Walking into Mooney’s Pharmacy in Johnson City, Tennessee, on the day before Halloween, it’s clear that the locally owned pharmacy takes pride in how its staff serves its customers.

The store windows are painted in black and orange, decorative pumpkins and spider webs adorn the counters and shelves, and staff are dressed in a wide array of costumes.

JOHNSON CITY East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy students recently made an impact serving at four different independent community pharmacies across the region conducting blood pressure readings, immunizations and patient education. 

Participating as part of the ACT (Academia-CPESN Transformation) Pharmacy Collaborative National Day of Service, 15 ETSU pharmacy students provided outreach at Atchley Drug Center, Colonial Heights Pharmacy & Gifts, Olde Towne Pharmacy and West Towne Pharmacy.

JOHNSON CITY – After several years of careful planning, the Climate Office for the state of Tennessee has been officially recognized at East Tennessee State University by the American Association of State Climatologists (AASC).


The Tennessee Climate Office (TCO) at ETSU has been fulfilling the basic responsibilities of a state climate office since its establishment in 2016, providing climate data services to state agencies, researchers and citizens and studying the impact of drought, extreme rainfall, severe storms and other hazards. This study examines the gaps between the importance students place on brand equity dimensions and their perceptions of how well their university performs on each dimension. It also assesses if the brand equity dimensions differ based on student demographics including gender, class level, and their living arrangement. Data were collected from a university in the Midwestern U.S. from undergraduate students. JOHNSON CITY – The main project in one of Kamyl Harvey-Bogan’s classes at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine transformed into an opportunity for the fourth-year medical student to raise awareness about racial disparities in health care and bring attention to ways in which future physicians can overcome them.

Two student pharmacists at Gatton College of Pharmacy have earned the Mitch and Barbara Cox Pharmacy Scholarship, one of the college’s most prestigious awards. The scholarships provide $10,000 to each student and includes mentoring with the scholarship founders, Mitch and Barbara Cox.
Mitch, who has managed a successful business for more than 40 years, and Barbara, who is a former biology teacher, have supported the college since its founding and in recent years created the scholarship.

This year, recipients of the Cox Scholarship are Jonathan Holan (’23), of Morristown, and Tabitha Sineath (’24), of Spring, Texas.

JOHNSON CITY – Jeffery Blanton, who has served in various leadership roles for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has joined East Tennessee State University as Assistant Vice President for Administration and Director of Emergency Management.

Blanton has more than 30 years of law enforcement experience at the local and federal levels.  Most recently, he was the supervisory senior resident agent for the Johnson City office of the Knoxville Division of the FBI where he led a team of 30 agents, task force members and support staff and was responsible for all FBI investigations in upper East Tennessee.

Of the 3.5 million first-time in college, full time students who began college in fall 2017, 74% returned for fall 2018, with 61.7% retained at their starting institution. Covid-19 has negatively impacted retention; in addition to normal attrition, one of every five students did not return to campus in fall 2020. We propose a learning innovation called 3-in-1 Hybrid environment as a solution for educational institutions to meet the challenge of balancing campus reopening against public health risks amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Our proposed innovation provides students options to attend class synchronously (either face-to-face or remote) or asynchronously (online) in an interactive learning environment that promotes emotional, behavioral, and cognitive engagement. We designed and implemented a large Marketing Management class with over 800 students as a 3-in-1 course. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development will offer its three-month Pharmacy Technician Certification Training Course starting Feb. 2.

The class, which is limited to 13 in-person students and also offers a remote option, will train participants to assist pharmacists in handling medications and serving patients. Those who pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination become nationally certified.

The course instructor is Cheryl Ollry, a pharmacy technician at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Ollry has over 15 years of experience in retail and hospital pharmacy.
