Factors Affecting The Growth Of Small Privately-Owned Financial Planning Businesses, Darren A. Pawski, Robert J. Powell, Anna Golab

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Over the past 10 years, there have been many financial scandals in the financial advice industry, which has caused substantial losses for investors. Large wealth institutions controlled by major Australian banks have significantly contributed to investor losses by promoting their products which were not always in the best interests of clients. The aim of this study was to explore the factors affecting the current and future growth of small privately-owned financial planning businesses as a competitive marketplace provides better consumer outcomes. The study undertook a qualitative approach using an exploratory research design which involved the recruitment of 51 privately-owned financial …

Safe Havens In Islamic Financial Markets: Covid-19 Versus Gfc, M. Kabir Hassan, Hadrian Geri Djajadikerta, Tonmoy Choudhury, Muhammad Kamran Nov 2022

Safe Havens In Islamic Financial Markets: Covid-19 Versus Gfc, M. Kabir Hassan, Hadrian Geri Djajadikerta, Tonmoy Choudhury, Muhammad Kamran

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Using a bivariate dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, this study compares the safe-haven properties of various assets against the major Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) stock indexes during two periods of financial turmoil, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Sovereign bonds offered the highest hedging benefits under both crises. The traditional safe assets, gold and silver, which were reasonably productive under the GFC, have been less so during the pandemic. The Japanese yen emerged as a very safe choice for investors holding GCC stock indexes. Both sector indexes and stock indexes failed …

Does Time Equal Money? Temporal Discounting And Self-Control: Insight Into The Rationality Of Personal Financial Decision-Making, Joshua Epstein Nov 2022

Does Time Equal Money? Temporal Discounting And Self-Control: Insight Into The Rationality Of Personal Financial Decision-Making, Joshua Epstein

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Exponential and hyperbolic intertemporal choice models have been widely investigated to measure an individual’s degree of impulsivity in behavioral economics. Hyperbolic discounting research identifies subject’s disproportionately high subjective value to immediate rewards, to the extent that it is not in their best interest. Furthermore, preference reversals have shown subjective value demonstrates an inversely relationship proportional to delay.

Investigation into whether visual representations influence conservative personal finance savings behavior was demonstrated in this study by presenting a multitude of visualizations before allocation of limited monetary resources. Evaluation of the neighbor effect was tested to determine whether comparing individuals to their peers …

The Effect Of Accounting Conservatism On Measures Of Financial Constraints, Taewoo Kim, Brandon Byunghwan Lee, Bo Meng, Daniel Paik Nov 2022

The Effect Of Accounting Conservatism On Measures Of Financial Constraints, Taewoo Kim, Brandon Byunghwan Lee, Bo Meng, Daniel Paik

Accounting Faculty Publications

This study examines the relationship between accounting conservatism and measures of financial status. We find that, in general, a higher level of accounting conservatism is associated with a lower level of financial constraints – thereby making external funds less costly. The results also show that for a firm with a higher bid-ask spread or a higher likelihood of bankruptcy, this negative relationship between conservative financial reporting and financial constraints is intensified. In other words, a higher level of accounting conservatism is likely to make external funds less costly especially for those firms with a higher level of bid-ask spread or …

Essays In Political Insider Trading, Jan Hanousek Jr. Nov 2022

Essays In Political Insider Trading, Jan Hanousek Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I examine senators’ stock transactions, filled both electronically and on paper, between 2012 and 2020 to assess the extent of politicians’ insider trading and its impact on the market. The results suggest that senators use inside political information when investing. I find that both the estimated realized returns and buy-and-hold market abnormal returns are positive and significant. The extent of returns depends on the various personal characteristics of senators. Furthermore, there is evidence that senators attempt to obscure their more profitable trades, further suggesting that they use inside information when trading.

To extend traditional return-based methods, I …

A Hybrid Delayed Differentiation Multiproduct Epq Model With Scrap And End-Products Multi-Shipment Policy, Yuan-Shyi Peter Chiu, Ya-Lei Lo, Tsu-Ming Yeh, Yunsen Wang, Hung-Yi Chen Nov 2022

A Hybrid Delayed Differentiation Multiproduct Epq Model With Scrap And End-Products Multi-Shipment Policy, Yuan-Shyi Peter Chiu, Ya-Lei Lo, Tsu-Ming Yeh, Yunsen Wang, Hung-Yi Chen

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The present work intends to optimize a hybrid delayed differentiation multiproduct economic production quantity-EPQ model with the scrap and end-products multi-shipment policy. Since the requirements of multi-goods have a standard part in common, our fabrication planning adopts a two-phase delayed differentiation strategy to make the standard components first and produce the finished multi-goods in the second phase. Implementing a partial subcontracting option (with the additional expense) for the standard parts helps us to expedite the required uptime in the first phase. A screening process identifies the faulty items that need to be removed to ensure the in-house production quality. A …

The Hidden Costs Of Financing A National Football League Stadium With Municipal Bonds: The Case Of Allegiant Stadium In Las Vegas, Leobardo Diosdado, Marco Lam, Charlie Parrish Nov 2022

The Hidden Costs Of Financing A National Football League Stadium With Municipal Bonds: The Case Of Allegiant Stadium In Las Vegas, Leobardo Diosdado, Marco Lam, Charlie Parrish

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The development of professional sports stadiums in the United States typically relies on public funding in the form of municipal bonds. Prior research has identified several economic and noneconomic reasons local governments choose to direct public funds towards the construction of stadiums. The overall conclusion of this research suggests sport stadiums do not result in significant increases in economic activity and therefore subsidized stadium development projects lack economic justification. In this study, the process of issuing bonds is examined. The authors describe the bond issuance process and utilize data associated with the bonds for the development of Allegiant Stadium in …

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This study tests for house money effect on 2,030 non-professional FX investors trading through an Australian Financial Service provider. The results indicate that, in general, investors display a positive relationship between prior gains and the change in subsequent weekly risk-taking - the house money effect. The results also suggest that astute investors display a stronger house money effect than mediocre investors following prior gains. In comparison, mediocre investors display a stronger disposition effect following prior losses than astute investors. The study further reveals that investors who initially demonstrated the house money effect became more prone to the disposition effect during …

Responsible Hedge Funds, Hao Liang, Lin Sun, Song Wee Melvyn Teo Nov 2022

Responsible Hedge Funds, Hao Liang, Lin Sun, Song Wee Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Hedge funds that endorse the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) underperform other hedge funds after adjusting for risk but attract greater investor flows, accumulate more assets, and harvest greater fee revenues. Consistent with an agency explanation, the underperformance is driven by PRI signatories with low environmental, social, and governance (ESG) exposures and is greater for hedge funds with poor incentive alignment. To address endogeneity, we exploit regulatory reforms that enhance stewardship and show that the ESG exposure and relative performance of signatory funds improve post reforms. Our findings suggest that some hedge funds endorse responsible investment to pander …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose VetSC, a novel UI-driven, program analysis guided model checking technique that can automatically extract contract semantics in DApps so as to enable targeted safety vetting. To facilitate model checking, we extract business model graphs from contract code that capture its intrinsic business and safety logic. To automatically determine what safety specifications to check, we retrieve textual semantics from DApp user interfaces. To exclude untrusted UI text, we also validate the UI-logic consistency and detect any discrepancies. We have implemented VetSC and applied it to 34 real-world DApps. Experiments have demonstrated that VetSC can accurately interpret smart contract code, …

Historical Corn Price Evolution Implications For Pre-Harvest Hedging, Cory Walters, Richard K. Preston Oct 2022

Historical Corn Price Evolution Implications For Pre-Harvest Hedging, Cory Walters, Richard K. Preston

Cornhusker Economics

Commodity markets evolve through information provided by participating buyers and sellers and throughout this process the conditions in which commodity markets work are revealed. Producer pre-harvest commodity marketing can be further developed by incorporating information on how commodity markets work, leading to better farm financial performance.

We investigate how commodity markets have historically evolved from spring to fall. While changes in future prices appear random in any given year, observing average daily prices over 32 years could uncover a seasonal tendency. In the past 32 years, the average daily price tends to be higher in the spring than the fall, …

Deceptive Appeals And Cognitive Influences Used In Fraudulent Scheme Sales Pitches, Rafael J. Toledo Oct 2022

Deceptive Appeals And Cognitive Influences Used In Fraudulent Scheme Sales Pitches, Rafael J. Toledo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fraud schemes exploit the complex interplay that results from utilizing deceptive appeals to activate underlying cognitive influences. This study was designed, first, to identify the deceptive appeals present in the messaging of fraudulent schemes and, second, to identify the underlying cognitive influences being exploited by the deceptive appeals utilized. Findings reveal that effectively used deceptive appeals work to keep viewers’ mental processes in a state of cognitive ease. This state allows cognitive influences--such as heuristics, cognitive biases, and the System 1 mind--to remain in control of mental processing; however, System 1 is prone to accept deceptive beliefs. The results of …

Ceo Types And Firm Efficiency, Lok Chi Lam Oct 2022

Ceo Types And Firm Efficiency, Lok Chi Lam

Mountain Plains Business Conference

This paper investigates the connection between CEO types and firm efficiency. I utilize the general ability index (GAI) as a proxy to examine and separate CEO types: generalist CEOs and specialist CEOs. Initially, I applied the pooled ordinary least square on 26,830 firm-year observations to explore the GAI effect on firm efficiency. The finding shows that GAI has a negative impact on firm efficiency. It indicates that CEOs with lower GAI are better at improving firm efficiency; for instance, specialist CEOs are preferable to generalist CEOs. Further analysis of CEO types using the quadrant method supports this result.

A "Russian Romance Scam" Discussion Case Study, Karl Borden Oct 2022

A "Russian Romance Scam" Discussion Case Study, Karl Borden

Mountain Plains Business Conference

It should not be a surprise that the increasing ubiquity of online dating and the use of social media generally for romantic liaisons has in turn provided fertile ground for a substantive increase in romantic con games and scams. The Internet Crime Complaint Center of the FBI in 2018 reported that online dating and romance scams was one of the top Internet scams reported with over 18,000 complaints reporting losses of over $362 million. (Whitty, 2015; pp444).

In 2020, this author received a fairly standard “broadcast” email that he immediately recognized as the opening play of a “Honey Pot” scam. …

Replenishment-Shipment Decision For A Multiproduct Producer-Client Coordinated Fpr Model With Postponement, Rework And Subcontracting, Yuan-Shyi Peter Chiu, Ting-Fang Yan, Yunsen Wang, Hui-Chi Wang

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This research constructs a mathematical scheme to explore replenishment-shipment decisions for a multiproduct producer-client coordinated finite production rate (FPR) model with the postponement, rework, and subcontracting plan. The considered multiple goods have a common component, and a batch FPR fabrication with postponement is planned to meet the annual multiproduct requirements. The first fabricating phase makes only the standard components needed for a batch and subcontracts a proportion of them (with additional cost) to expedite the process. In contrast, the second fabricating phase produces the finished multiple merchandise in sequence. The in-house rework processes with extra expense help retain the desirable …

On The Market For "Lemons": When Low Quality Does Not Drive High Quality Out Of The Market, Konstantinos Giannakas, Murray E. Fulton

Cornhusker Economics

In a research article published in Nature's Humanities and Social Sciences Communications (available at https://www.nature.com/articles/s4l 599-020-00658-w) we identify the conditions under which the introduction of a low -quality product does not drive its high-quality counterpart out of the market but, instead, ends-up coexisting with it. Using a theoretical framework of heterogeneous consumers and producers in the context of a market for quality- ( or vertically-) differentiated products supplied by producers differing in their production efficiency, we show that the equilibrium quality configuration in a market depends on both the unobservability of product quality by consumers and the relative costs …

Don't Let The Past Sink Your Future, Timothy Meyer Oct 2022

Don't Let The Past Sink Your Future, Timothy Meyer

Cornhusker Economics

Decision scientists have many algorithms for making decisions. These algorithms can be qualitative and subjective, such as following a 7-step process, to highly quantitative procedures like minimax regret, or linear programming. These techniques are very different from each other, but in one way they are very similar; they never, ever suggest the manager become emotional and use past decisions to guide the future.

Past decisions and events should guide decision-making. They help managers assign probabilities as well assessing performance. Viewing these events and situations as permanent paths is where sunk costs become problematic.

Includes discussions of four scenarios.

We test if California VCs significantly outperform VCs from other US states. We additionally test in which instances California VCs outperform the other VC concentrated states of Massachusetts and New York. We find that VCs from California, Massachusetts, and New York have significantly greater probabilities of successfully exiting their investments than VCs from other states. Additionally, we show that California VCs are even more adept than VCs from Massachusetts and New York at 1. Early-stage investments, 2. Helping their entrepreneurial firms receive future rounds of financing, and 3. Helping their backed entrepreneurial firms receive higher IPO valuations and achieve superior …

Commonality In Credit Spread Changes: Dealer Inventory And Intermediary Distress, Zhiguo He, Paymon Khorrami, Zhaogang Song Oct 2022

Commonality In Credit Spread Changes: Dealer Inventory And Intermediary Distress, Zhiguo He, Paymon Khorrami, Zhaogang Song

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Two intermediary-based factors—a corporate bond dealer inventory measure and a broad intermediary distress measure—explain more than 40% of the puzzling common variation in credit spread changes beyond canonical structural factors. A simple intermediary-based model with partial market segmentation accounts for intermediary factors’ explanatory power and delivers three further implications with empirical support. First, whereas bond sorts on risk-related variables produce monotonic loading patterns on intermediary factors, non-risk-related sorts produce no pattern. Second, dealer inventory comoves with corporate-credit assets only, whereas intermediary distress comoves with both corporate-credit and non-corporate-credit assets. Third, dealers’ inventory responds to (instrumented) bond sales by institutional investors.

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The increasing adoption of dual-class shares (DCS)—an ownership structure that gives corporate insiders greater voting power than other shareholders—among newly listed companies has raisedsignificant governance concerns. We investigate the decision to adopt the DCS structure and itsvalue implications in the recent U.S. IPOs. Using founder cultural traits and Silicon Valley lawfirms as instrumental variables, we find significant post-IPO outperformance by firms adopting DCSwith a sunset clause, especially incapacity-based sunset which stipulates that the DCS will ceaseafter founders’ death, incapacitation or departure, compared to non-DCS firms and DCS firms without sunsets. This outperformance is more pronounced for high-tech firms, after Google’s …

Empirical Studies Of Esg Scores With Corporate Credit Spreads (Insights From Popularity-Based Pricing), Eugene Okyere-Yeboah

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

This study examines various factors or characteristics (risk and non-risk) that determine a firm’s credit risk premium, as measured by its credit default swap (CDS) spread, with a particular focus on the impact of environment, social, and governance (ESG) scores. The framework employed is a general equilibrium asset pricing model which integrates classical and behavioral finance elements, known as popularity-based asset pricing. It treats all attributes or characteristics of an asset as ”factors” to which investors assign a degree of popularity, which changes over time. Non-risk characteristics are classified as ”tastes” or ”disagreements”, Fama French (2007). Firms’ degree of adherence …

There has recently been a relaxation of listing regulations to accommodate and attract firms going public with dual-class shares (DCS), notably in Asia. We examine the value implications of DCS adoption by employing an event study around a regulatory change allowing DCS listings in Hong Kong. We find negative market reactions around these regulatory discussions for firms already listed in Hong Kong, especially for firms in technology (tech) sectors. However, the market reaction turned positive for tech firms during Hong Kong’s first DCS listing. We identify two distinct channels that influenced shareholders’ perspectives on DCS: the competition channel, which dominated …
