A top natural products research scientist from Colombia visited East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy last week to meet with student pharmacists and help demonstrate the drug discovery process.
 
Dr. Ruben Torrenegra, who was recognized in 2018 by the government of Colombia as one of its top scientists, has helped make possible the college’s drug discovery program since 2008 when he partnered with Dr. Victoria Palau, Professor Emerita of Pharmaceutical Sciences, who started her cancer research with plants when she came to ETSU in 2007.

The 56th annual East Tennessee State University Alumni Golf Classic was held at Cattails at MeadowView in Kingsport on Friday, Sept. 22.

ETSU alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and volunteers were present for the two-person select-shot tournament held by the ETSU National Alumni Association. Nearly 100 people took their oath of citizenship in front of a large crowd of guests and friends on Friday, Sept. 29. The Honorable J. Ronnie Greer, U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Tennessee and a graduate of ETSU, presided over the ceremony.

This marked the second time that ETSU hosted a naturalization ceremony after becoming the first higher education institution in East Tennessee to host one in 2018.

Following their oath of allegiance, the new U.S. citizens received certificates of citizenship, as well as American flags from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Dozens of faculty, alumni and students represented East Tennessee State University at the 2023 International Bluegrass Music Association World of Bluegrass Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina – one of the most significant bluegrass events in the world. Several ETSU faculty and alumni from the ETSU Bluegrass, Old Time and Roots Music Studies Program earned nominations for awards, and four took home honors in their respective categories.

East Tennessee State University was founded in 1911 with the goal of improving the quality of life for people in the region and beyond. However, the roots of this institution began to grow in 1909 when the citizens of our region sought to convince Governor Malcolm R. Patterson to locate the East Tennessee Normal School in Johnson City.

Dr. Blair Reece spends most of her time in the classroom and clinical setting teaching medical students how to diagnose and treat patients.

However, her favorite thing to teach her students is how to talk to patients. 

“I love teaching students how to have difficult conversations,” said Reece, an assistant professor at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine. “I think that’s a really important part of our job, especially as internal medicine physicians. I have to have difficult conversations all the time, and you don’t just wake up knowing how to have those conversations.”
