JOHNSON CITY (May 4, 2020) – A Virtual Showcase and Fundraiser will be presented Thursday, May 7, to benefit East Tennessee State University’s ongoing Bucs Help Bucs campaign.

This showcase will feature a compilation of videos recorded by students and faculty in ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Program. It will begin at 7 p.m. on Facebook Live and will be hosted by program director Dan Boner.

The idea for students to submit videos for a virtual concert came from senior ETSU bluegrass majors Sophia Chambers, Mikaela Langley and Charly Smith.

The quantitative impact of the arts has become an increasingly important factor in determining the overall value of a project, and is often used to determine acceptance of submissions, public recognition and funding disbursement. This project evaluates current understandings of how the arts function within society, popular methods for determining the value of the arts and explores how qualitative reasoning can be utilized to communicate the value of supporting artistic endeavors. The program will be offered through the Clemmer College and coincides with the launching of ETSU’s new esports varsity team which was announced last December.

According to Dr. Natalie Smith, the esports industry is booming, yet there are only 20 or less academic programs in the country.

JOHNSON CITY (May 4, 2020) – A team of students from three departments at East Tennessee State University won first place in district 7 of the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) sponsored by Adobe.

The NSAC tasks AAF college chapter teams to develop an integrated marketing campaign in response to a real-world marketing challenge facing Adobe.

Jonathan Ross Byrd played a lot of sports while growing up on a small farm in his hometown of Thurmond, North Carolina. After high school, he earned his associate degree in graphic design and worked for a couple of years before entering the National Guard. Byrd spent eight years as a combat engineer, which included a tour in Afghanistan in 2011-12. After leaving the military in 2014, he returned to school and earned his bachelor’s degree in studio art at Western Carolina University. Students interested in experiencing pharmacy can attend East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy’s annual summer camp, “Gatton Pharmacy Footprints,” on May 31-June 5. This year, the camp is overnight.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Reece Museum and Mary B. Martin School of the Arts and community supporters are expanding the geographic boundaries of artists’ residency for a special collection of art reflecting the current times.

These entities have joined in an initiative to purchase artwork created in 2019 or 2020 for “Local Art in the Age of the 2020 Global Pandemic,” which will be housed in the Reece Museum’s Permanent Collection.

MPower is a leadership and diversity conference hosted annually by the UM Student Union for incoming freshmen. I conducted a meeting with University officials including the Dean of students providing concrete evidence for why the University of Mississippi should increase financial investment for the program. JOHNSON CITY (April 27, 2020) – Dr. Scott Champney, professor emeritus in East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine, has recently published a monograph describing 20 years of research on a novel antibiotic target.

Champney taught in ETSU’s Department of Biomedical Sciences for 31 years. His paper, “Antibiotics Targeting Bacterial Ribosomal Subunit Biogenesis,” was published as the lead article in the April 2020 issue of the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.
