Decreasing healthcare expenditure has been one of the main objectives of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). To achieve this goal, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has been tasked with experimenting with provider reimbursement methods in an attempt to increase quality, while decreasing costs. The purpose of this research was to study the effects of the ACA on physician reimbursement rates from CMS to determine the most cost effective method of delivering healthcare services. By integrating mapping and geospatial data into a county-level datasetfor exploratory analysis, we will demonstrate how to provide useful insightsfor waste managers and local governments regarding spatial patterns ofhousehold hazardous waste (HHW) collection and how it changes over time. We usemap-based visualization to display patterns of spatial intensity and countylocations for HHW collection in California from 2004 to 2015. We use exploratory spatial data analyticsmethods to characterize the spatial distribution of HHW collected per person.When we considered the spatial relationships, we were able to develop andestimate a geographically-weighted regression to explain how different regionalfactors influence the amount of HHW collected. …

Information technology (IT) is a key enabler of modern small businesses, yet fostering reliably effective IT systems remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a light weight IT effectiveness model for small businesses to assess their IT and formulate strategies for improvement. Employing an action research approach we investigate a mixed method analysis of 120 survey responses from small family businesses and user participation in 10 semi-structured interviews. We then conduct critical reflection to identify refinements which are validated using 72 survey responses from university students. Stochastic network design is a general framework for optimizing network connectivity. It has several applications in computational sustainability including spatial conservation planning, pre-disaster network preparation, and river network optimization. A common assumption in previous work has been made that network parameters (e.g., probability of species colonization) are precisely known, which is unrealistic in real- world settings. We therefore address the robust river network design problem where the goal is to optimize river connectivity for fish movement by removing barriers. Supply chain coordination literature indicates that two-part tariff contracts cannot coordinate a supply chain with a supplier and a retailer under information asymmetry, but can coordinate the channel under full information, while leaving the retailer zero profit. Motivated by the practice of Costco Business Centres, we incorporate customer heterogeneity, near-saturated retail market and asymmetric information into a stylised model. The retailer has the knowledge of customer heterogeneity while the supplier does not. The supplier, on the other hand, designs a menu of two-part tariffs for the retailer to choose from. This study offers a method for empirically testing theories operationalized in the form of multivariate statistical models. An innovation of the method is that it distinguishes testing into three separate forms, “effect testing,” “prediction testing,” and “theory testing,” where statistical significance plays a separate role in each one.
