The Executive Director for Academic Advisement, a newly created role at ETSU, is the university’s principal leader of undergraduate advisement.  Her office will work in close partnership with advisors and other student success professionals at ETSU to create and carry out initiatives to promote student success, retention and graduation.  This includes fostering the application of national best practices in advising and serving as an advocate for ETSU’s advising professionals across campus.

JOHNSON CITY (June 9, 2021) – Garrett Hall, a May 2021 graduate of East Tennessee State University’s Radiologic Science Program, is still celebrating his academic and professional achievements more than a month after commencement.

Within weeks of receiving his diploma from ETSU, he took and passed the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). JOHNSON CITY (June 2, 2021) – A “storymap” telling the story of the Gray Fossil Site using maps of fossils clarifies how the site formed and improves paleontological research.

“Spatial Analyses of the Gray Fossil Site Vertebrate Remains” was created by David Carney, a May graduate of ETSU’s master’s degree program in geosciences with a concentration in paleontology. This study combined geographic information systems (GIS) and vertebrate taphonomy – the study of what happens to animals after death and burial – and was published as his master’s thesis.

JOHNSON CITY (June 1, 2021)  – A group of East Tennessee State University scientists recently published their first COVID-19 related paper emerging from funding awarded to Dr. Zhi Q. Yao by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The paper, titled “Blockage of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-mediated cell–cell fusion using COVID-19 convalescent plasma,” was recently published in Scientific Reports. The funding Yao received from the ADA in 2020 was the university’s first major funding for COVID-19-specific research.

He trains them for the types of situations they may face.  He provides feedback in the clinical setting.  He shares research and best practices, and he leads important exploratory discussions on the complex ethical standards that govern the profession.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University is preparing to launch two in-demand programs that will expand its footprint in the rehabilitative sciences – a Doctor of Occupational Therapy and a Master of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics.

After finishing an undergraduate degree at another university, Adam Derrick wasn’t quite sure what they wanted to do next.  It was at this crossroad that Adam “stumbled” into the AmeriCorps program.

And from there, the future suddenly became clear. 

Adam’s first AmeriCorps assignment was in Austin working with College Forward, an organization that assisted first-generation and low-income students in setting higher education goals and helping them succeed. Adam served as a mentor to these students and loved the experience.

JOHNSON CITY (May 27, 2021) — For almost a decade, groups of East Tennessee State University business student volunteers have offered free tax preparation assistance through the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.
