This paper proposes an operational business intelligence system to help achieve operational excellence in insurance call centers. We apply a decision tree based solution to collected data using a sliding window approach. Our solution provides two distinct advantages to call center managers. First, the decision trees allow managers to recognize key factors and the role they play in determining service levels. Second, our sliding window approach allows managers to see the effects on service levels of resource reallocation. Collected data from a large U.S. insurance company is analyzed. Initial results provide good insight into factors affecting this firm’s call center …

Using An Elaboration Likelihood Approach To Better Understand The Persuasiveness Of Website Privacy Assurance Cues For Online Consumers, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Gregory D. Moody, Anthony Vance, Matthew Jensen, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Taylor Michael Wells

Faculty Publications

Privacy concerns can greatly hinder consumers’ intentions to interact with a website. The success of a website therefore depends on its ability to improve consumers’ perceptions of privacy assurance. Seals and assurance statements are mechanisms often used to increase this assurance; however, the findings of the extant literature regarding the effectiveness of these tools are mixed. We propose a model based on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) that explains conditions under which privacy assurance is more or less effective, clarifying the contradictory findings in previous literature. We test our model in a free-simulation online experiment, and the results of the …

Does Information Technology Investment Influences Firm’S Market Value? The Case Of Non-Publicly Traded Healthcare Firms, Rajiv Kohli, Sarv Devaraj, Terence T. Ow

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Managers make informed information technology investment decisions when they are able to quantify how IT contributes to firm performance. While financial accounting measures inform IT’s influence on retrospective firm performance, senior managers expect evidence of how IT influences prospective measures such as the firm’s market value. We examine the efficacy of IT’s influence on firm value combined with measures of financial performance for non-publicly traded (NPT) hospitals that lack conventional market-based measures. We gathered actual sale transactions for NPT hospitals in the United States to derive the q ratio, a measure of market value. Our findings indicate that the influence …

Unpacking The Privacy Paradox: Irrational Decision-Making Within The Privacy Calculus, David W. Wilson, Joseph S. Valacich

Faculty Publications

Understanding privacy is important to individuals and organizations. This research in progress develops a theoretical model that incorporates both actual disclosure behavior and the potential for irrational behavior induced by overriding situational factors presented at the time of the privacy disclosure decision. Actual disclosure behavior is seldom measured in privacy research, and most prior work has assumed the disclosure decision to be a fully rational one. This research challenges that assumption, and the eventual completion of the project will contribute uniquely to our understanding of the privacy calculus in online transactions.

Specifically, this research investigates the relationship between prior-gained knowledge of merging companies, preparation and implementation processes, and actual performance after knowledge transfer. The result reveals that such prior-gained knowledge of merging companies will have a significant positive impact on the motivation for proposed M&A, while it, in contrast, may only have a limited impact on other …

Rethinking Sustained Competitive Advantage From Human Capital, Benjamin Campbell, Russell Coff, David Kryscynski Jan 2012

Rethinking Sustained Competitive Advantage From Human Capital, Benjamin Campbell, Russell Coff, David Kryscynski

Faculty Publications

The strategy literature often emphasizes firm-specific human capital as a source of competitive advantage based on the assumption that it constrains employee mobility. This paper first identifies three boundary conditions that limit the applicability of this logic. It then offers a more comprehensive framework of human capital-based advantage that explores both demand- and supply-side mobility constraints. The critical insight is that these mobility constraints have more explanatory power than the firm-specificity of human capital.

The Business Rules Approach And Its Effect On Software Testing, Thomas O. Meservy, Chen Zhang, Euntae T. Lee, Jasbir Dhaliwal

Faculty Publications

Codification and testing of business rules in application programs has historically been a challenge in software engineering. Many organizations have adopted the business rules approach to formalize and compartmentalize business rules as a separate component from application code. This article investigates and presents the effects of the business rules approach on testing activities in the software development life cycle at a Fortune 500 corporation. The findings suggest that the business rules approach has the potential to engage testing personnel early in the development process and to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of testing activities.
