We demonstrate in this paper that firms should view customers in a database as a renewable resource when valuating them. Indeed, customer names flow in and out of the firm’s databases, and the goal of the firm is to optimize the overall customer acquisition/cultivation/attrition process. The renewable resource approach to the problem of maximizing the profits generated by a flow of customer names is more appropriate than the traditional Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) approach. Asian initial public offerings (IPOs) require investors to pay subscription funds up-front upon submission of applications, and these funds are locked-up for one to three weeks without interest. Hence, the IPO process entails an explicit financing cost (opportunity cost) whether investors borrow funds or use their own funds to apply for IPO shares. The IPO subscription costs are not trivial, especially in a high interest rate environment or when an IPO is highly oversubscribed. These costs should be considered in any comparison of IPO returns across countries.

Many companies have developed strategies that include investing heavily in information technology (IT) in order to enhance their performance. Yet, this investment pays off for some companies but not others. This study proposes that organization teaming plays a significant role in determining the outcomes of IT. Drawing from resource theory and IT literature, the authors develop the concept of IT competency. Using structural equations modeling with data collected from managers in 271 manufacturing firms, they show that organizational learning plays a significant role in mediating the effects of IT competency on firm performance.

This article reports the results of a survey of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) from Fortune 1000 companies on their perceptions of the critical success factors in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation. Through a review of the literature, 11 critical success factors were identified , with underlying subfactors, for successful ERP implementation. The degree of criticality of each of these factors were assessed in a survey administered to the CIOs. A telephone survey of Department of Fisheries' stakeholders was conducted in November 2002 in order to evaluate their perception of the Department's management of commercial and recreational fishing, pearling and aquaculture, and fish and fish habitat protection. The survey also assessed satisfaction with the level of service provided to stakeholders and their involvement in the decision making process.

The sample comprised of 149 interviews - 40 representing the commercial fishing sector, 40 representing the recreational fishing sector, 40 representing fish and fish habitat protection, and 29 representing aquaculture and pearling.

To access the content of digital texts efficiently, it is necessary to provide more sophisticated access than keyword based searching. GeneScene provides biomedical researchers with research findings and background relations automatically extracted from text and experimental data. These provide a more detailed overview of the information available. The extracted relations were evaluated by qualified researchers and are precise. A qualitative ongoing evaluation of the current online interface indicates that this method to search the literature is more useful and efficient than keyword based searching.

A supply hub is a location generally close to a manufacturer’s facility where all or some of its supplies are warehoused with the agreement that the materials will be paid for only when consumed. Supply hub is an innovative strategy employed by especially the electronics industry to achieve cost reduction and improved responsiveness. After first tracing the developments leading to the establishment of supply hubs, the paper then describes the dynamics of the operation of supply hubs. This research examines the relationship between CIO influence behaviors and the successfulness of influence outcomes, utilizing a revised model initially developed by Yukl (1994). Focused interviews were first conducted with CIOs and their peers to gain insights into the phenomenon. The generation of a daily flight schedule (DFS) requires the proper coordination of resources within established time windows. An on-going theme in Information Systems research is the methods by which business rules are gathered and implemented. Additionally, many efforts have been made to develop reusable algorithms for processing business rules to reduce system development, testing, and maintenance time. The objective of this paper is to present a reusable algorithm for condition-action rules that are applied to finite static lists. The proliferation of unsolicited electronic mail or spam is becoming a global concern for many organizations. This paper explores perceptions of unsolicited email, its impact on personal productivity, the question of whether spam is an invasion of privacy, the perceived need to control spam, and the effectiveness of unsolicited email. The results clearly show that while the respondents find spam annoying, they spend very little time in dealing with it. This study presents findings about perceptions and use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) in Taiwan. It was undertaken to help build a framework within which to better understand EDI in a global setting. Findings indicate that there are differences and similarities between perceptions and use of EDI in Taiwan and what we know about EDI use in Western cultures. Possible explanations are offered for these findings. Several research questions arise out of the findings that can guide future research about EDI in a variety of cultures, and sets of propositions for each research question are suggested.
