Predicting And Composing A Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 Single With Descriptive Analytics And Classification, Matthew Deamon Apr 2022

Predicting And Composing A Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 Single With Descriptive Analytics And Classification, Matthew Deamon

Honors Projects

In late 20th and early 21st century Western popular music, there are cyclical structures, sounds, and themes that come and go with historical trends. Not only do the production techniques utilized reflect technological advancements (the Yamaha DX7, the Roland 808, etc.), the art form reflects contemporary cultural attitudes through lyrics and stylistic choice. Through this lens, pop songs can serve as historical artifacts for their unique ability to captivate listeners based on their generally acceptable and familiar elements, both upon release and with future audiences. It raises the questions: “Can a chronological analysis of artistic choices reveal trends …

Digital Transformation: Implementing 3d Printing Activities Into Core Business Classes, Shota Yasuda, Rohit Gibson, Will Smith, Beau Wilkins, Blair Dilbeck, Jamari Baker

Symposium of Student Scholars

The business college’s new 3D lab, launched in August 2021, has been providing 3D design and 3D printing workshops for core business classes, specifically IS 2200 and IS 3100, to allow students to experiment with additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D printing. In the age of digital transformation, it is more important than ever that business school graduates are exposed to these emerging technologies, learn from experimentation, and develop a foundational understanding of these technologies so that they are better prepared to innovate and lead once they have graduated.

The idea of the 3D printing workshops is that a …

Strategic Use Of Topic-Congruent Managerial Responses In Online Review Systems, Sun Tae Kim Apr 2022

Strategic Use Of Topic-Congruent Managerial Responses In Online Review Systems, Sun Tae Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Strategic use of systems beyond firm control (SBFC) is a critical challenge for firms that are voluntarily or involuntarily represented in these systems. Firms are forced to use SBFCs that are information systems neither designed nor controlled by them to stay competitive in the market. Online review systems are a class of SBFC in which companies can participate while playing by the systems’ rules through managerial responses. Through a mixed-methods investigation that combines an archival study and two experimental studies, we extend the understanding of the benefits that the firms who intervene in these systems can receive. In the first …

Teaching Tip: Socio-Cultural Learning To Increase Student Engagement In Introduction To Mis, Amy J. Connolly, Leigh A. Mutchler, Daniel E. Rush

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction to Management Information Systems (MIS) is a challenging course to teach because of the broad expanse of rapidlychanging material, the centrality of the course to the business curriculum, students’ demand for interactive teaching rather than traditional lecture, and general student disinterest in or lack of familiarity with the subject. Further compounding these problems, faculty may not be adequately comfortable with or trained in active teaching modalities. To address these challenges, we used principles of socio-cultural learning to design a system of class activities to teach the dynamic concepts commonly found in the Introduction to MIS course. Faculty can adapt …

Scholars, government, and the public expect that legal enforcement should be an effective means to prevent a firm's future safety violation behavior in daily productions. However, the literature provides limited insights into whether safety regulation enforcement is effective in helping firms reduce future safety violations. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between occupational health and safety enforcement and a firm's future violation behavior. We carried out a regression analysis based on a panel sample of 2965 listed United States manufacturers with 4474 violation records issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. We find limited effectiveness of enforcement. Our results …

How Apis Create Growth By Inverting The Firm, Seth G. Benzell, Jonathan Hersh, Marshall Van Alstyne Mar 2022

How Apis Create Growth By Inverting The Firm, Seth G. Benzell, Jonathan Hersh, Marshall Van Alstyne

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Traditional asset management strategy has emphasized building barriers to entry or closely guarding unique assets to maintain a firm’s comparative advantage. A new “Inverted Firm” paradigm, however, has emerged. Under this strategy, firms share data seeking to become platforms by opening digital services to third-parties and capturing part of their external surplus. This contrasts with a “pipeline” strategy where the firm itself creates value. This paper quantitatively estimates the effect of adopting an inverted firm strategy through the lens of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), a key enabling technology. Using both public data and that of a private API development firm, …

Experimental Study To Assess The Impact Of Timers On User Susceptibility To Phishing Attacks, Amy E. Antonucci, Yair Levy, Laurie P. Dringus, Martha Snyder

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Social engineering costs organizations billions of dollars. It exploits the weakest link of information systems security, the users. It is well-documented in literature that users continue to click on phishing emails costing them and their employers significant monetary resources and data loss. Training does not appear to mitigate the effects of phishing much; other solutions are warranted. Kahneman introduced the concepts of System-One and System-Two thinking. System-One is a quick, instinctual decision-making process, while System-Two is a process by which humans use a slow, logical, and is easily disrupted. The key aim of our experimental field study was to investigate …

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

In mid-July 2020, the social media site Twitter had over 100 of its most prominent user accounts start to tweet requests to send Bitcoin to specified Bitcoin wallets. The requests promised that the Bitcoin senders would receive their money back doubled, as a gesture of charity amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The attack appears to have been carried out by a small group of hackers, leveraging social engineering to get access to internal Twitter support tools. These tools allowed the hackers to gain full control of the high-profile user accounts and post messages on their behalf. The attack provides many paths …

Managing Information For Innovation Using Knowledge Integration Capability: The Role Of Boundary Spanning Objects, Chandan Acharya, Divesh Ojha, Rahul Gokhale, Pankaj Patel

Publications and Research

Knowledge Integration (KI) or the capability to collate and process distinctive stocks of organizational information is central to innovation. Although an essential capability, KI is also challenging to accomplish in practice due to relational obstacles. The relational obstacles arise because of knowledge boundaries: (a) syntactic boundary where the challenge is to transfer the knowledge; (b) semantic boundary where the challenge is to translate the knowledge; and (c) pragmatic boundary, where the challenge is to transform the knowledge to realize relational rents. In this paper, we propose that these relational obstacles could be resolved through a common lexicon, common meaning, and …

Smart Living With Artificial Intelligence -- Potential Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Mental Well-Being, Weiyu Wang

Masters Theses

"Artificial Intelligence (AI) will result in job replacement and job elimination. Some AI technologies, such as self-driving vehicles, have the potential to disrupt existing industries. Self-driving trucks may replace the 3.5 million truck drivers in the US. Scholars at Oxford University estimated that no less than 47% of American jobs and 54% of those in Europe are at a high risk of being taken over by machines. Routine, repetitive, and predictable jobs are expected to be automated (Siau, 2018). Although new jobs will be created, the unemployment rate may go up in the short term and the emergence of a …

The Operational Impacts Of Chief Supply Chain Officers In Manufacturing Firms, James R. Kroes, Andrew S. Manikas, Thomas F. Gattiker, Matthew J. Castel Jan 2022

The Operational Impacts Of Chief Supply Chain Officers In Manufacturing Firms, James R. Kroes, Andrew S. Manikas, Thomas F. Gattiker, Matthew J. Castel

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many firms have elevated their supply chain management decision-making responsibilities through the creation of ‘Chief Supply Chain Officer’ (CSCO) positions. This is widely attributed to the recognition that superior supply chain operations can generate a competitive advantage. Prior studies have found that firms with CSCOs outperform firms without CSCOs along many financial dimensions. However, these prior efforts did not examine the pathways by which these improvements occur. This study addresses this gap in the literature by investigating whether supply chain characteristics of manufacturing firms differ within firms with CSCOs. To explore this, we investigate the relationship between CSCOs and operational …

Too Fast? Too Slow? A Novel Approach For Identifying Extreme Response Behavior In Online Surveys, Manasvi Kumar, Joseph S. Valacich, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, David Kim

Faculty Publications

Some participants of online surveys engage in extreme answering behavior while generating responses (i.e., they respond too fast or too slow) relative to population norms. Here, we demonstrate how participants’ navigation behaviors can be used to potentially identify such responses. We administered an online survey where students (who were earlier instructed to complete a task) report lenience scores towards non-appropriate behavior while completing the task. We draw on cognitive dissonance theory to posit that failure to follow instruction predicts lenience scores. We then created different datasets by excluding data from participants flagged by our metrics and generated predictive models. We …
