JOHNSON CITY A student and a research fellow in East Tennessee State Universitys Gatton College of Pharmacy recently returned from a trip to Nashville where they participated in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacys annual meeting and related activities.
Irene Abia, a fourth-year student pharmacist, and Dr. KariLynn Dowling, a post-graduate research fellow, are among just 85 individuals across the nation to receive the 2017 AACP Walmart Scholar Program scholarship that allowed them to attend the events on July 15-19 in Nashville with their faculty mentors.

While the national recognition for their efforts certainly is nice, members of the Gatton Generation Rx chapter say it is the difference they are able to make in people’s lives that is the real reward.
“It is very humbling to interact with others and hear the stories about how their lives have been saved or their loved ones are still here because of what we are out doing,” said Dawnna Metcalfe, a second-year student pharmacist. “We really work hard to get knowledge out there about safe medication practices for all ages.”

Isaac Kinser is no stranger to ETSU. He’s been on campus since enrolling at University School in fifth grade. The junior exercise science major plans to commission as an Army officer once he graduates from ETSU, but he didn’t always feel so confident in his future. “A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting After 2000" is composed entirely of paintings by women, and attempts to categorize Expressionism in new terms,” says curator Jason Stopa, a New York City writer and painter and who holds an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute. Originally from the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York, “A New Subjectivity” features female artists Gina Beavers, Katherine Bernhardt, Katherine Bradford, Jackie Gendel, Liz Markus, and Rose Wylie. The exhibit will be on display at the Reece Museum until December 15th, 2017.

The Harvest exhibition features Lindsay Rogers series of new, unfired seed collection baskets titled American Monolith, in collaboration with Sow True Seeds. It also includes her tablescape of contemporary functional ware and select sculptural vessels from her graduate thesis series, Close to Home.
Rogers, an assistant professor of ceramics in the ETSU Department of Art & Design, uses her work as a ceramic artist to advocate for a more locally based, sustainable food system. Mr. Charles (Charlie) Young and Mr. Doug Able are veteran speakers and serving as mentors throughout the Sophomore Studio 3 Wounded Warrior project. During their interaction with the students they discussed both the physical and psychological issues related to designing for veterans: more specifically Vietnam veterans. The students were really engaged asking intelligent questions and giving the veteran's feedback from personal experiences with friends and family members.

Cormark International, (Weaverville, NC) importers of fine exotic hardwoods, is a 27-year-old South African based, family owned business with strong ties in the African lumber industry hosted INTD sophomore students last weekend. Jason talked to students about sustainable foresting practices and importing woods from all over the world. A particular interesting example was how a log is selected for sustainable harvesting, whole logs milled and kept together(shown), imported in the USA, and finally dried in Cormark’s kilns before being sold. One important aspect that drives most design decisions is cost. Learning how to estimate those costs early in the design process is critical to completing a successful design. Dr. Kellogg, ETSU’s Construction Engineering Program Coordinator, discussed how to use R.S. Means Books with junior design students. RS Means show the typical costs and materials needed for a particular type of construction. Students learned how to estimate costs and will use that knowledge on their next project.

Sophomore Interior Architecture Student Taylor Starlin was one of two ETSU students to experience the National Student Leadership Forum. This forum focused on leadership where we learned special skills on how to be a leader. Taylor visited with Congress on the floor for the house where the president gives the state of the union address. She made friends from all over the United States.

In their last studio at ETSU, senior design students presented their projects on how design can address a social issue. This semester long project included research papers, multiple presentations using various types of delivery methods (Skype, PowerPoint and large presentation boards - shown). All during the semester they worked with regional professional mentors who works with them each week. Topics included homelessness, Greek life center, and social artistry. In order to help understand diversity and human factors, Interior Design Students have exercises on Ethnic Cultures, Aging Myths and Realities and Simulation Activities. In the Simulation Activity participants are divided into groups of three or four individuals and perform activities that simulate motor and sensory changes that may accompany aging or life events. They are required to perform activities of daily living (ADL). Participants are asked to perform the tasks in their impaired state and cannot remove simulating devices until the exercise is completed. The ETSU sophomores and juniors attended in this year’s Unity for Design Event at the High Point Design Center in High Point, NC. They attended a continuing education lecture hosted by Sherwin Williams and toured lighting, furniture, textile, and accessory showrooms throughout the city. Emily Ducko and Heather Raymond represented ETSU in a Showroom Display Design Challenge, where they competed against established design professionals to create a living room display located in various cities. Eighteen students and two faculty Dr. Ingrid Luffman and Dr. Mick Whitelaw, spent 10 days studying the geography and geology of the Pacific Northwest. The first week was devoted to volcanoes and associated landforms and processes. We hiked part of Mt. Ranier and saw glaciers and meltwater streams, viewed Mt. St. Helens from multiple angles, including a hike through a lava tube south of the volcano. At Crater Lake, students traveled by boat to Wizard Island, a small volcano-within-a-volcano, and had the opportunity to swim in the cold, clear waters of the lake. One of the most anticipated spring trips is when sophomore students visit High Point, NC to experience the Spring Furniture Market. High Point Market is the largest furnishings trade show in the world! Students are given tours of several of the vendors showrooms and are given time to explore on their own the 11.5 million square feet of vendor spaces. The first exercise of the freshmen studio course is to learn about basic wall construction by building a full-size wall. Students measured, cut and assembled a wood stud wall so they learned about all the parts of a basic wall. This basic construction knowledge is then used in their first project appropriately names, “Walls” where they use walls to direct visitors through a view pavilion in the Imperial Gardens in Kyoto, Japan.

We are proud to announce that the ETSU Interior Architecture program has be awarded accreditation from CIDA (Council of Interior Design Accreditation) for a six-year term. The Accreditation Commissions decision was based on the interior architecture programs demonstrated achievement of sixteen accreditation standards. The evaluators noted the program had strengths in 9 of the 16 standards. The next re-accreditation visit is in 2023.

Drs. Walls, Panus, Odle, Covert, and Karpen from Gatton College of Pharmacy and Dr. Courtney Hall who has positions at ETSU’s Physical Therapy department and the Mountain Home VA have received a $50,000 Interdisciplinary Grant from ETSU’s Research Development Council to study fall risk in older adults. Dr. Hall is the Principal Investigator on the award.
Each year, 2.5 million people 65 and older are treated in emergency departments for falls, resulting in over 700,000 hospitalizations. Falls are among the 20 most expensive medical conditions, with an average hospital cost for a fall-related injury of $35,000, leading to an estimated …

They discussed how acoustics affects health, safety, comfort and human factors and productivity and what solutions can help alleviate sound issues. Sculpture professor Travis Graves has been awarded an individual artists fellowship from the Tennessee Arts Commission for 2017. The fellowship provides a monetary award of $5000 to outstanding professional artists in a particular art form or discipline.
Graves has taught sculpture in the Department of Art & Design since 2005 and was the receipent of the ETSU Distinguished Faculty Award in Teaching in 2013.
