Within this paper we consider our results of using the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) over a period of 18 months to distribute our working papers to the research community. Our experiences have been quite positive, with SSRN serving as a platform both to inform our colleagues about our research as well as inform us about related research (through email and telephoned conversations of colleagues who discovered our paper on SSRN). We then discuss potential future directions for SSRN to consider, and how SSRN might well represent an initial revolution in 21st century academic knowledge aggregation and dissemination. Our paper …

This paper presents the impact of RFID technology on the picking and shipping processes of one RFID-enabled warehouse in the 3PL industry. The findings from our study confirm initial results from many studies where RFID implementation has been shown to enable business process redesign, improve data quality, real-time data collection and synchronization and enhance system integration. In this study we show that the full potential of RFID technology is dependent upon the involvement of all supply chain members involved in implementation. Towards Self-Organizing, Smart Business Networks: Let’S Create ‘Life’ From Inert Information, David Bray, Benn Konsynski

We review three different theories that can inform how researchers can determine the performance of smart business networks, to include: (1) the Theory of Evolution, (2) the Knowledge-Based Theory of the Firm, and (3) research insights into computers and cognition. We suggest that each of these theories demonstrate that to be generally perceived as smart, an organism needs to be self-organizing, communicative, and tool-making. Consequentially, to determine the performance of a smart business network, we suggest that researchers need to determine the degree to which it is self-organizing, communicative, and tool-making. RFID-, Sensor- und Lokalisierungstechnologien werden die Abläufe im Facility Management künftig stark verändern. Angesichts der hohen Kosten des Vorort-Einsatzes eines Mitarbeiters und der verteilten Standorte von Immobilien bieten diese Technologien Immobilienbetreibern die Chance, ihre Kostenstrukturen durch hoch integrierte Abläufe zu optimieren und sich im Wettbewerb durch Zusatzleistungen zu differenzieren. Die Integration mobiler und ubiquitärer Technologien in bestehende Systemlandschaften erfordert jedoch die Implementierung zusätzlicher Infrastrukturkomponenten und Schnittstellen. RFID technology is defined as a wireless automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) technology and is considered as “the next big thing” in the management and “the next revolution in supply chain”. Recently, the topic has attracted the interest of the industrial community as well as the scientific community. Following this tendency, this paper applies an Information Systems Design Theory (ISDT) for an RFID-based University Laboratory. For practitioners, the paper provides some insights into the set-up and use of RFID laboratory in university settings, and at the same time, it offers a set of hypotheses that can be empirically tested.

The objective of our paper is to identify factors and develop constructs that could be used to develop a conceptual Total Quality Management (TQM) model that is applicable to small and medium scale manufacturers in the United States. The data for this study was collected from a mail survey targeted to managers in the manufacturing plants. Responses were analyzed and factor analysis was used to develop measurement instruments.

This paper examines the case of one supply chain in the electricity sector where RFID technology integrated with firm’s information systems acts as an enabler of process optimization. Using a business process approach and laboratory simulation, we explain how the implementation of RFID technology can increase the visibility of information at various layers of the supply chain, allowing members to gather precise information on real demand and improve replenishment processes. On the other hand, while RFID technology has the potential to automate some processes, human intervention is still required. Much business research involves comparisons in two or more groups on many dimensions. This paper primarily focuses on demonstrating and providing guidance as to how researchers should approach a multivariate analysis in the comparison of sets of corresponding characteristics in two or more independent groups. Finding the right software is often hindered by different criteria as well as by technology changes. We performed an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) analysis using Expert Choice to determine which data mining package was best suitable for us. Deliberating a dozen alternatives and objectives led us to a series of pair-wise comparisons. When further synthesizing the results, Expert Choice helped us provide a clear rationale for the decision. The issue is that data mining technology is changing very rapidly. An R&D project typically consists of several stages. Due to technological risks, the project may have to be terminated before completion, each stage having a specific likelihood of success. In the project planning and scheduling literature, this technological uncertainty has typically been ignored and project plans are developed only for scenarios in which the project succeeds. In this paper we examine how to schedule projects in order to maximize their expected net present value when the project activities have a probability of failure and when an activity's failure leads to overall project termination. Abgestimmte Produktstammdaten bilden die Grundlage elektronischer Geschäftsbeziehungen zwischen Handels- und Industrieunternehmen. Obwohl Handel und Industrie sich schon vergleichsweise lange mit dem elektronischen Austausch von Produktdaten beschäftigen, konnten sich weder der EDI-basierte, bilaterale Stammdatenaustausch noch der multilaterale Ansatz über Datenpools durchsetzen. Seit Mitte 2004 verfolgt das Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) einen neuen Lösungsansatz, mit dem Ziel, einen m:n-fähigen elektronischen Produktstammdatenaustausch zu etablieren. Die Ankündigungen von führenden Handelsunternehmen wie WALMART, AHOLD oder TESCO sowie Konsumgüterherstellern wie NESTLÉ, PROCTER GAMBLE oder KRAFT FOODS schüren ebenso wiedie aktuelle Konsolidierung unter den Stammdatenpools die Erwartungen. Lean manufacturing has been widely adopted by many production companies. Apart from the operational difficulty associated with conversion from a traditional, functional based operation, adoption of Lean manufacturing involves significant organizational transformations.
