Destination Marketing Organizations’ Stakeholders And Best Practices, Bonifacio Lopez Torres, Godwin-Charles Ogbeide

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

As marketing practices continue to advance, the tourism industry is constantly evolving in terms of marketing strategies and in the shifting duties of its stakeholders. Different organizations plan the advancement of their marketing strategies differently, and Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) are no exception. With so many destination options, travelers may find themselves with too many destinations and too much information to easily make the decision on their own. The main role of the DMOs is to sell the destination using different marketing strategies and various incentives to make their destination more appealing, and by working with all of their stakeholders …

Depth Of A Salesman: Exploring Personality As A Predictor Of Sales Performance In A Multi-Level Marketing Sample, Colleen Rose Miller

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Despite its growing prevalence in the realm of sales occupations, multi-level marketing (MLM) and its primary participants are not very well understood. In particular, there is a dearth of understanding in terms of the differentiating characteristics of individual sellers who are financially successful in comparison to those who perform poorly. This study sought to fill in some of these research gaps by exploring the antecedents of sales success by examining the validity of personality as a predictor of sales performance in the context of MLM. While significant relationships were indeed observed between certain facets of personality (specifically components of conscientiousness, …

Beneath The Kiss: Unearthing The Ideological Underpinnings Of Kay Jewelers Advertisements, Chelsea Nedlyn Hill Jan 2015

Beneath The Kiss: Unearthing The Ideological Underpinnings Of Kay Jewelers Advertisements, Chelsea Nedlyn Hill

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Advertising is a frequently used influential and persuasive means of communication, such as Kay Jewelers, a corporation whose advertising methods have been superficially appealing to a female audience. However, this study sought to investigate the ideological underpinnings associated with Kay Jewelers advertisements, employing an ideological criticism to argue through feminist theory that Kay Jewelers utilizes key elements of heteronormative love as a means to persuade and influence men to purchase their jewelry products. Through this underpinning of heteronormative romance, Kay Jewelers emphasizes the notion that an artifact, like a piece of jewelry, is necessary in order to properly express …

From Grapes To Wine To Brands To Culture: A Qualitative Study Of Kentucky Wineries And Kentucky Wine Producers, Benjamin J. Triana

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

The Kentucky wine industry has grown from six wineries in 1999 to more than sixty wineries as of 2013. However, the industry has reached a crucial point in its development as funds allotted from the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement ended in 2014. As a result, Kentucky wine producers must navigate the demands of local, regional, national, and international wine markets without the same amount of economic support provided in the early stages of the industry’s development.

The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) how Kentucky wine producers use cultural associations to manage their brands, (2) communicate with multiple …

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Wide variations in climatic conditions from prolonged dry season to frequent occurrence of super typhoons have significant impact on the Philippines, especially on rural poor households which depend heavily on agriculture and food production for subsistence and income. This paper provides a research framework that can be used to understand the dynamics between climate change and agriculture. The framework incorporates the effects of climate change on agricultural productivity, as well as the effects of agricultural activities and land use on climate change through the emission of greenhouse gasses. The framework uses three simulation models to analyse the impact of climate …

Evaluating Banking Agents: A Case Of Brazilian Banking Correspondents, Tania Pereira Christopoulos, Lauro Emilio Gonzales Frias, Tomás Costa De Azevedo Marques

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Financial institutions play an important role in the development of any country’s economy, but there is still an enormous gap between supply and demand of financial services that meet the needs of the poor. Hence, it is important to analyze the role of the traditional financial system in the expansion of proper financial services, and their accessibility to the poor. Within inclusive finance, the most promising topic seems to be branchless banking. One major example of branchless banking is the case of banking correspondents (BC) in Brazil. In order to deepen the comprehension of the subject, this article will present …

Breastfeeding In The Philippine Workplace: What’S Wrong With The Right?, Emily Sanchez Salcedo Jan 2015

Breastfeeding In The Philippine Workplace: What’S Wrong With The Right?, Emily Sanchez Salcedo

DLSU Business & Economics Review

There are four main differences between the Philippine and American statutes that promote breastfeeding. First, the Philippine law provides that lactation breaks should be compensated while the American law explicitly stated that employers are under no such obligation. Second, the Philippine law provides for “culturally appropriate lactation care and services” whereas majority of American states exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws. Third, the Philippine law makes a conclusive statement that breastfeeding “enhances mother-infant relationship”. The American law wisely left such matter to individual realization. Fourth, the Philippine law puts the right of a mother to breastfeed on equal footing with …

Dine In Or Out: Understanding The Budgeting And Eating Out Behavior Of De La Salle University Students, Ma. Luisa C. Delayco, Hazel T. Biana

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The preparation and consumption of one’s food is governed by choices, attitudes, behavior, and beliefs. In De La Salle University, a school surrounded by a variety of restaurants, students make these food choices every day. Understanding how these food decisions are made is noteworthy, as this paper seeks to comprehend the students’ budgeting and eating out behavior through the use of Fishbein and Ajzen’s Theory of Reasoned Action. The underlying variables of the budgeting and eating out behavior of students are used to explain the pattern of correlations within a set of observed variables. Through an administered survey and data …

Heuristics And Consumer Uncertainty: Sorting Through Online Reviews, Cory Catalano Jan 2015

Heuristics And Consumer Uncertainty: Sorting Through Online Reviews, Cory Catalano

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

As shopping online continues to grow in popularity and convenience, so does the way consumers communicate information about products they have purchased. Most online retailers utilize some form of product review system (PRS) and customers are often encouraged to leave feedback about the product and their online shopping experience. Often a product can have radically polarizing reviews making it confusing for consumers. Using Berger’s and Calabrese’s Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT) as well as Chaiken’s Heuristic-Systematic Model of Information Processing (HSM), this study looks to deduce what heuristic methods are the best for consumers who are looking to make informed decisions …

Development Of A Fuzzy Linear Programming Model For Allocation Of Inoperability In Economic Sectors Due To Loss Of Natural Resource Inputs, Raymond R. Tan, Kathleen B. Aviso, Michael Angelo B. Promentilla, Krista Danielle S. Yu, Joost R. Santos Jan 2015

Development Of A Fuzzy Linear Programming Model For Allocation Of Inoperability In Economic Sectors Due To Loss Of Natural Resource Inputs, Raymond R. Tan, Kathleen B. Aviso, Michael Angelo B. Promentilla, Krista Danielle S. Yu, Joost R. Santos

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The inoperability input-output model (IIM) has recently been proposed as an extension of conventional input-output analysis for assessing the vulnerability of interdependent infrastructures to various perturbations, such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, and deliberate attacks. The IIM framework makes use of a dimensionless risk metric called inoperability, which quantifies the degree of failure of a system on a scale ranging from 0 (normal state) to 1 (total failure). This inoperability is then assumed to propagate through any given industrial network after being induced by initial demand or supply-side perturbations. This work presents a fuzzy linear programming (FLP) model to allocate …

Does Service Employees' Appearance Affect The Healthiness Of Food Choice?, Tabea: Benoit Huneke, Sabine Benoit, Anders Gustafsson Jan 2015

Does Service Employees' Appearance Affect The Healthiness Of Food Choice?, Tabea: Benoit Huneke, Sabine Benoit, Anders Gustafsson

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Derived from previous research on social influence on food consumption and social comparison theory, this article examines the effect of service employees’ appearance on consumers’ food choice using an experimental study, involving a video manipulation and eye-tracking technique. The video shows a menu being proffered by a waitress whose degree of apparent healthiness varies (healthy, overweight, unhealthy lifestyle). The menu contains both healthy and unhealthy meal alternatives. The analysis of participants’ eye movements demonstrated that exposure to the overweight employee did not stimulate greater (i.e., earlier or longer) attention to unhealthy meal alternatives, whereas exposure to the employee who displayed …

Examining Endorsement And Viewership Effects On The Source Credibility Of Youtubers, Stephanie Fred Jan 2015

Examining Endorsement And Viewership Effects On The Source Credibility Of Youtubers, Stephanie Fred

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The growth of YouTube has resulted in the industrialization of a platform that redefines mainstream success. Success measures such as endorsements and viewership are serving as motivational factors for YouTubers. YouTubers and brands want more views, but are those motivations effecting perception? While much research has focused on the effects that YouTube has on the brand, this study focuses on the effects that the brand has on the YouTuber. It also determines whether viewership affects YouTuber perception and whether it‟s a success measure worth using. Using the constructs of the source credibility theory, this study assessed the main effect of …

How You Categorize Influences How Helpful You Are: The Effect Of Categorization Mindset On Consumers’ Social Decisions, Hsiao-Ching Kuo Jan 2015

How You Categorize Influences How Helpful You Are: The Effect Of Categorization Mindset On Consumers’ Social Decisions, Hsiao-Ching Kuo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates how categorization mindsets (introduced by Ulkumen et al., 2010) moderate the altruistic behavior of consumers in decisions that have consequences to others besides oneself. Categorization mindset refers to a way of thinking about options, and is induced by simple sorting or categorization tasks. Ulkumen et al. (2010) has shown that mindsets can be unidimensional (in terms of being focused on a single, salient dimension) or multidimensional (in that both salient and non-salient dimensions are processed). Across three experiments, this dissertation finds that a multidimensional mindset (compared to a unidimensional mindset) enhances the preference for other-oriented options among …

Perspectives On Why The Glass Ceiling Still Exists For Women In Advertising And Media And Tools To Help Shatter It, Olivia Hottle Mossman Jan 2015

Perspectives On Why The Glass Ceiling Still Exists For Women In Advertising And Media And Tools To Help Shatter It, Olivia Hottle Mossman

Honors Program Theses

This ethnographic study provides current insights into the barriers women experience as they seek executive positions in the media and advertising industries—careers largely held by men. Interviews with women who currently or have previously held management roles in media and advertising companies are analyzed and presented. The knowledge gained from these interviews raises awareness of the lack of women’s voices on the media channels that influence a society’s perception of what is socially and culturally acceptable. This research also counteracts an absence of recent research regarding this topic. As the study evolved, it looked more at the relationships between women …

Maximizing Sharability And Persuasiveness On Web 2.0, Yuhua (Jake) Liang, Christina Lopez, Tim Seavey, Shelby Stanton

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Online marketing efforts usually focus on the persuasiveness or sharability of a message. However, research has not established where these two concepts overlap. The current study explores this overlap. Web 2.0 platforms facilitate the delivery of different content and statistics to convey the persuasiveness and the sharability. An original experiment varied message quality (high argument strength, direct message, and emotional message) and web cues (i.e., ratio of views, likes, and shares) to signal self-presentation (favorable and unfavorable). Prospective participants will view mock webpages for internet news and donation collection, followed by measures of the content persuasiveness and sharability.

The Dream Of The Theatre Is Alive In Portland: The Potential Of A New Company To Succeed, Amaya Santamaria

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

According to the 2013 census there are approximately 609,456 people living in Portland, Oregon. There is no demographic data tabulated for 2013, however a look at the 2010 statistics can help paint a picture of Portland and its racial and educational make up. That year, 76.1% of people identified as “white alone.” The African American population constituted 6.3% and the Hispanic 9.4%. While it is true that, typically, Caucasian audiences make up the majority of theatre attendees, perhaps more telling are the statistics regarding education. In Portland, 43.1% of people hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to the 29.2% …

Social Media Marketing For The Medical Industry: Best Practices To Avoid Legal And Ethical Issues, Jessica Padilla

Journalism

This study analyzes the best social media practices for medical industry professionals and the proper and ideal uses for social media. It analyzes the public relations functions of social media—relationship building, reputation management, and crisis communication. With the constant rise of social media as a widely-used medium for marketing comes increased potential for damage to a medical business’ reputation, loss of medical licensing, or lawsuits if practitioners do not act within the lines of legal and ethical standards. Medical offices must have an online presence to remain relevant and build and keep relationships with new and current patients. This study …
