JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (December 2021) – For Tennesseans, passion flowers are a point of regional pride, officially designated as a Tennessee state flower back in 1919. Now, a century later, paleontologists have found fossil evidence of an extinct Appalachian passion flower species, Passiflora appalachiana, previously unknown to science.
This ancient species is unique to the fossil record of Tennessee, museum officials said, and it is proof that these flowers have adorned the local landscape for millions of years.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the region, the College of Business and Technology at East Tennessee State University has announced the start of its Entrepreneurship-In-Residence (EIR) program, exposing student candidates to startup investment decisions.
The program is a collaborative effort between The Angel Roundtable (ART) of the Appalachian Highlands and the Entrepreneurship Program at ETSU’s College of Business and Technology. East Tennessee State University has released its annual holiday video, a parody of “Santa Baby” with the lyrics rewritten to “Santa Bucky.”
Making a festive appearance in the 2021 edition is Greyscale, one of ETSU’s best known a cappella ensembles. They perform a broad mix of music, including jazz and pop, and are well-known on campus and throughout the region.
ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland and First Lady Donna Noland are also part of the video, as is the university’s mascot, Bucky.

(Nov. 23, 2021) – East Tennessee State University’s Department of Media and Communication will offer a series of courses and testing leading to the Adobe Certified Associate (ACP) professional credential in Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro and After Effects beginning Dec. 13.
Course participants will have access to online training materials for three weeks. All courses are 100% online and asynchronous. JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 23, 2021) – Dr. Rick Wallace of East Tennessee State University was named the 2021 Rural Health Professional of the Year Award by the Rural Health Association of Tennessee (RHA of TN).
Wallace is a professor and associate director for evidence and outreach in the Quillen College of Medicine Library at ETSU.

(Nov. 23, 2021) - A course to train pharmacy technicians is offered by East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development from Feb. 1-April 26, 2022.
This class, limited to 35 students, will train assistants to assist pharmacists in handling medications and serving patients. Those who pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination become nationally certified.
The course instructor is Cheryl Ollry, a pharmacy technician with the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She has over 15 years of experience in retail and hospital pharmacy. The course now offers more sessions to accommodate PTCB requirements.
