Cfp: Handbook Of Research On Technological Applications And Innovation For Economic Development, Deogratias Harorimana Mr
Dr Deogratias Harorimana
The innovation in the 21st century goes significantly beyond the high-tech picture driven by small or large industry clusters in a specific region-typically Silicon Valley and M4Corridor. The future of innovation will lie within knowledge management and seamless technological applications. These will be supported by planned funding strategies, possibly with clients as drivers of the innovation. This view seems to be supported by the UK government “Technology and Innovation Futures” (2011); the USA government (2011), study into which leading scholars concede that the future innovation and technological applications for economic growth will include products and processes, improvements in areas such …

Open source software (OSS) in academia can have multiple types of implementations and positive returns. This paper explores the use of OSS as a method to teach entrepreneurship concepts and practices to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors. OSS allows for individuals to contribute and provide support services for applications. This will allow students to gain expertise in low level design, software project management, and software consulting services in order to successfully deploy their own spin off company. Covered in this submission will be examples of how the Linux software project development groups, mobile application development, video game design, …

It Outsourcing Adoption By Small And Medium Enterprises: A Diffusion Of Innovation Approach, Abhijit Chaudhury, Pratyush Bharati
Pratyush Bharati
The study investigates factors contributing to the adoption of IT services outsourcing (ITO) by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in western countries. The focus is on the process of diffusion and adoption of ITO as a management innovation. The paper is written from the perspective of ITO vendors from developing countries and seeks to identify steps that will help these vendors sell ITO services to SMEs in first world countries. The model is motivated by two research streams: diffusion of innovation theory and institutional theory. The model posits that vendors should exploit the fit among three factors (as it is …

Impact Of Institutional Pressures On Absorptive Capacity Of A Firm And Web 2.0 Assimilation, Pratyush Bharati, Abhijit Chaudhury
Pratyush Bharati
We investigate a theoretical model that combines two streams of research in IT adoption. The first is the institutional theoryperspective, which provides the institutional pressures that induce a firm to align itself with the members of the institution ofwhich it is a part. The second is the learning perspective on organization, which has been used to study firm characteristicsthat promote technology assimilation; it provides the mediating factor of absorptive capacity. In this study we empiricallystudy the role of institutional factors as they are mediated by absorptive capacity in the assimilation of Web 2.0 technologies.Linear structural equation model using formative constructs …

It Adoption In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises: The Role Of Knowledge Acquisition, Pratyush Bharati
Pratyush Bharati
The knowledge-based view of the firm has motivated a rich stream of research on how social factors impact knowledge acquisition by firms. More recently, information systems research has seen an increasing interest in the effect of social influences on software assimilation. This paper combines these two streams to examine the impact of social influences on software assimilation within the firm, using knowledge acquisition as a mediating variable. A square structural equation model using formative constructs is developed. In this study of small and medium firms, we investigate the assimilation of three different software systems that support manufacturing. Data has been …

Economic models suggest that firms use a simple cost-benefit calculation to evaluate customer requests for new product features, but an extensive organizational literature shows the decision to implement innovation is more nuanced. We address this theoretical tension by studying how firms respond to customer requests for incremental product innovations, and how these responses change when the requested innovation is complex. Using large sample empirical analyses combined with detailed qualitative data drawn from interviews, we find considerable variance in the relationship between customer demands, complexity, and investments in incremental innovations. The qualitative study revealed the importance of organization structures, competitive pressures, …

The Spanish Cod Fishing Industry: Radical Production Changes Without Significant Changes In The Innovation System, Manuel González-López
Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI
This paper studies the changes which have occurred in the Spanish cod fishing industry in the last few years. We also aim to understand the dynamics of industrial change and its relation to institutions, understood here as both formal and informal rules and conventions. Our results suggest that sometimes industries, in order to maintain their competitive position, need something more than incremental changes in their products or in the technologies that they use. As we can see with the Spanish cod fishing industry, major changes are needed which affect the institutional set-up of their production system. Nevertheless, even when major …

Rethinking The Business Model Concept With Eparticipation, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos, Guy Fitzgerald, Tony Elliman
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
Enhancing citizen participation in policy making using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is emerging as a strategic issue for political organisations. ICT-mediated participation, or eParticipation, projects range from the more traditional public sector initiatives, such as petitions and consultations, to attempts at integrating new forms of participatory Web 2.0 media. In this paper, we argue that the potential of ICTs to deliver sustainable eParticipation has not been fully achieved. This is mainly because of the lack of (1) effective coordination at the implementation level, (2) appropriate infrastructure, and (3) effective service design and development. In addressing this gap, we examine …
