Virtual World Affordances: Enhancing Brand Value, Sora Park, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, David Dewester, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Sunran Jeon

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds that are a natural extension of the existing Internet. Although many businesses are jumping on the bandwagon to maintain a presence in virtual worlds, there is no well-established knowledge or theory to guide businesses in their involvement in these environments. In this paper, we identify affordances in the virtual worlds that can be used to increase the state of flow experienced in a business virtual site, which in turn may enhance brand equity, or the perceived added value of a brand to customers. We present a conceptual model that can be used to guide …

A Structural Model Of Data Warehousing Success, Hongjiang Xu, Mark I. Hwang

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Data warehousing is an important area of practice and research, yet few studies have assessed its practices in general and critical success factors in particular. Although plenty of guidelines for implementation exist, few have been subjected to empirical testing. Furthermore, no model is available for comparing and evaluating the various claims made in different studies. In order to better understand the critical success factors and their effects on data warehousing success, a research model is developed in this paper. This model is useful for comparing findings across studies and for selecting variables for future research. The model is tested using …

Developing A Multi-Objective Decision Model For Maximizing Is Security Within An Organization, Jeffrey Lee May Jan 2008

Developing A Multi-Objective Decision Model For Maximizing Is Security Within An Organization, Jeffrey Lee May

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous IS researchers have argued that IS Security can be more effectively managed if the emphasis goes beyond the technical means of protecting information resources. In an effort to adopt a broader perspective that accounts for issues that transcend technical means alone, Dhillon and Torkzadeh (2006) present an array of 9 fundamental and 16 means objectives that are essential for maximizing IS security in an organization. These objectives were derived using a value-focused thinking approach and are organized into a conceptual framework. This conceptual framework provides a rigorous theoretical base for considering IS security in a manner that accounts for …

Essays In Outsourced Is Program Management, Neeraj Parolia Jan 2008

Essays In Outsourced Is Program Management, Neeraj Parolia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

IS vendor organizations are increasingly using program management practices to manage complex projects (Gierra 2004). The move to program teams is due to the realization that the management of many client projects and their underlying dependencies requires teamwork among project managers from different projects (Cooke-Davies 2002; Ferratt et al. 2006; Sanghera 2007). With two separate studies, first we extend the team competence framework and utilize organizational learning theory to understand the antecedents and outcomes of teamwork behaviors. Empirical results from the first study indicated that teamwork behaviors within the program team were significantly related to an increase in team competencies …

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems offer health care organizations numerous potential benefits. However, it can be difficult to ascertain whether users are satisfied with such systems, and if not, where concerns exist. Organizations wishing to evaluate a health care system implementation like an EMR system can choose from a variety of approaches that have been developed in the Information Systems (IS) discipline. After evaluating a number of alternatives, the researchers selected the Task Technology Fit (TTF) model and its associated instrument as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the implementation of the first phase of an EMR at a university hospital. …

Power Relationships In Information Systems Security Policy Formulation And Implementation, Michael Stephen Lapke Jan 2008

Power Relationships In Information Systems Security Policy Formulation And Implementation, Michael Stephen Lapke

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that organizational power impacts the development and implementation of Information Systems (IS) Security policy. The motivation for this research stems from the continuing concern of ineffective security in organizations, leading to significant monetary losses. IS researchers have contended that ineffective IS Security policy is a precursor to ineffective IS Security (Loch et al. 1992; Whitman et al. 2001; David 2002; Solms and Solms 2004). Beyond this pragmatic aspect, there is a gap in the literature concerning power relationships and IS Security policy. This research intends to bridge the gap. The dissertation is a two phased study whereby …

Managing The Characteristics Of Software Product Development Programs, Yuzhu Li Jan 2008

Managing The Characteristics Of Software Product Development Programs, Yuzhu Li

Multiple related software development projects are often managed concurrently and systematically to deliver a complex software system. This approach of managing multiple interdependent projects together to achieve a common goal is called program management (Pellegrinelli, 1997). A software development program can generate the benefits that cannot be achieved by managing projects individually. The software product development program has the special characteristics such as complexity, uncertainty and interdependence (1995). A software product development program can play an active role in managing the uncertainty and interdependence in the software development process. This dissertation is designed to examine the external communication effectiveness of …

Agent-Based Modeling And Possible Implications On Management And Engineering Management, Ipek Bozkurt, Jose J. Padilla, Andres A. Sousa-Poza

VMASC Publications

Engineering Management (EM) is a discipline that takes pride in bridging two major fields, namely engineering and management. It is clear from any basic research conducted within this field that both engineering and management tools and paradigms need to be used jointly. A mixture that encompasses quantitative and qualitative research, as well as theoretical and empirical research is found in literature, making Engineering Management, as a discipline, very complex in nature. As this complexity evolves, so should the tools of the craft. It is interesting, however, to see that Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) as a tool or as a topic of …

Probabilistic Sales Forecasting For Small And Medium-Size Business Operations, Randall E. Duran Jan 2008

Probabilistic Sales Forecasting For Small And Medium-Size Business Operations, Randall E. Duran

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the most important aspects of operating a business is the forecasting of sales and allocation of resources to fulfill sales. Sales assessments are usually based on mental models that are not well defined, may be biased, and are difficult to refine and improve over time. Defining sales forecasting models for small- and medium-size business operations is especially difficult when the number of sales events is small but the revenue per sales event is large. This chapter reviews the challenges of sales forecasting in this environment and describes how incomplete and potentially suspect information can be used to produce …

Faculty Publications

Hedonic systems represent a multibillion-dollar industry and play an important role in how people recreate, socialize, and even conduct business. A key goal of hedonic system design is to promote positive affect—a variable known to influence cognitive beliefs, trust, disclosure, adoption, and purchase intentions. Yet, little research has identified or explained how stimuli from design features lead to positive affect in hedonic systems. This article introduces a new theoretical model, the Hedonic Affect Model (HAM), which is a comprehensive and generalizable model explaining the causes of positive and negative affect in a hedonic software context. HAM outlines three stages that …

User-Is Partnership And Is Development Success, Jook-Ting Jt Shim Jan 2008

User-Is Partnership And Is Development Success, Jook-Ting Jt Shim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since 1970, high project failure rate and low user satisfaction has elicited research on users and their role in the process. It is believed that users' physical participation or psychological involvement in the development process can improve user satisfaction and/or system quality. Previous research treats users as a source of requirements and hypothesizes satisfaction to increase when requirements are fulfilled. However, inconsistent conclusions lead to confusion. Recently, a co-production concept has been proposed to understand consumer participation in product development process. In this reconceptualization, users, instead of requirement generator, should be part of the production. In this study, based on …

Antecedents And Outcomes Of The Flow Experience: An Empirical Study In The Context Of Online Gaming, Clyde W. Holsapple, Jiming Wu

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This study uses flow theory and the technology acceptance model (TAM) to provide new insight into the impact of enjoyment, one important dimension of flow, on user satisfaction, user beliefs, and behavioral intention to use. In addition, based on the propositions that knowledge results in an increased ability for activity and that flow is an emotional state of activity, this paper adopts a process view of knowledge to examine the role of knowledge in predicting enjoyment. The foregoing concepts are represented in a nomological network of enjoyment. Associated hypotheses are tested by using questionnaire responses of 253 online game players.
