And while masks are essential during this global pandemic, a grant awarded to the Little Bucs Childcare Program at East Tennessee State University is making it possible for teachers to wear clear facial masks in the classrooms.

(Rockville, MD – January 4, 2021) A. Lynn Williams, PhD, CCC-SLP, took office this month as the 2021 president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
In her term, Williams will work to advance the objectives of ASHA and its more than 211,000 members and affiliates who are audiologists; speech-language pathologists; speech, language, and hearing scientists; audiology and speech-language pathology support personnel; and students in communication sciences and disorders.

JOHNSON CITY – After several years of careful planning, the Climate Office for the state of Tennessee has been officially recognized at East Tennessee State University by the American Association of State Climatologists (AASC).
The Tennessee Climate Office (TCO) at ETSU has been fulfilling the basic responsibilities of a state climate office since its establishment in 2016, providing climate data services to state agencies, researchers and citizens and studying the impact of drought, extreme rainfall, severe storms and other hazards. JOHNSON CITY – The main project in one of Kamyl Harvey-Bogan’s classes at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine transformed into an opportunity for the fourth-year medical student to raise awareness about racial disparities in health care and bring attention to ways in which future physicians can overcome them.
Last summer, Harvey-Bogan took an elective course that taught the students how to build medical simulation cases for medical education. Two student pharmacists at Gatton College of Pharmacy have earned the Mitch and Barbara Cox Pharmacy Scholarship, one of the college’s most prestigious awards. The scholarships provide $10,000 to each student and includes mentoring with the scholarship founders, Mitch and Barbara Cox.
Mitch, who has managed a successful business for more than 40 years, and Barbara, who is a former biology teacher, have supported the college since its founding and in recent years created the scholarship.
This year, recipients of the Cox Scholarship are Jonathan Holan (’23), of Morristown, and Tabitha Sineath (’24), of Spring, Texas.

JOHNSON CITY – Jeffery Blanton, who has served in various leadership roles for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has joined East Tennessee State University as Assistant Vice President for Administration and Director of Emergency Management.
Blanton has more than 30 years of law enforcement experience at the local and federal levels. Most recently, he was the supervisory senior resident agent for the Johnson City office of the Knoxville Division of the FBI where he led a team of 30 agents, task force members and support staff and was responsible for all FBI investigations in upper East Tennessee.

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development will offer its three-month Pharmacy Technician Certification Training Course starting Feb. 2.
The class, which is limited to 13 in-person students and also offers a remote option, will train participants to assist pharmacists in handling medications and serving patients. Those who pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination become nationally certified.
The course instructor is Cheryl Ollry, a pharmacy technician at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Ollry has over 15 years of experience in retail and hospital pharmacy.

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – The Women’s Studies Program at East Tennessee State University will host a two-day institute in January 2021 about infusing trauma-informed care principles into strategies for teaching and learning.
Dr. Phyllis Thompson, director of the Women’s Studies Program and associate professor in the Department of Literature and Language, is co-organizing the institute with members of the Women’s Studies Steering Committee. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 14, 2020) – The ETSU Health COVID-19 community collection site that delivers PCR molecular test results in 24 hours is moving to a new location at the East Tennessee State University Parking Garage, located at the corner of State of Franklin Road and Jack Vest Drive.
Beginning Monday, Dec. 14, the COVID-19 collection site will become a drive-through testing site, operating on the second floor of the parking garage. Pre-registration through the ETSU Health website (www.etsuhealth.org) is required for tests.
