Information Technology Impacts On Firm Performance: An Extension Of Kohli And Devaraj (2003), Anand Jeyaraj, Rajiv Sabherwal
Information Technology Impacts On Firm Performance: An Extension Of Kohli And Devaraj (2003), Anand Jeyaraj, Rajiv Sabherwal
ISSCM Faculty Publications
Despite the importance of investing in information technology, research on business value of information technology (BVIT) shows contradictory results, raising questions about the reasons for divergence. Kohli and Devaraj (2003) provided valuable insights into this issue based on a meta-analysis of 66 BVIT studies. This paper extends Kohli and Devaraj by examining the influences on BVIT through a meta-analysis of 303 studies published between 1990 and 2013. We found that BVIT increases when the study does not consider IT investment, does not use profitability measure of value, and employs primary data sources, fewer IT-related antecedents, and larger sample size. Considerations …
A Work System Perspective On Adoption Entities, Adoption Processes, And Post-Adoption Compliance And Noncompliance, Steven Alter
A Work System Perspective On Adoption Entities, Adoption Processes, And Post-Adoption Compliance And Noncompliance, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This conceptual contribution responds to the invitation to the DIGIT 2015 Call for Papers “to reflect on and move forward from the dominant stream of research work on technology acceptance.” The dominant stream of research is basically about antecedents and correlates of adoption and continuation of use for hardware/software artifacts. This paper uses work system theory and several of its extensions to identify directions for adoption research that have been realized partially, but not nearly to the extent possible. It focuses on three general issues:
1) what adoption means in the context of work systems,
2) how adoption occurs, and …
Five Seemingly Insurmountable Challenges Related To Attaining Long-Term Value From Theorizing About Information Systems, Steven Alter
Five Seemingly Insurmountable Challenges Related To Attaining Long-Term Value From Theorizing About Information Systems, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
Recent articles such as Avison and Malaurent (2014) and Grover and Lyytinen (2015) question taken-for-granted assumptions about the centrality of theory in research published in leading journals and the near necessity of following repetitive scripts that sometimes are an obstacle to creativity. This paper goes a step further by providing examples and observations that illustrate five seemingly insurmountable challenges related to attaining long-term value from theorizing about information systems.
1) Divergent definitions of basic terms makes it extremely difficult to accumulate IS knowledge.
2) The IS discipline seems to take for granted that knowledge must take the form of theory. …

Determinants Of Vendor Profitability In Two Contractual Regimes: An Empirical Analysis Of Enterprise Resource Planning Projects, Stefan Hoermann, Tobias Hlavka, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar
Information Systems and Analytics
In this paper, we investigate the effects of four determinants of vendor profitability in enterprise resource planning (ERP) outsourcing projects under two contractual regimes: fixed price (FP) contracts and time and material (TM) contracts. We hypothesize that effect sizes are larger under FP contracts than under TM contracts. From a transaction cost economics perspective, we hypothesize that project uncertainty and project size are negatively associated with vendor profitability. From a knowledge-based view of the firm perspective, we hypothesize that industry knowledge and client knowledge are positively associated with vendor profitability. We tested these hypotheses on a comprehensive archival data set …
Online Manufacturer Referral To Heterogeneous Retailers, Hao Wu, Gangshu (George) Cai, Jian Chen, Chwen Sheu
Online Manufacturer Referral To Heterogeneous Retailers, Hao Wu, Gangshu (George) Cai, Jian Chen, Chwen Sheu
Information Systems and Analytics
Since the development of the Internet, thousands of manufacturers have been referring consumers visiting their websites to some or all of their retailers. Through a model with one manufacturer and two heterogeneous retailers, we investigate whether it is an equilibrium for the manufacturer to refer consumers exclusively to a retailer or nonexclusively to both retailers. Our analysis indicates that nonexclusive referral is the manufacturer's equilibrium choice if the referral segment market size is sufficiently large; otherwise, exclusive referral is the equilibrium choice. In exclusive referral, the manufacturer would refer consumers to the more cost-efficient and smaller retailer. In the presence …

Using A Work System Metamodel And Usdl To Build A Bridge Between Business Service Systems And Service Computing, Steven Alter, Alistair Barros
Using A Work System Metamodel And Usdl To Build A Bridge Between Business Service Systems And Service Computing, Steven Alter, Alistair Barros
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This paper explores the support for more comprehensive modeling of service systems than that possible through modeling methods developed through partial perspectives, with uncertainties about their wider suitability and need for integration with other methods in this domain. It responds to a Dual Call for Papers from INFORMS Service Science and IEEE Transactions on Service Computing requesting contributions that address the barely explored challenge of establishing links between business views of service systems and more technical views from service computing. Competing definitions of service reveal that most business views of service emphasize acts or outcomes produced for others, whereas a …
Endogenous Network Effects, Platform Pricing And Market Liquidity, Mei Lin, Ruhai Wu, Wen Zhou
Endogenous Network Effects, Platform Pricing And Market Liquidity, Mei Lin, Ruhai Wu, Wen Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper examines a monopoly platform's two-sided pricing strategies in a setting with seller competition, which gives rise to not only positive cross-side network effects between buyers and sellers, but also a negative same-side network effect among sellers. We show that platform pricing depends crucially on the characteristics associated with market liquidity, which contrasts with the previous studies that point to the two sides' relative demand elasticities and/or network effects. A market is said to be more liquid when it has less friction, resulting in a larger total surplus for the platform economy and hence greater equilibrium entry on both …

Evaluation And Improvement Of Procurement Process With Data Analytics, Melvin H. C. Tan, Wee Leong Lee
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Analytics can be applied in procurement to benefit organizations beyond just prevention and detection of fraud. This study aims to demonstrate how advanced data mining techniques such as text mining and cluster analysis can be used to improve visibility of procurement patterns and provide decision-makers with insight to develop more efficient sourcing strategies, in terms of cost and effort. A case study of an organization’s effort to improve its procurement process is presented in this paper. The findings from this study suggest that opportunities exist for organizations to aggregate common goods and services among the purchases made under and across …

Near Real-Time Retail Payment And Settlement Systems Mechanism Design, Zhiling Guo, Robert John Kauffman, Mei Lin, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Rapid expansion of e-commerce, along with rising domestic and cross-border payments, has fueled the demand among financial institutions for a cost-effective means to expedite clearing and settlement of low-value retail payments. These are called faster payments settlement systems. Traditionally, retail payments have made extensive use of interbank netting systems, in which payments are accumulated for end-of-day settlement. This approach, known as deferred net settlement (DNS), reduces the liquidity needs of the payment system, but bears inherent operational and financial risks for unsettled intraday payments. As large dollar volumes of retail payments accumulate, real-time gross settlement (RTGS) has been recognized as …

Competition, Cooperation And Regulation: Understanding The Evolution Of The Mobile Payments Technology Ecosystem, Jun Liu, Robert J. Kauffman, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The past twenty years have been a time of many new technological developments, changing business practices, and interesting innovations in the financial information system (IS) and technology landscape. They have led to the increasing use of prior innovations that have supported e-commerce, and that are now being brought into financial services to support different kinds of improvements to core business processes. This research examines recent changes in the payment sector in financial services, specifically related to mobile payments (m-payments) that enable new channels for consumer payments for goods and services purchases, and other forms of economic exchange. We extend recent …
Beneficial Noncompliance And Detrimental Compliance: Expected Paths To Unintended Consequences, Steven Alter
Beneficial Noncompliance And Detrimental Compliance: Expected Paths To Unintended Consequences, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This paper explores the possibility that compliance and noncompliance to process specifications, software usage procedures, business rules, and best practices could be beneficial or detrimental. After introducing different types of compliance and noncompliance, it uses a simple 2 x 2 matrix to postulate four types of situations: beneficial compliance, detrimental compliance, beneficial noncompliance, and detrimental noncompliance. It provides examples that illustrate subcategories within all four possibilities, thereby bringing into question the common assumption that compliance is beneficial and noncompliance is detrimental. It presents a model that explains decisions related to intentions toward compliance and noncompliance. It concludes with implications for …

Overcoming Silo Thinking In The Is Discipline By Thinking Differently About Is And It, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This essay challenges fundamental, silo-oriented assumptions about the IS discipline. It shows how work system theory and its extensions form a potential basis for overcoming that silo-orientation and finding and exploiting areas of overlap with other disciplines. Within the IS discipline, this paper shows how WST and extensions provide a basis for thinking differently about fundamental topics including the following: IS as a system-related discipline, system usage, sociotechnical systems, planned and emergent change in systems, system development and systems analysis and design, user participation and IS/IT projects, attaining value from IS and IT, IS success, business/IT alignment, and IS theories …
Production Cost Heterogeneity In A Circular-City Model, Mei Lin, Ruhai Wu
Production Cost Heterogeneity In A Circular-City Model, Mei Lin, Ruhai Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We derive the closed-form solution characterizing the equilibrium in a circular-city model with competing firms of heterogeneous production costs. Tractability issues in this setting are well known and have not been resolved in prior work. In this paper, the equilibrium solution illustrates effects of production costs on firms’ strategic decisions, their aggregate profit, and consumer surplus.

Library headcounts are tedious, time-consuming, and subject to the vagaries of scheduling, attention to detail, and incomplete (especially for consortia). If we conduct them perfectly, on-schedule without fail we can gather at best the number of patrons seated in various areas of the library at two arbitrary times per day. We don't know their home campus. We don't know how patronage varies by time of day. If only there was an automatic way of conducting counts that was automatic, unsleeping, and could differentiate between campuses The wireless infrastructure is (hopefully) always on, and devices are nearly ubiquitous, and typically signed …
Sociotechnical Systems Through A Work System Lens :A Possible Path For Reconciling System Conceptualizations, Business Realities, And Humanist Values In Is Development, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This position paper describes an approach that might increase the likelihood that the sociotechnical perspective will take its proper place in today’s world. This paper questions the clarity of the traditional STS notion of joint optimization of a social system and technical system. It explains how the integrated system view in work system theory (WST) and the work system method (WSM) might provide a more straightforward way to describe, discuss, and negotiate about sociotechnical systems. Using WST/WSM to bypass the effort of separately describing and jointly optimizing social and technical systems might make it easier to engage effectively in discussions …
A Workaround Design System For Anticipating, Designing, And/Or Preventing Workarounds, Steven Alter
A Workaround Design System For Anticipating, Designing, And/Or Preventing Workarounds, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
Idealized system design produces requirements reflecting management intentions and “best practices.” This paper proposes a workaround design system (WDS) for anticipating, designing, and/or preventing workarounds that bypass systems as designed. A WDS includes a process and an interactive “workaround design tool” (WDT) for identifying and evaluating foreseeable workarounds based on work system theory and a theory of workarounds. This paper summarizes the conceptual background and explains the form, use, and implications of the proposed WDS and WDT.
The idea of WDS addresses significant gaps in practice and research. Designers should have methods for identifying likely obstacles and anticipating and evaluating …

Examining How Firms Leverage It To Achieve Firm Productivity: Rbv And Dynamic Capabilities Perspectives, Gary Pan, Shan Ling Pan, Chu Yeong Lim
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Firm productivity is one of the major drivers of firm's growth. Information Technology (IT) has the potential to be a key enabler of firm productivity. IS researchers have suggested strong association between investments in IT and firm productivity. Yet, uncertainty and concern about the actual impact of IT on firm productivity remain. This calls for an urgent need for research on how firms can leverage IT for productivity gains. Through a case study, this research aims to answer the above question by developing a process model that explicates the roles of firm capabilities in driving IT-enabled productivity.
Technology Investment Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, Robert J. Kauffman, Jun Liu, Dan Ma
Technology Investment Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, Robert J. Kauffman, Jun Liu, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Innovations involving information technology (IT) provide potentially valuable investment opportunities for industry and government organizations. Significant uncertainties are associated with decision-making for IT investment though, a problem that senior executives have been concerned about for a long time. The uncertainties include consumer, market and regulatory responses, IT-driven changes in operational and transactional performance, technology standards and competition, and future market conditions. All these things have an impact on organizations’ willingness to adopt. As a result, traditional capital budgeting, investment experience, and intuition have not been very effective in IT investment decision-making. We propose a new option-based stochastic valuation modeling approach …

The implementation of the Electronic Health Record to substantially improve the practice of medicine has not fully reached its projected potential partly due to many barriers to its adoption. There is growing evidence that one of the reasons for the delay in the adoption of EHR has been due to the negative impact of current EHRs on the clinician-patient interaction, clinician workflow and communications. This research studies the usability of the Electronic Health Record for clinicians involved in cardiac care by evaluating various clinician-patient interaction workflows. The aim of the study is to identify inefficiencies by examining the similarities and …

Traditionally, graduate programs (as well as some undergraduate programs) relied on a thesis as means for the student to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts presented to them during the course of the program. In many cases, the thesis was considered an academic deliverable and did not relate directly to the student’s work environment. A more practical approach to validating the student’s ability to demonstrate the new skills and knowledge acquired during the program is the evolution of the capstone project.

Assessing The Emphasis On Information Security In The Systems Analysis And Design Course, William David Salisbury, Thomas W. Ferratt, Donald E. Wynn
MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications
Due to several recent highly publicized information breaches, information security has gained a higher profile. Hence, it is reasonable to expect that information security would receive an equally significant emphasis in the education of future systems professionals. A variety of security standards that various entities (e.g., NIST, COSO, ISACA-COBIT, ISO) have put forth emphasize the importance of information security from the very beginning of the system development lifecycle (SDLC) to avoid significant redesign in later phases. To determine the emphasis on security in typical systems analysis and design (SA&D) courses, we examine (1) to what extent security is emphasized in …
