critical care to immunology and palliative care.
