Market Power Versus Regulation Forces: The Impact Of Antitrust Regulation On Software Firms, Gwona Ko, Boreum Choi, Wooje Cho, Young Bong Chang
Asia Marketing Journal
The omnipresence of software firms is triggering substantial antitrust concerns, calling into question the adequacy of existing regulatory frameworks. This study explores this pivotal concern in the context of the software industry, which is characterized by profound network externalities among customers and a rapid pace of innovation. Our study used the event study methodology on data from 252 antitrust cases involving the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Justice from 2000 to 2022, which revealed important insights into the differentiated effects of U.S. antitrust announcements on the market value of software firms. Although antitrust announcements generally have a …

Does Your Company Care About The Fears Of Pandemic For Salespeople? Insights From Pandemic Demands And Resources, Ihsan Ullah Jan, Seonggoo Ji, Changju Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
The pandemics (e.g., COVID-19) disrupt the roles of all professionals, particularly those of salespeople. This study seeks to empirically examine how fears amidst the pandemic, as pandemic demands, influence salespeople's attitudinal and behavioral outcomes and how organizational and personal resources as pandemic resources mitigate the negative outcomes for salespeople. Building on the job demands-resources (JD-R) model and employing the partial least squares-based structural equation modeling, this study tested the proposed hypotheses using responses from 237 salespeople in South Korea. The results mainly supported hypotheses. As a major theoretical contribution, this study delineates Pandemic fears in terms of salespeople's fear of …

Exploring The Impact Of Negative Brand Experiences On Consumer Emotions And Behavior, Li Mei Liu, Seong Ho Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
With the continuous development of social media, negative brand emotions have emerged as a significant social phenomenon. However, existing marketing research predominantly focuses on positive emotions. This study aims to explore how the sensory, emotional, behavioral, intellectual, and social dimensions of negative brand experiences elicit consumer regret and brand hate, which subsequently drive the spread of NWOM. Using SEM to analyze data from 1,000 Chinese consumers, this study finds that all dimensions of negative brand experiences significantly influence both regret and brand hate. Consumer regret further amplifies brand hate, intensifying its emotional impact, and drives the dissemination of NWOM. This …

Measuring The Effect Of A Brand Communication Strategy Through Consumer-Generated Content: A Case Study Of Telecommunication Services, Jiwon Baek, Haejin Seo, Tae Ho Song
Asia Marketing Journal
The objective of marketing communication is to develop brand knowledge in consumers’ minds by informing and persuading consumers with the information that the brand needs to convey. However, existing studies on advertising effects have primarily focused on quantitative performance metrics. Although studies measuring consumers' cognitive responses have increased recently, it is still difficult to find research analyzing the effectiveness of advertising from a communication perspective. Therefore, we aimed to examine the communication effectiveness of advertising by utilizing Consumer-Generated Content data. The results of the Semantic Network Analysis and centrality analysis revealed differences in advertising effectiveness between the two brands. Moreover, …
Rethinking Money: How The Backfire Effect Shapes Consumer Reactions To Recommendations, Hee-Kyung Ahn, Eunkyoung Lee
Rethinking Money: How The Backfire Effect Shapes Consumer Reactions To Recommendations, Hee-Kyung Ahn, Eunkyoung Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
This research explored how priming of money influences consumers' reactions to others' opinions, particularly regarding compliance with different types of recommendations. Across two experiments, we found that subtle reminders of money made individuals value their independence in decision-making. As a result, they tended to respond negatively to recommendations that were overly prescriptive, such as specific product suggestions. On the other hand, when money reminders accompanied recommendations that offered some flexibility—like suggestions for product categories—individuals were more likely to agree with these flexible recommendations than specific suggestions. This effect even persisted when the category recommendations included only a single alternative.

Detrimental Impact Of Waiting On Dining Experiences: Evidence From Online Restaurant Reviews, Jooa Baek, Yeongbae Choe
Asia Marketing Journal
This study employs big data analytics to examine customers’ waiting experiences in restaurants, a critical component of the broader hospitality and tourism industry. Drawing upon a large corpus of online reviews, the analysis uses topic modeling to identify four salient themes that emerge—waiting, food, servicescape, and service quality—informing the way in which customers perceive and evaluate dining experiences. Two subsequent regression analyses reveal a significant negative relationship between waiting-related comments and overall review ratings, underscoring the disproportionate influence of waiting experiences in shaping customer satisfaction. These findings offer valuable insights for hospitality and tourism practitioners and researchers aiming to deepen …

Beyond Revenge Spending: Exploring The Role Of Loneliness And Online Brand Equity In Sustained Luxury Consumption Among Asian Mz Adults, Sukyoung Kang, Sanghee Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
This study examines the relationship between loneliness, online brand equity, and luxury purchase intentions among Asian MZ adults. While prior research attributed the surge in luxury purchases during COVID-19 to ``revenge spending'' aimed at alleviating negative emotions, this study suggests that individuals leverage loneliness, transforming it into a driving force for luxury consumption by addressing emotional needs rather than simply compensating for distress. By highlighting online brand equity as a moderating factor, the study demonstrates how luxury brands, traditionally reliant on offline experiences, can leverage digital channels to connect with Asian MZ consumers. Based on a survey of 200 participants, …

Balance Or Highlight? The Impact Of Power On Consumer Choices For Joint Consumption, Chaeyeong Kim
Balance Or Highlight? The Impact Of Power On Consumer Choices For Joint Consumption, Chaeyeong Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
Consumers often make decisions on behalf of the self and others, such as family, friends, or colleagues, when choosing products to jointly consume. Postulating that power—a central element of social dynamics—shapes reliance on internal versus external information, the current research explores its effect on joint consumption choices. Across three studies, I find that low-power individuals balance self and others’ preferences, whereas high-power individuals are likely to highlight their preferences (H1). In addition, I provide evidence for decision-making strategy (i.e., reliance on reasons vs. feelings) as the key mechanism underpinning the relationship between power and joint consumption choices (H2). Finally, I …

Effects Of The Preannouncement Of Donation Expenditure On The Evaluation Of Charitable Organizations And Overhead Aversion, Kwanho Suk, Triza Mudita
Asia Marketing Journal
Charitable organizations use donated funds for program costs to support the cause and overhead costs to cover the charity's general operation and fundraising. This research investigates the influence of preannouncement of donation expenditure on attitudes toward charity and overhead aversion (i.e., negative response to overhead). Preannouncement of donation expenditure involves the disclosure of how donor contributions will be allocated to the program and overhead costs. The results of two empirical studies show that preannouncement positively influences attitudes toward charity and mitigates overhead aversion. Study 1 indicates that the preannouncement of donation expenditure enhances perceived donation impact, leading to a positive …

Online Behavioral Advertising (OBA), a recently emerging format of internet advertising, targets users based on their past online behaviors. This study examines the impact of OBA on consumer attitudes and impulse buying behavior, while exploring the moderating influence of privacy concerns, a crucial factor given that OBA relies on personal data collection. To test our conceptual model, we conducted surveys in Korea and France, to further analyze the potential cultural distinctions. Our findings, derived from a series of linear regression models, reveal that OBA significantly affects consumers' impulse buying, with this effect mediated by consumers' attitudes toward OBA. Moreover, consumers' …

This study employs a hierarchical component model to examine reuse intentions among experienced carsharing service users in South Korea, focusing on how various perceptions of benefits and risks impact their decisions. It also explores the influences of self-efficacy, gender, and service usage experience on these perceptions and reuse intentions. Findings highlight that male users are primarily driven by functional benefits such as accessibility and convenience, whereas female users are more responsive to hedonic benefits. Users with high self-efficacy prioritize economic benefits, whereas those with more usage experience prioritize functional benefits. Additionally, social risks significantly deter reuse intentions predominantly among male …
From Limited Control To Green Empowerment: The Motivational Synergy Of Fresh Starts In Predicting Environmental Action, Seon Min Lee, Seungwoo Chun
From Limited Control To Green Empowerment: The Motivational Synergy Of Fresh Starts In Predicting Environmental Action, Seon Min Lee, Seungwoo Chun
Asia Marketing Journal
This study leverages group-based control theory to explore how fresh starts reinvigorate consumers with low motivation to engage in collective environmental efforts. Typically, individuals with low control over their circumstances show less inclination toward collective goals. However, fresh starts can enhance the influence of perceived control on collective environmental engagement, with global identity mediating this relationship. This hypothesis was supported by two empirical studies. The first study analyzed data from 10,430 corporate participants in an energy-saving initiative, revealing that smaller organizations, which likely experience lower levels of control, made substantial energy-saving efforts early in the year, although this effect diminished …

The Impact Of Model Pose On Consumer Perceptions Of Price: A Perceived-Power Perspective, Jeonggyu Lee, Dong Hoo Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
This study examines how a model's pose that signals power influences consumers' recall ability of price information in advertisements. To extend prior findings on social judgments, we suggest that the direction of consumers' gaze and willingness to pay attention to the model vary depending on the model's pose. Study 1 explores how consumers' perception of the power of the model affects their price recall ability. In particular, consumers demonstrate better price recall for items displayed at the bottom of the ad when the model adopts a powerful pose and items displayed at the top when the model in the ad …

Paying Back To Good Deeds: A Text Mining Approach To Explore Don-Jjul As Pro-Consumption Behavior, Hojin Choo, Sue Hyun Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
More consumers are choosing pro-consumption for social change, but scholars know little about why and how consumers engage in pro-consumption behaviors. A newly emerged pro-consumption behavior called "Don-jjul,'' which appeared during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea, refers to compensating businesses that have engaged in altruistic actions by boosting their sales. This study used Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) of topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and in-depth interviews to investigate the perceptions, motivations, and emotions regarding Don-jjul. As a result, the study revealed pro-consumers' perceptions of Don-jjul as "collective pro-consumption for contributing to social well-being.'' Don-jjul has two main motives: "supporting underdogs …
Nodding As A Catalyst For Improving Attitudes And Purchase Intentions In Online Context, Yusu Lee, Jinhee Choi
Nodding As A Catalyst For Improving Attitudes And Purchase Intentions In Online Context, Yusu Lee, Jinhee Choi
Asia Marketing Journal
This study investigates the influences of the head movement (nodding vs. head shaking vs. nothing) on consumer attitude and purchase intention toward the product in an online shopping context and introduces the consumer motivation (need vs. want) as a moderating factor for this relationship. Through two studies, this article finds that nodding, as opposed to head shaking or no movement, leads to more positive attitudes and higher purchase intentions toward the product, and this effect is strengthened when the shopping is pursued with a need compared to a want motivation. The effect is found specifically in the fashion industry, where …

How Google Advertisements Attract Consumers' Call-To-Action And Electronic Word-Of-Mouth, Tser-Yieth Chen, Hsueh-Ling Wu, Jiun-Hua Yun
Asia Marketing Journal
This study investigated central and peripheral route factors to assess the impact of Google Advertisements on how these factors contribute to users' call-to-action (CTA) and electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM) behaviors. We explored the persuasive effects of Google Advertisements on consumers by using a dataset of 483 valid empirical samples from Taiwan. We employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the hypotheses. The empirical results of this study indicate that both peripheral (image appeal) and central (information completeness) routes positively lead to the persuasion effect. This finding confirms that the peripheral and central routes increase the persuasion effect. The empirical results indicate …

The Effect Of Ewom On Movie Sales Considering Competition And Culture, Jungwon Lee, Cheol Park
Asia Marketing Journal
This paper aims to empirically analyze how competitive and cultural factors moderate the relationship between electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) characteristics and sales in the US and Korean film industries. A conceptual model was developed based on the cue utilization theory (CUT) to analyze the role of cultural and competitive factors that moderate the relationship between three characteristics of eWOM (volume, valence, and variance) and movie sales. Data of 45 days of 163 films released in Korea and the US were collected and a total of 7,335 samples were analyzed by panel regression. As results, competitive factors enhanced the influence of the …

Extended Reality (XR) technology, the umbrella term covering hyper-realistic technologies, is known to enhance consumer experience and is therefore developing rapidly and being utilized across various industries. Growing studies have examined XR technology and consumer experience; however, the literature has failed to fully explore hyper-realistic technology through a holistic perspective. To fill this gap, we analyzed 720 Korean and international articles through semantic network analysis and topic modeling and identified the literature on XR research in consumer experience. As a result, we extracted six main topics: “Tourism,” “Buying Behavior,” “XR Technology Acceptance,” “Virtual Space,” “Game,” and “XR Environment.” The results …
Observer Responses To Others' Charitable Donations: Effects Of The Donor Social Class-Donation Type Interaction, Shinhyoung Lee
Observer Responses To Others' Charitable Donations: Effects Of The Donor Social Class-Donation Type Interaction, Shinhyoung Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
The social impact of observing others' charitable donations remains underexplored, with few studies examining the influence of donors' social class. Across three experiments, we investigated how the donor social class-donation type interaction influences the observers' perceived sacrificial costs or desire for a moral self-identity, which consequently affects their willingness to donate. The participants perceived higher costs when lower-class donors made monetary donations, but for time donations, they saw no difference in sacrificial costs by donor social class. Moreover, when the hourly wage was emphasized, the participants felt an increased desire for a moral self-identity from higher-class donors' monetary donations and …
Identifying The Actual Impact Of Online Social Interactions On Demand, Dong Soo Kim
Identifying The Actual Impact Of Online Social Interactions On Demand, Dong Soo Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
Firms often engage in manipulating online reviews as a promotional activity to influence consumers' evaluation on their products. With the prevalence of the promotional activities, consumers may notice and discount the reviews generated by the promotional activities. Discounting the firm-generating reviews may cause systematic measurement errors in the valence variable and lead to a negative bias when estimating the effect of consumers' organic reviews on demand. To correct the bias, this study proposes including product-specific bias-correction terms representing the proportion of extreme reviews in analysis. For illustration, the proposed method is applied to a demand model for data of movies …

Crisis To Opportunity: The Role Of Consumer Awareness In Mergers And Acquisitions (M&As) During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Hojoon Jang, Junhee Seok, Jongdae Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
In the uncertainty fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic, mergers and acquisitions (M&As) have emerged as key strategic responses by firms. This study explores the impact of M&As on acquirers' firm value, utilizing a firm-level panel dataset from SDC Platinum. Empirical evidence recognizes the potential negative impact of transaction value in M&As and the pandemic's effect on market volatility that may occasionally exacerbate the adverse influence on acquirers' firm value. The findings indicate that effective marketing strategies, such as enhancing consumer awareness through increasing advertising expenditures, can counterbalance these influences, particularly during uncertain times. This study accentuates the importance of adaptability …

Incomplete Decisions On Reward-Based Crowdfunding Platforms: Exploring Motivations From Temporal And Social Perspectives, Kwangwook Gang, Hoon S. Cha, Ilyoo B. Hong
Asia Marketing Journal
This study explores incomplete decision-making dynamics on reward-based crowdfunding platforms, focusing on temporal and social factors influencing backers' decisions. Utilizing the temporal aspect (i.e., pledging campaign phase) and social aspect (i.e., current pledged amount ratio) as stimuli within the stimulus-organism-response framework, our findings reveal that nearly 50.9% of respondents change their initial decisions, highlighting widespread incomplete information processing. Backers are more prone to altering decisions under heightened time pressure and display herding behaviors. Furthermore, backers exhibit an increased likelihood of changing decisions under heightened time pressure, coupled with a greater chance that the pledged goal amount will not be achieved. …
Experiencing High Loneliness Increases Evaluation Of Products In Social Media Ads, Youjung Jun, Taehyeon Eom
Experiencing High Loneliness Increases Evaluation Of Products In Social Media Ads, Youjung Jun, Taehyeon Eom
Asia Marketing Journal
This research investigates how loneliness affects people’s preferences for products that appear in social media ads. Four studies examine the impact of loneliness that is both measured in an established scale and situationally induced via a recall task. Individuals who experience higher levels of loneliness evaluate the same products more highly when they are advertised in a social (i.e., Instagram) compared to non-social (i.e., brand website) media platform. This effect occurs because loneliness increases people’s attention to others’ social evaluation of a product, and social media ads provide this information via social cues such as “likes” embedded in the ads. …
