Gillette’s latest ad has generated lots of conversation. But has the world’s largest shaving products brand lost more than it has gained?
Higher Education, Robert Ping
Higher Education, Robert Ping
Marketing Faculty Publications
Research on Higher Education, including promotion and tenure, and the possibility of reusing one's data for a second paper to help reduce the "time between papers." (Perhaps surprisingly, some editors do not object to reusing data, as long as new theory is being tested.) This Higher Education web page has been substantially revised and updated in its "The Jr. Faculty Corner" section. For example, the suggestions there for Revising and Resubmitting a paper and sample "Responses to the Reviewers" have been heavily edited for clarity and, utility.

Latent Variable Interactions And Quadratics, Robert Ping
Latent Variable Interactions And Quadratics, Robert Ping
Marketing Faculty Publications
Research on interactions (XZ) and quadratics (XX) in theoretical model (hypothesis) tests using structural equation analysis (LISREL, EQS, AMOS, SIMPLIS, etc.) and real-world data. Topics include XZ and XX reliability and validity. In theory tests these are important because low reliability/validity in XZ or XX may mean that a significant interaction or quadratic will be NS or of opposite sign in its next model test. Other topics include estimating categorical (nominal) variables, and improving measures that are in serious trouble--ones with low Average Variance Extracted (AVE), or unacceptable model-to-data fit (i.e., only a 3-indicator specification fits the data, etc.)
Brands Take A Stand For Good: The Effect Of Brand Activism On Social Media Engagement, Alexis A. Gray
Brands Take A Stand For Good: The Effect Of Brand Activism On Social Media Engagement, Alexis A. Gray
Honors Theses and Capstones
Brands are entering an era where brand activism and corporate social responsibility strategies are holding a large influence on consumer purchase decision making, rather than the traditional brand product marketing. A major distribution outlet for the rising brand activism strategy is through social media, where users can directly interact with brands and other users surrounding major issues. Higher engagement with such activism campaigns suggests more consumer support for the brand, leading to higher sales performance potential. This study examines the influence of brand activism campaign qualities on social media engagement, specifically on the Twitter platform. Tweets for 8 different brands …
The Augmenting Effects Of Artificial Intelligence On Marketing Performance, Jing Chen
The Augmenting Effects Of Artificial Intelligence On Marketing Performance, Jing Chen
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the antecedents and consequences of firm's artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. Based on technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework and institutional theory, I propose that technological opportunism, top management support, customer orientation, and normative pressure are the main antecedents lead to firm's AI adoption. According to firm's different strategic types, this study added that prospectors are most likely to adopt AI, followed that analyzers, defenders, and reactors. In addition, enlightened by dynamic capability theory, I further propose that the intensity of AI adoption will enhance firm's marketing performance through improved dynamic selling capability, dynamic pricing capability, dynamic new product development capability, …

What Supports Are Needed To Encourage And Assist Community Festivals And Events To Succeed And Grow? An Empirical Study., Helen Mcdwyer
Theses
Abstract: Communities are motivated to host festivals and events for a myriad of reasons. They generate important economic and social benefits for an area with increased visitor numbers, increased local spending and greater community cohesion. Festival and event tourism is an important segment of the overall tourism product in Ireland, particularly in an area such as Kerry where there is a heavy reliance on tourism. Many festivals and events in Kerry are organised by community and voluntary groups and yet these groups are increasingly pressurised to increase the professionality of their offering to compete for regional funding and sponsorship. Changes …

Men’S Cosmetics: Challenging Conventional Marketing Wisdom, Dae Ryun Chang
Asian Management Insights
The marketing of men’s cosmetics is challenging conventional wisdom in Asia.
Men and beauty seem to be two contradictory domains because we often rely on an outdated assumption that men only want to appear manly and nothing more. The reality for modern men, however, is significantly different from that perception.
What Do We Know About Digital Attribution?, John B. Ford
What Do We Know About Digital Attribution?, John B. Ford
Marketing Faculty Publications
(First paragraph) Digital attribution sounds rather simple in that it involves isolating advertising tactics and assessing their impact on consumer decision making. But in a complex digital environment, advertisers must navigate through a variety of consumer platforms and touch points to find the optimal vehicles and mechanisms to cost effectively have an impact on consumer choice. And, on each research occasion, the process has to be all but reinvented.

Of Expectations And Experiences: The Moderating Effect Of Valenced Expectations On Enjoyment Of A Positive Vs. Negative Experience, Molly C. Mcgehee
Shared Knowledge Conference
Some extant literature argues that expectations drive enjoyment of experiences, while other literature argues that expectations only comparatively influence enjoyment. The current work addresses this discrepancy and demonstrates that while positive expectations do result in favorable enjoyment of experiences, negative expectations result in the comparative process suggested by others.

The problem to be addressed was the deficiency of financial support, as a result of dwindling effectiveness of fundraising using traditional methods needed to meet the Alzheimer’s Association goal of finding a treatment by 2025. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive case study was to examine the current traditional marketing approaches of fundraising for the Alzheimer’s nonprofits. The significance of the study was finding that the survey participants preferred the traditional approach to the nontraditional approach. An entertainment event was the most favored approach. The implication on organizational change was that age, gender, and past donations to religious organizations were …

What Do We Know About Sports Sponsorships?, John B. Ford

(First paragraph) There is little doubt that a tie-in between a brand and a special event can be quite lucrative. Although past research often has shown that advertising typicality (how well an advertisement is seen to be representative of a particular product category) creates positive advertising effects, there are no known studies that have examined the level of typicality with respect to sporting events in particular.
Motivations To Engage In Word Of Mouth From Non-Market Participants: A Study Using Automotive Business As The Field Of Investigation, Yao Han Kwan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Word of mouth (WOM) can have significant impacts on businesses. Positive WOM can go a long way in helping to grow a brand while negative WOM may cause considerable damages. Managers have constantly attempted to actively manage WOM but often find it difficult to control. Extensive academic research has also been conducted in this field, with a significant amount of literature built up over the last few decades. The advent of the Internet, social media and consequently electronic WOM (eWOM) further intensified practice and research interest in this area.
Despite decades of research and managerial precepts about WOM, the full …

The Case For Showrooming, Cristina Nistor, Prashanth Nyer
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Showrooming has deeply affected the retail market in the past decade. As consumers became able to easily compare prices on their mobile devices, they started using retail stores to try on and experience products and then they ordered online the lower priced versions they liked best to be delivered directly to their homes. As retailers are trying to adapt to the showrooming challenges and the shift to online purchases, stores are increasingly adopting showrooming as a new selling format. We present examples of successful showrooming and develop a framework for when the new selling format can be expected to be …
How Has The Food Industry Manipulated The Way Consumers Perceive Food And Health?, Angelina Garavente
How Has The Food Industry Manipulated The Way Consumers Perceive Food And Health?, Angelina Garavente
Honors College Theses
Food is the most advertised commodity in the United States and food corporations spend on average over $36 billion a year on marketing and advertising (Albritton 172). Seventy percent of total advertising goes to market convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, desserts and alcohol (Albritton 172). As a result of the wide range of marketing on an even wider range of products, consumers have been taught to feel they have a considerable amount of choice. Ironically despite the array of brand-name commodities that give off this impression, only a few giant corporations control much of what is being offered.

Music & Media: A Senior Recital & Honors Project, Kayla Luteran
Honors Projects
Music & Media: A Senior Recital & Honors Project is a cross-media marketing strategy. The main purpose of this project was to develop visually appealing, informative graphic elements and branding to effectively promote a musical performance. This is interdisciplinary in nature and includes written and oral communication.
While many music students post about their senior recital on social media or place flyers, they do not develop a thorough methodology for generating buzz about their event. Although musical preparation is of utmost importance for a performance, I believe that time should be spent on all aspects of planning the recital. With …

For the scope of this thesis, my focus is on independently owned businesses
run by “creative micro-entrepreneurs.” I’m using this term, coined by the digital
selling platform Etsy, to encompass artists, craftspeople, and others who sell artistic
goods and services they have made themselves. In addition to being part of this
community personally, I also think that it is important for these small businesses to
have the resources they need to thrive in our rapidly changing economy. Selling
online, clothing & accessories businesses, and cooking & baking businesses are
among the top 5 “side hustles” for Millennials, making creative small …
