JOHNSON CITY – The Street Medicine Interest Group (SMIG), a new student organization at East Tennessee State University, is building bridges with community partners to help people who are experiencing homelessness overcome barriers to health care.

The group hosted its first flu clinic on Friday, Dec. 18, at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. This event provided donations of warm clothing to many and flu shots to 12 individuals who are experiencing homelessness in the Appalachian Highlands.

JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 16, 2020)  – Several student organizations at East Tennessee State University are sponsoring a collection drive for personal protective equipment (PPE) and hygiene products now through Friday, Nov. 20.

Students are collecting hand sanitizer, masks, face shield, gloves, and other PPE/hygiene products in donation bins on campus. The bins are located on the first floor of Sherrod Library and the D.P. JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 9, 2020) – A study by Dr. Martin Olsen of ETSU Health OB/GYN reveals new information about the prevention of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), which occurs when infants go through withdrawal from an addictive drug they were exposed to in the womb.

Olsen’s study, published in the November 2020 issue of the Southern Medical Journal, reviewed the charts of 21 pregnant patients who were enrolled in an outpatient buprenorphine medication-assisted therapy (MAT) tapering program at ETSU Health.

JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 3, 2020) – Dr. Erik Petersen, assistant professor in East Tennessee State University College of Public Health’s Department of Health Sciences, has received $300,000 to study Salmonella sensing-based antibacterials for use in poultry. 

The award is a collaborative bi-national grant with Dr. Erez Mills from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Rehovot, Israel.

“Currently, among the food-borne zoonoses, or diseases that are spread between animals and people, Salmonellosis has become a frequent major public health concern,” Petersen said.
